Recently, John Tortorella told the media that he is happy with where the Rangers are in their process, but that in certain cases, they have overachieved:
“In a lot of areas we have overachieved and found answers to questions for questions that we weren’t even sure were going to be asked. I am really happy with the progress of the team and the road we are going down.”
I feel the same way. I think that the way certain young players responded to increased roles is more important than where they sit in the standings. Derek Stepan stepped up when Brad Richards was slumping and connected with Marian Gaborik. Ryan McDonagh and Michael Del Zotto stepped up in the absence of Marc Staal and Carl Hagelin proved that he is more than just a pair of legs. The Rangers continue to build their core and fill up roster spots with players for years to come.
