At Sports Illustrated, Stu Hackel writes about Alexander Semin and the strange situation that he finds himself in this far into free agency.
Semin, a three time 30 goal scorer, is still a UFA due to criticisms from people like Marc Crawford and Pierre McGuire and his former teammate Matt Bradley.
Bradley said of Semin, “he could easily be the best player in the league, and just for whatever reason, just doesn’t care.”
Semin made $6.7 million last season but the Capitals chose not to re-sign him. Last year he scored 21 goals and 33 assists. The 21 goals are the fewest he has scored since 2006.
When asked recently whether you would sign Semin, 31.24% said YES, 42.4% said NO and 26.33% said ONLY AS A LAST RESORT.
Adam Rotter: This is starting to remind me a bit of the Alex Frolov situation from two summers ago where he wanted a long-term deal for big money and then signed with the Rangers for one-year and $3 million. Frolov signed on the 27th of July and Semin may be waiting for some other players to move (Shane Doan and Rick Nash) before he signs a new deal. Someone will give him a chance, probably on a one-year deal, to show he can be one of the top players in the league. If he doesn’t show it, that will be the end for him in the NHL.
