Adam Rotter: To me, Shane Doan is a luxury and not a necessity in the way that Rick Nash, or improving the scoring, was. Doan would make the Rangers a very deep team and basically add a second Ryan Callahan to the lineup. The only issues with Doan would be contract related both in terms of cap hit and length.
In terms of a Plan B, the Rangers still need to add another player or two to increase their depth in general and have a healthy scratch. Jason Arnott is still a free agent, so is Jesse Winchester, who the Rangers reportedly had interest in, Jochen Hecht and former Ranger Radek Dvorak. All are bottom six players who, besides Arnott, are very good penalty killers. Doan is the last guy in his tier and everyone else, if the Rangers don’t sign him, are below and would fit a different role.
