Buzz: Will Players Head To Europe This Time Around?

Andy Strickland tweets “I don’t see many NHL players seriously looking at European options unless a lockout extending into mid November or December is expected.”

He adds that in regards to rumors about Joe Thornton going to Europe, that he has a home in Switzerland and met his wife there during the 2004-05 lockout.

Strickland writes that Thornton’s agent/brother says that he has no current plans to head to Europe.

The NHLPA reportedly is trying to set up exhibition games with the KHL if there is a lockout.

Adam Rotter: I think it will be similar to what the NBA experienced during their lockout. European players will likely stay in their home countries to play for a little while and a few big names, like Derron Williams, will go over to play. Most, if not all, will demand an “out-clause” to return to the NHL.

Guys may just look at it as an extended offseason and just keep working out and finding rinks to skate at. Best thing would be if the guys all came to NY, the ones who won’t be playing in Hartford, and rented a rink to scrimmage like they do before training camp starts.

Now that all those rookies have numbers assigned, we currently have only one player without a number (Quigley) and only 6 numbers left unassigned (not counting the retired 5 + Chrebet):

#4, #6, #8, #9, #59, and #73.

That's it.

should have drafted pat o,donnell. he's gonna be good, and i would have moved up in the draft projection contest standings.

ok new topic. who will be our punter this year?

Bruschi has Haden > Revis as the #1 cb in the NFL. i'm stunned that he would go against the

Pats

MORE NUMBER NEWS:

Apparently, Zach Sudfeld switched back to #44 at some point this winter too.  He was #82 last year, but that was just issued to Quincy Enunwa and Zach's official team page is back to #44.

i think the boyd pick was a waste of a draft pick. if they wanted to take a QB they should have taken one with upside that was available a round or two earlier. i also would not have signed vick. it has nothing to do with his criminal history. he paid his dues and should not be condemned for his past transgressions. if that was the case half the players in the NFL should be banned. i just think that simms is better than both boyd and vick and quite possible better than smith. simms was never given a chance. one game is not a chance especially as bad as smith played for 3/4 of the season. i also would have taken dennard. i think dennard has top 10 talent. i like some of the WR's taken except sanders. he is too small and won't be effective or will be injured in this league. i think they could have taken sanders in round 6. also there was only one offensive lineman taken. that was a big mistake in my opinion.

"Andre Johnson doesn't plan to attend OTAs or minicamp and said he's been "wondering if [Houston] is the place for him."

I like reading that. That is all...

So assuming that geno, vick and Boyd are our QBs, all three will be of African-American descent. Has that ever happened before?

Before anyone writes 'why does it matter?' - it doesn't, I just think it's interesting, as not so long ago having an African-American QB or HC was made a big deal of, kinda cool if all three QB spots are taken by African-Americans.

@Brendan  Hmmmmmmm....

(I still think he switches.)

MUCH MORE IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT NOTE FROM THE ROOKIE NUMBER NEWS DUMP:

UDFA OLB/DE Zach Thompson from Wake Forest was given #77.  As in, not an OLB's number, but a defensive lineman's number.

He's only listed at 265, so I was penciling him in as a SAM or a RUSH, but maybe he's going into the rotation with Wilkerson, Richardson, Douzable, Finau, Hyder, and Grady.   This bears watching.

@johnsec125 I think they stay with Quigley "down under" through pre-season. Unless he regresses, they keep him. Having said that, I was expecting a punter in the late 6th or 7 picks (though those plans might have been spoiled by the high risk reward guys they were able to find) so I won't be surprised here if I guessed wrong.

@idothis2  I like Haden, but no, he's not better than Revis.  Yet.

In a few years, when Revis's physical decline progresses, maybe.  But not now.  Revis is still #1, better than Haden, Sherman, Peterson, everyone.

I hope Simms is given some sort of an opportunity.  The media etc. have Boyd as # 3 already.

Simms= good mind, good arm, good kid.

His release is screaming for NE to take him.   Watch.

tsjc68

@j_spikett  Let's dig in.

i think the boyd pick was a waste of a draft pick.

In round 6?  Hard to waste an R6 pick.  You should spend those on useful backups with upside, which Tajh Boyd most definitely is.

if they wanted to take a QB they should have taken one with upside that was available a round or two earlier.

The QBs with upside available a round or two eariler have as much upside as Boyd does... and possibly less, all things considered.  I'll gladly take Boyd in R6 over Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger in R4 or R5.

i also would not have signed vick. it has nothing to do with his criminal history. he paid his dues and should not be condemned for his past transgressions. if that was the case half the players in the NFL should be banned. i just think that simms is better than both boyd and vick and quite possible better than smith.

Simms might be better, sure.  He's probably not, though.  If he is, though, he'll hold off Boyd this August and push Boyd to the practice squad.  Only cost a 6th to find out, no big deal.

simms was never given a chance.

Ah, the old Tebow argument.  False.  He was given a chance, in training camp and in practice, to win the job.  He didn't.

one game is not a chance especially as bad as smith played for 3/4 of the season.

Had he played better, he would have received more chances.  He didn't.  And if you're arguing that, cumulatively, he got fewer chances than Geno Smith, that's fine.  He should have been given fewer chances than Geno Smith; Geno Smith is a better prospect than Matt Simms is.

i also would have taken dennard. i think dennard has top 10 talent.

I liked Dennard too.  You can't take everyone, though.

i like some of the WR's taken except sanders. he is too small and won't be effective or will be injured in this league.

We won't be using him like that, though.  He'll be a subpackage guy, in all likelihood, and he'll have value there.  Look at Artrell Hawkins as a good example.

i think they could have taken sanders in round 6.

You're probably wrong.  Saunders, Archer, and DAT were all drafted highly, despite being small, because speed kills and all NFL teams covet it highly.  Hell, Tavon Austin went #8 overall last year.  Saunders would not have lasted much longer if we passed on him, and definitely not all the way into R6.

also there was only one offensive lineman taken. that was a big mistake in my opinion.

Well, we have numerous OL upside plays still on the roster from last year (not just the draft picks, but also Dalton Freeman and Ben Ijalana) and signed two interesting looking UDFAs as well in Tevon Conrad and Brent Qvale.  "We only drafted one OL" doesn't mean "we only brought in one OL".  Dozier is a beast; between the other 10 reserve offensive linemen, we'll probably find two of them worthy of roster spots.

(Whew, that was fun.)

@MS  What leverage does he have in this scenario?

tsjc68
tsjc68

@NYCPEinGermany  That would be a first for this franchise, at least.

I think it's happened before with another team, don't remember.  The McNair-Young Titans?  McNabb-Vick Eagles?  I think both those clubs still had a white guy at QB#3.

@tsjc68  He has the frame to add some weight. 15-20 pounds should put him in a spot to eat up some blocks as a 5-tech.

Knowing nothing about him, is he a guy who would be more like Dooz (attacking pass rusher type) or more like Kenyon Coleman (hold your ground run stopper)?

Simms didn't get much of a shot. He played only with the 2nd and 3rd stringers in pre-season. Smith got all the snaps with the starters in practice during the season. Simms got to play for a half after they were already blown out courtesy of Smith's turnovers. To me Smith got way too much of a chance. He was the 2nd round pick so Idzik had a lot invested in him. I wish Simms got some playing time and snaps with the starters last year so we could see what he's really got. My fear is that with Vick and Boyd, Simms won't get an opportunity and he'll get cut and land somewhere else and become an NFL starter.

@jetlife @MS  None really. He is their best offensive player and they do have no QB. They could trade an unhappy WR for a QB.

@tsjc68 @NYCPEinGermany  Doesn't matter but does make for an intreresting trivia question.  The answer is that it has happened before (2006 Leftwich, Garrard, Gray at JAX).  In 2010, when Ben Roethlisberger was suspended, the Steelers did have three black QBs on their roster (Batch, Leftwich again, Dixon) but obviously that was temporary.

@Brendan @tsjc68  Still scouting him, but I'd say more Douzable "active, slashing" 34DE than Coleman handfighter.

I put him at SAM both from a measurables standpoint and from an edge-setting standpoint, as that's the strength I see.  If he does bulk up, he might be able to mimic a Douzable passrush, I could see it. Doesn't quite have Leger's first step, but he plays with leverage.

Here's an Andre Williams vs. The Demon Deacons defense clip.  Thompson is #98, usually on the left end matched up with the right tackle.

I refuse to discuss climate change on a football blog.

Not that I don't have strong opinions about it (I'm actually kind of jealous of people who doubt that climate change is a reality and a threat, because it must be so nice to still live in that kind of ignorant bliss), but I refuse to discuss it here

@Bent @tsjc68 @NYCPEinGermany  Good catch, forgot about those Jags.

Seattle last year also had just two QBs, both of them black, in Wilson and Tarvaris Jackson.

WAIT: The 1990 Detroit Lions?  Rodney Peete and Andre Ware?

EDIT: Nope, Lions carried a white QB#3 in 1990, Bob Gagliano.
