In the Toronto Globe and Mail, David Shoalts writes that some owners aren’t happy about how in the latest proposal the owners made to the players, bonus money would no longer count against the cap.
Players like Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, Taylor Hall and Nail Yakupov all have a base salary of $900,000 but have $2.8 million in potential bonuses that paid or not count against the cap.
The Islanders have used this to get to the salary floor with players such as Nino Niederreiter who had a base salary of $900,000 but a cap hit of $2.79 million because of bonuses.
Nino had 1 goal and 0 assists in 55 games for the Isles last season.
For the Rangers, Chris Kreider has a cap hit of $1.325 million but a base salary of $900,000. Carl Hagelin has a cap hit of $875,000 and a base salary of $687,500.
Ryan McDonagh has a cap hit of $1.3 million and a base salary of $875,000.
