At Howlings, Bruce Berlet spoke with Ryan Bourque about why he chose to play junior hockey in the QMJHL over the NCAA.
Bourque said that the similarity to the pro game is what sold him on playing junior hockey.
“To be able to play that amount of games and just even the junior style of hockey is more similar to the pro game in comparison to the college game, so for me personally it was the best decision that I could make. Even the playoffs, with the best-of-seven series, is done like the NHL and AHL, so you’re preparing yourself to play at the ultimate level and your ultimate goal.”
2011 first round pick JT Miller will play in the OHL over the NCAA.
I was shocked at how angry people were with Miller about choosing the OHL over the NCAA. The Rangers support whatever decision a player makes, see Chris Kreider, but do prefer the CHL route over the NCAA route for a lot of the reasons that Bourque said. If a player values education highly, and has the choice, they will probably pick the NCAA, but if all things are equal, the CHL is usually better for development.
