Reader John emailed yesterday to say that former Ranger player and GM Phil Esposito was on XM radio and talked about how he had agreed on players to send to Edmonton for Wayne Gretzky in 1988.
The players were Tomas Sandstrom, Kelly Kisio and John Vanbiesbrouck. According to Esposito, the money going back to Edmonton could not be agreed upon.
Gretzky was instead sent to Los Angeles for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three future first-round draft picks and $15 million.
I posted last year about Esposito being approached by Sather about Gretzky.
…Everything would be different if that trade had happened. Who knows if the league every would have had the westward and southern expansion it did because of Gretzky. Who knows if Mark Messier every becomes a Ranger and who knows if 1994 or any other cup year would have happened.
The what if game is fun.
