Buzz: Did The Columbus Blue Jackets Inquire About @MichaelDelZotto ?

In the Edmonton Journal, Jim Matheson writes that the Columbus Blue Jackets, “who badly need offensive blue-liners,” inquired about the Rangers Michael Del Zotto.

Matheson writes that the Blue Jackets may have offered up former Ranger Fedor Tyutin in the deal.

Del Zotto has two goals and seven assists this season with an even rating. Last season he had 9 goals and 28 assists with a minus twenty rating.

He was a minus three yesterday, his first minus game in almost a month.

Matheson goes on to write that Tyutin probably wouldn’t be enough for Del Zotto, but wonders about adding prospect Nikita Filatov to the deal.

…Even with the offensive outputs of Marc Staal and Dan Girardi this season, Michael Del Zotto is still the Rangers best offensive defenseman and losing him, as a 20-year-old, could be a BIG TIME mistake. John Tortorella often talks about him as one of the “core” guys and it is incredibly unlikely that they would trade him, even in a deal for Brad Richards.

But, in that kind of deal, for Fedor Tyutin and Filatov? That is tough. Filatov has ELITE like talent but has that same enigma problem that the Rangers always find themselves with. He is only 20 years old though. There was buzz on Tyutin a couple of weeks ago but I still find it hard to think that the team would trade Del Zotto who still projects out to be a top offensive defenseman but is going through a bad slump now. He hasn’t scored since November 20th and only has three assists in that time. I thought the Rangers would look back on moving Del Zotto with big regret at this early point in his career.
