Bytor, below: "Blech, what I would give for Alex Smith-type competence."

So I looked it up:

Alex Smith, 2012-2013: 24 starts, 461 for 726 (63.5%), 36/12 td/int, 5050 yards (202.0 ypg), 7.2 ay/a, 63 sacks, 107 rush attempts, 564 rushing yards, 1 td, 11 fumbles, 93.6 rating

Sam Bradford, 2012-2013: 23 starts, 487 for 813 (59.9%), 35/17 td/int, 5389 yards (234.3 ypg), 6.5 ay/a, 50 sacks, 52 rush attempts, 158 rushing yards, 1 td, 10 fumbles, 85.3 rating

Not identical, but not too far apart.  And we wouldn't have to surrender two Day 2 picks to sign him.

@williamg1 Might not have changed anything record wise. And who knows, Vick may have just gotten hurt.

Makes you wonder what role the broken helmet speaker had in the 3 interceptions.  To me, it revealed that Geno doesn't see the field whatsoever. He's just locking onto the first receiver and throwing it where the playbook says to throw it.  When he was just slightly rattled by the lack of instructions, he couldn't see anything down field.

@tsjc68 but that is totally discounting the injury thing

@Paul Samuels @williamg1 But it may have changed something. No reason sticking for Geno for 8 games, when he's been the worst QB in football.

@Paul Samuels @williamg1 Nope, but williamg1 can't have any fun unless he's bashing someone. Maybe he's compensating for something (wink, wink)

@roadyhorns @privatejet

Geno is also throwing off his back foot and the ball is sailing way over the WR's head.  I haven't seen much improvement with this aspect of him when he's under pressure.

@roadyhorns I thought they replaced the helmet. I'm sure Geno would have loved to use that as an excuse if that had any impact on the game. Vick wasn't any better either - he was missing wide open receivers all day; and he's supposed to be the veteran smh

@roadyhorns @privatejet I believe it was fixed for the third INT, and that one to me was the worst throw. At least the first two were on target if the defender wasn't there. That third one went sailing to no one.

@BDarc23 @tsjc68

Number of times I said "Sam Bradford is risk-free and has no downside": zero

@BDarc23 @tsjc68 It also discounts the fact that when Smith was Bradford's age he wasn't the player he is now.

@J. Smooth @williamg1

This press conference Idzik did must have been epically awful.  Glad I missed it (and no, I don't care to go back and watch it.  Whatevs.)

@jeezy29 if you can't dispute williamg1's assertion, an ad hominem attack will surely prove your point!

@tsjc68 @BDarc23 And yet it's hugely relevant here. If...no when he gets injured we're back to Geno/Simms/rookie. I'm not giving up picks for that.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@tsjc68 @BDarc23 Hahaha. That is true but I think you purposely left out the fact he's had major injury problems so that the compare would look better.

jeezy29

@tsjc68 @BDarc23 But Bradford's injury history will undoubtedly cause his price tag to plummet. Which is good for us.

BDarc23

@Bent @BDarc23 @tsjc68 Good point and I m fine taking a chance on Bradford over some other options that seem to be there right now

J. Smooth

@tsjc68 @J. Smooth @williamg1 It was as good as it could have been. He was never going to say anything of value, and somehow people were surprised when he said nothing of value.

@Bytor @tsjc68 @BDarc23

I'm not talking about giving up picks for Bradford either.  Just talking about signing him when he's a FA this winter, to a cheap, low-guarantee, heavy-on-incentives deal.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@BDarc23 @tsjc68

I didn't "purposely" leave anything out.  It's right there in the numbers.  Bradford made 24 starts in that two-year window, not the 32 that he was supposed to (and the window doesn't include 2014, because he has no games there.)

tsjc68
tsjc68

@jeezy29 @tsjc68 @BDarc23

Also part of my thinking.  He'll probably take a short-term "prove it deal" with low guarantees and heavy on incentives, which plays into our strategy and allows us maximum flexibility in case we draft a kid who ends up being a stud and we want to shove Bradford aside.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@BDarc23 @Bent @tsjc68

And before the board spins this into another "tsjc LOOOVES Sam Bradford like David Garrard and predicts multiple pro-bowls", let me be explicit:

I don't like Sam Bradford.  I think he's pretty crappy.

That being said, he might be the best option for us for 2015 to get actual semi-competent play from QB without sacrificing big money, draft assets, or future flexibility

tsjc68
tsjc68

@BDarc23 @Bytor @tsjc68

Yes.  I'm not putting all my eggs in the Sam Bradford basket, that's crazy.  Of course this scenario involves "sign Bradford as a veteran bridge" and "draft your QBOTF" in tandem.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Bytor @tsjc68 @BDarc23

He is under contract for next year, yes.  Virtually nobody expects the Rams to keep him, though, he'll probably be cut now that they have Austin Davis.  They'd likely rather have the extra 12M in cap room than keep Bradford around to be Davis's backup.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se @tsjc68 @BDarc23 @Bent

As much as I dislike Sam Bradford, he's actually outplayed all three of those other guys by quite a wide margin as an NFL pro.

@a57se @tsjc68 @BDarc23 @Bent What a terrible convo to be having already, yet completely relevant.

Hmm next year we could have Jason Campbell, S. Hill, Matt Moore, or Sam Bradford....hmmm who are we going to go with...

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68 @a57se @BDarc23 @Bent

Yes but the others are back-up QB's who actually know how to be a back-up QB.

My goal is to find a starter in the draft.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@williamg1 @tsjc68 @a57se @BDarc23 @Bent But it's important to note that Bradford doesn't have any repeat injuries. They were both different knees, and while he definitely is injury prone he was a well above average starter when healthy last year.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se @tsjc68 @BDarc23 @Bent

My goal is also to find a starter in the draft, and whether we're successful in that or not, we should be pairing that starter in the draft with as good of a veteran starter as possible, not just "a backup".

I'd rather have Sam Bradford as that rookie's handcuff than a guy like Jason Campbell or Matt Moore, who just aren't as good anymore.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68 @a57se @BDarc23 @Bent

Not sure bradford would sign up for that type of role...

Vick took it because no one wanted to giive him a legit shot at starting.

bradford should get that opportunity.

I also don't think bradford will be available.
