Buzz: Is New York where Joe Thornton wants to be?

4:16PM: Katie Strang said in a chat today that right now Thornton is only thinking about playing in San Jose. (ESPN)

He has a full-no move clause as part of his contract.

4:04PM: On Hockey Central at Noon today, Doug MacLean said “it seems at this particular time Joe Thornton only wants to go to New York, that was the scuttlebut and maybe it will change as the days go on.”

Nick Kypreos said, “Joe is interesting because he just signed that three-year extension, there is some talk that Wilson told him that he isn’t going anywhere and then maybe he found out he was being shopped and now is the push to move him, obviously it is. If it’s not Joe it has to be Marleau. You will have to get some significant top-six pieces back.”

Kypreos added, “I look at Joe and at this point in his career I put him into that Iginla category where you don’t want him to come into your team right now. The last thing that Joe needs is to step into a lineup next year and be “the guy.” He needs an Iginla situation and St. Louis would be pretty good for him. St. Louis needs to get bigger. They can’t compete with just Backes. Joe can still get 50 assists and still score you almost a point of game and is one of the best passers in the game.”

MacLean said, “In New York he would have to be the guy because you have Stepan who is a good number two, Brassard who is a really good number three and Moore who is a UFA so their center ice needs some reworking with Richards and Moore probably good and Joe would be a good fit because of his history with Rick.”

38% of readers said that their interest in Thornton would be based on cost and 37% said that the Rangers should go after him.

Sather can not revert to his style of GM in the late 90's and early 2000's. Bringing in washed up and past their prime stars with hugh salaries (cap hits) and giving up on top prospects. Look for younger players with size and heart.

please no.  i like thornton but i'd rather them go younger.  definitely not interested in giving up youth for him.  i'd prefer they go after someone like stastny instead.

Not brass or steps or hags. Would do JT miller plus though

Don't see it happening if they have to give too much away. Huge cap hit would cost the Rangers many free agents and youth

Joe Thornton is a PLAYOFF LOSER, just like his buddy RICK NASH. DO NOT REUNITE THESE 2 CHOKE ARTISTS IN NYC. TRADE NASH. NO THORNTON!

Thornton has a killer team destined to win the Cup every year and CONTINUALLY captains his team to an early dismissal. Let him be SJS problem. I would take him for $1M.

@Garts2point2 I mean, if San Jose wants to give him to us for a few prospects and wants to retain 2 million of his salary, I'd take him

The trade would kill the team. Either the pieces given up will cost us or the contract will prevent us resigning our free agents. Bad idea at this time.

make the trade bring him to the Eastern conference champion New York Rangers LGR

@Guyute when did they ever play together?

My problem with Thornton is simply that he's a brilliant passer but not the goal scorer we need.  I want a #1 center who is a top scorer.  Hard to find though.

@Gary Wien Multiple international/olympics together and more importantly they went and played in Davos (Switzerland) together during both NHL lockouts. They are buddies and they both seem to be great at pissing their pants in the playoffs. NO THANKS.
