Read: Being The Number One Seed Is No Guarantee

In the Wall Street Journal, Mike Sielski writes about the number one seeded Rangers but also that no team seeded number one in the Eastern Conference has made it to the Stanley Cup finals since John Tortorella took Tampa Bay there in 2003-04.

Sielski then looks at the Rangers possible first round opponents, Washington, Ottawa and Florida.

If Washington beats the Rangers tomorrow and Florida loses to Carolina, Washington wins the division and would finish in third place.

Florida would move down to the eighth spot and play the Rangers in the first round.

If the Capitals beat the Rangers tomorrow, Florida picks up at least one point and Ottawa doesn’t pick up any points, the Rangers will face the Senators.

Sports Club Stats says that Ottawa only has a 9% chance of finishing in eighth place.
