@a57se @SackDance99 @nesboogie 3rd round is the highest that I'd want an OL.  The OL isn't that bad and there's good young talent already on the roster.  The QB play has to improve and the OL will look even better.

@SackDance99 @a57se @nesboogie

So you aren't concerned that 3/5ths of the O'line is 30 or older this season or that the other 2/5ths is gonna be a crapshoot of journeyman and young guys?

SackDance99

@a57se @SackDance99 @nesboogie Well, let's break that down.  Freeman is the Maytag repairman as Mangold's back up and he's actually a promising talent in his own right.  No issue at center for the foreseeable future.

The starting LT is Brick.  His back up is Ben Ijalana, but the Jets brought in vets like Corey Hilliard and James Brewer.  Brick better stay healthy.  Brick has often been compared to Lomas Brown, who was an effective LT until he was 38.  Brick will be 32 this year.  No doubt that the Jets need to start grooming a replacement, but not necessarily something that has to be done this year.

RT is Breno.  The Jets are his second team.  The Jets have Ijalana, Wesley Johnson, Brewer, Hilliard, Dozier, Hooey and can bring in others for back ups.  Breno is just turning 30 and there's certainly no urgency in upgrading him.

The guards are a young guy, Aboushi, who was promising and, at the very least, played much better than Winters, another young guy.  A veteran, Colon, who is also on his second team.  Carpenter, whose play was uneven with Seattle and is young, and Dozier.  Brewer is also in the mix.  Only 2 need to start, with Aboushi, Carpenter and Colon the favorites, but Dozier is a 4th rounder and could be ready in his 2nd year to step up.

Now, you used the term "journeymen" which I always think as someone who is on his third team or more.  Nobody realistically competing for a starting job is what I would call a "journeyman" and I think the only OL on the roster who is on his 3rd team is Hilliard.

Whoever the Jets would draft would just be another young guy and the Jets have 6 guys with 2 seasons or less experience.  I'm not averse to drafting an OL (past the 4th round), it's just whoever is drafted has to line up behind veterans and young guys that the Jets were already grooming.

@SackDance99 @a57se @nesboogie

That's why IF we go O'line at all this year I would take Collins or Scherff because they are good enough to walk in the door and be the best G on the team and have the future at LT.

I do not think Colon is really what we want another year of at RG but if aboushi and the young guys just don't have it, then that is what we'll get.

Carpenter is eerily simialr to COlon except he has never been as good as Colon once was.

Quantity doesn't mean quality and that is what we are lacking to me...

There is a reason the team was pursuing the top Guards in free agency...

@SackDance99 @a57se @nesboogie

Also, We have been very fortunate in the injury department with the O'line and while I wouldn't even try to predict something like that, we need more QUALITY for depth then we've had.

I'm not sold on Freeman though he did hold his own for a handful of snaps last season.

We don't really have a quality back-up T or G right now depending on who ends up starting.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@a57se @SackDance99 @nesboogie I'm not sure Collins can play OG effectively and everyone says Scherff is a sure-fire Pro Bowler, but so were Cooper and Warmack.

I thought Aboushi played very well at LG and, like Marcus Williams, has just been forgotten along with a tough season.  Last year, everyone loved the Dozier pick.  He's 6-4, 312 lbs and is very athletic.  He was supposed to be a developmental project, so why give up on him now?  IMO, Aboushi, Carpenter and Dozier should battle it out and, if Aboushi and Dozier win out, you have 2 23 year old starting guards...and Carpenter is only 26.

And while quantity doesn't mean quality, quality is a value judgment.  Whose to say that Aboushi and Dozier don't end up being Pro Bowlers?  The Jets have a habit of giving up on OLs that end up having good careers.

As for health, the Jets have back ups and will draft/sign more.  Problem with back ups is that you don't know how good they are until they start.

@SackDance99 @a57se @nesboogie

Nobody is giving up on Dozier, just like noone is giving up on Milliner or McDougle...that doesn't mean you don't bring in more quality players.

we tried to sign the top Guards in free Agency and when that didn't happen with took Carpenter as a consolation.

If we wanted Iupati or Franklin or Boling why would we settle for Carpenter if there is a draft prospect worthy of consideration???

The players will compete for their spot on the team....the way it should be instead of forcing the coaches to play guys (Like foorcing Winters into the line-up in 2013)...

@a57se @SackDance99 @nesboogie the problem with Brick is not his play, its his contract. He counts $14M against our cap next year. We aren't paying that, so we will either cut him or ask him to restructure. We have no real leverage in this request with no obvious replacement on the roster, and I dont want to go into the 2016 draft thinking we have to draft a LT who can play right away.

So if we think Collins is a franchise LT, then I think he has to be up there from a Best Grade Available perspective. If not him, then I think we need to find someone we think can credibly start in a year and thats likely to be a higher round pick (although Buffalo struck gold in Round 7 last year, most the of LTs around the league have been high picks)

That is actually a fair trade based on the Draft trade Value Chart and the notion that next years' first is = to this years 2nd...

@a57se @J. Smooth

Could we swap the 4th for a 6th and 7th rd pick.  Then we could pick JW in the 1st and Lockett in the 4th. and we could still get Matt Jones in the 7th with our 2nd 7th rd pick.

@a57se @Marcus Armstrong The draft trade value chart developed by Jimmy Johnson is ridiculous and completely overvalues the top picks in the draft, especially the no. 1 pick.

I'm not averse to trading up, but at 6, all the Jets should really have to give up is a 2nd round pick together with the 6th pick.  Tampa Bay would never take that and the Jets shouldn't overpay for Winston, who I like but I'm not certain is a sure-fire choice over Mariota.
