Read: Bill Daly Says That The Two Sides Still Remain Far Apart/Number Of Issues Still To Discuss

NHL-NHLPAIn an interview with Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Sun, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that after meeting with mediators last week it was clarified to him how far apart the owners and the players really are.

He says that there are a number of issues where the two sides are still far apart and very likely more than just the main three that have been talked about so much.

Daly says that the salary cap number is the latest big issue to develop as the players don’t want the cap to go below $67.25 million and the owners are proposing $60 million. Daly says “That’s a very artificially high cap based on 50-50 and where revenues are going to be. It would create a high floor along with a very high escrow withhold because clubs would spend to the artificially high cap and the artificially high floor. That’s a huge issue.”

He adds that the owners felt like with some of the concessions that they made they had “bought” the idea of 5 and 7 year contracts.

Really, good let the Seahawks hire him back.

I don't feel sorry for him.  He took the job knowing the awful fool rex was HC, that the offense was horribad, thta MM was hired as OC, and that bradway and bauer were still lurking.  What did he expect to happen?

He gave rex the players he wanted and he ended up fired.  Rex stabbed him in the back with his people instigating after the idzik's failed press conference and made it seem like rex was a wanted man in the afc east.

He should've fired rex and his staff the second he got an opportunity.  What was woody going to do fire him?  well he fired him any way and the idiot rex got another job.  poor buffalo.

It takes a special kind of awful for a GM to get fired after 2 years.

Idzik was that bad.

I don't feel bad for him at all.  He blew it.  Who cares if he couldn't pick his HC?  He had a good one.  The Jets lost a lot of games last year that they were IN.  They came so close to beating Green Bay, Chicago, New England twice, the Dolphins in their first match up, Minnesota, Tennessee.  Can you really point 7 losses that were decided by 1 score on a coach who managed to come that close with the roster he had?  Idzik did not bring in defensive backs.  Rex is your coach, you have no corners... ADOIIIIIIIII.  That was a HUGE screw up.  He had 12 draft picks, 6 of them remain on the roster.  SCREW UP.  Multiple reports of agents not getting along with Idzik because he refused to budge in negotiations.  Remind you of anybody?  Yeah it reminds me of Revis.  This guy FAILED at running this team and I have no sympathy for him.  He could very well be successful elsewhere, but it'll be because of the lessons he learned in his failures with the Jets.

smith will be a star in this league all you fools will eat your words. however it may not be with the jets. idzik was not given a chance by a losing meddling owner. the jets will never win with johnson as owner

In a draft that was as deep for WR than maybe any draft in NFL history, Idzik drafted 3 WRs, each of which stunk.  He drafted 2 early in the 4th round that were significantly worse than a WR taken later in that round.  That Bryant was taken by the Steelers, a blue chip NFL franchise, and not the Jets just exemplifies how this franchise is NOT a blue chip franchise.

Jets fans deserve a better team.  Idzik failed in his own philosophy...fiscal prudence combined with building through the draft.  Can't build through the draft if you consistently make poor draft choices.

Let's hope the latest brain trust gets it right.

Don't get me wrong the new moves the Jets organization have made in the past few weeks re-energized me as a fan, but I also agree with Schneider, had Johnson given Idzik another year with a different head coach and an opportunity to further re-work the roster, I believe Idzik would have gotten the job done.

I wonder if John Schneider feels sorry for Idzik enough to give him a key role in the Seattle organization once Superbowl is over?

HBO showing Namath again...I guess due to Super Bowl week.

I get what he's saying but Idzik also sucks at drafting and signing solid FA's. So, why give this chump another year to mess up the roster?

TheDuke189
TheDuke189

@bharper42 Wow....really? The fact that he was inept didn't bother you. The two free agents he hired failed to make it to camp. Several of his draft picks didn't make the cut. Yet you want to blame Rex. This isn't about Rex it's about a guy who was a horrible GM and couldn't evaluate professional talent. This is his own fault.

prchrscott
prchrscott

@Jesse DeBear Idzik's finished as a GM; no one with any sense or good intentions who saw his pressers and who spoke to people who dealt with him directly would  willfully put him in a position to represent their organization to deal with or acquire and manage talent. At best he'll be an assistant quietly managing a team's cap while the GM does the picking. The only way back as a GM for him is as an emergency fill-in, and even then they'll be looking quickly for a permanent replacement.

And really, if Schneider feels all that bad for him,why not take him back and/or create a new position for him and quietly groom him for another run down the line? Or just take him back into he organization if he's talking the talk. In other words, it's a crock.

TheDuke189
TheDuke189

@j_spikett I know this may be hard for you to understand so I will go slowly. The NFL has a salary cap, Woody's job is to provide the resources for his GM to get players and stay under the cap. That's all it is up to the GM to evaluate the players and get the ones needed to fill the roster. So Idzik did not do his job by correctly evaluating talent, spending the money that was allotted to him or picking any good player through the draft or FA. So that leaves us with Geno...unless he improves 200% he will not be a star in any league .

I'm still holding out some hope, perhaps foolishly, that Enunwa &/or Evans will be able to contribute next year.

I also wonder if Enunwa would've been able to contribute more, whether on STs or as a blocker, than Hakim, W Powell, Graham, or Owusu did in their various roles last season.

@SackDance99

Like Macc said a couple weeks ago, the Jets have not been a scouting based organization. Hopefully that changes.

TheDuke189
TheDuke189

@BronsonSNY The Jets fan base would not stand for another year of Idzik, and Woody knew it.

WW85
WW85

@BronsonSNY Whether you agree Schneider or not, Idzik knew Rex was his HC. He should have given Rex some tools to succeed such as CBs, real competition at QB, & allowing Rex to play whatever QB he wants.

williamg1
williamg1

@BronsonSNY

Who would have been his QB? Would you allow him to draft one? If you draft one, aren't you essentially giving him another 3 years? You can't fire a guy after one year with a rookie QB, can you?

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

Why does he have to wait until after the SB?

Didn't the Pats re-hire McDaniels after he was canned by the Broncos before the playoffs were over?

Why risk waiting when another team could hire such a 'hot commodity' before the playoffs end???

He's just defending his buddy, & should keep his mouth shut (or hire Idzik as Asst GM or some other position above Executive Bean Counter in the org chart).

bharper42

@a57se @SackDance99 this is true poor scouting and drafting.  but i disagree to some extent with it all being idzik's fault.  Rex wanted pryor, and mcdougle and he got them.  I think idzik cow towed to him and gave him the players he wnated.  Where I believe idzik went wrong was in his belief inthe seattle way.  Seattle has Pete Carrol a great coach, team builder, and evaluator.  We had a bull shitter, a myopic HC, and a horrible OC.  That's where he went wrong.

bharper42
bharper42

@WW85 @BronsonSNY this is non sense.  he gave rex sheldon, milner, pryor, mcdougle and patterson.  The problem was he gave rex everything he wanted.  He should've built with the draft where the draft was strongest.  offense.  but he didn't and now he's gone, and thankfully rex is too.  btw rex did play his qb i.e. vick.  that didn't work out either.  You can't run a defense only team like rex did.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

Idzik's QB was Geno, but yeah the problem with the "he should get his own coach" argument is it requires Idzik to get 2, or preferably 3, more years.

Ultimately, Schneider's comments reinforce the speculation Idzik thought this was a 'throw-away' season & he would be able to get Rex fired while remaining employed.

a57se
a57se

@hitchhiker

I agree, Schneider would have been at idzik's door 5 minutes after the Jets canned him if he was so darn valuable.

He wasn't.

Brendan

@hitchhiker Why should he have to keep his mouth shut? He was asked a question about his friend and he gave an honest answer (one he's already given in the past).

WW85
WW85

@williamg1 Sure, but as GM you have to provide your HC with some chance to win. No QB & no CBs is a recipe for disaster & everyone knew it.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

He should keep his mouth shut because he is hypocritically criticizing another team (since he didn't hire his own head coach).

Furthermore, let him re-hire Idzik with more responsibility than just accounting if he wants to support his friend & show the NFL that the Jets screwed up.

Talk is cheap & his buddy is still unemployed!

WW85
WW85

@a57se Yeah. It does seem that Idzik happily threw away 2014 to build for the future but that is not acceptable. He could have just gotten some average CBs & allowed Rex to start whomever he wanted at QB. Probably would have saved his job & also kept space for the future

Brendan
Brendan

@hitchhiker How is it hypocritical? He's asked his preference. Because he didn't hire his HC means he's not allowed to prefer it done that way?

"Furthermore, let him re-hire Idzik with more responsibility than just accounting if he wants to support his friend & show the NFL that the Jets screwed up."

I wouldn't be surprised if he does this, given that's what he did before the Jets hired him.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@Brendan it's hypocritical because Schneider didn't get to hire how own coach & yet hasn't been fired for gross incompetence.

The facts are Rex & Idzik were fired, & Rex is currently employed & Idzik isn't. It clearly obvious to an unbiased observer the NFL was not impressed by Lord Idzik's tenure as GM.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se How? He was asked a question. He gave an answer.

Brendan
Brendan

@hitchhiker Again, how is that "hypocritical?"

He didn't get to hire his HC, but he seems t think it's the way to go. There's nothing hypocritical about thinking that. He's never been a "it doesn't matter" guy in the past, has he? If he's on the record stating that it doesn't matter before, then he's being a hypocrite. Otherwise, he's just giving his opinion while Jets fans spaz out about it.

@williamg1 It's most certainly not a given. I think it's a possibility.
