Buzz: The Rangers reportedly had interest in Mike Ribeiro

The Rangers had interest in Mike Ribeiro on a short-term deal, as did the Edmonton Oilers. (Ryan Rishaug)

Ribeiro signed a one-year deal worth $1.05 million with Nashville earlier today.

Rishaug notes, “no state tax in Nashville helps.”

Ribeiro’s struggles last season, which caused his buyout in Phoenix, were reportedly due to issues with his marriage and being away from his kids. (Tennessean and Yahoo)

this whole state tax thing is getting out of hand. The idea behind a hard cap is to level out the playing field between all 30 teams. But teams that are in a state with state income tax are at a disadvantage. How many times this summer have we heard a player took less because its worth more in the state of the team they signed with or the players asked for more from the Rangers because of taxes?

I'm all more making it a level playing field but Bettman and the PA needs to find a way to allow teams in higher taxes states to make up the difference if it is effecting where teams sign throughout the league. And this isn't just the Rangers problem it has happened to other teams. Let's level out the playing field somehow.

Surprised at that price we didn't have cap room for that center depth even if needing 1.3 or so to make up for the state tax issue

Hoping miller or Lindberg work out at center this year. Guess they really want to give one of them every opportunity to earn a spot

Teams in low taxed states are getting players at a smaller cap hit then teams can get that same player for in a state with higher taxes. Something needs to be done to level the playing field.

I am surprised no reporter has ever brought this up on any NHL talk show or anything

Great point twiggy. Weird I hadn't even thought of the issue until this year

I guess Bettman will ignore the issue cause the teams that have that advantage need the help recruiting maybe. Who knows.

I can see it being a topic at the next GM meetings

Whatever the solution. The PA and the league are going to fight over it.
