According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, sources have told him that Ilya Kovalchuk wanted to join the New York Rangers.
Darren Dreger tweeted and inferred once of interest in the Rangers from Kovalchuk.
…I don’t doubt for one second that he wanted to be a Ranger, but it was never really meant to be and his second option must have been LA. With the money they have tied up already and younger players due new contracts after this and next season, offering $10 million to one player would hinder their ability to keep those players.
Staple also writes that the Rangers could have interest in acquiring center Brad Richards from Dallas, who has one year and $7.8 million left on his contract.
…He is probably the perfect center for Marian Gaborik but his cost in terms of younger players and his salary cap hit may be a bit much for them. It is the right move, though, to go for a player of his caliber, and then try to re-sign him. He is only 30 and was a player that John Tortorella rode when Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup.
