Buzz: The latest on Ryan Callahan (Updates)

Ryan Callahan1:46PM: “Callahan and Rangers were really close at the end, just $200,000 apart a year or so… lack of NTC in deal apparently big issue though…” (LeBrun)

1:08PM: “End of the day, Rangers stood firm at $6 mil x 6 yrs.  Callahan dropped to $6.25, but, NYR essentially ended negotiations on Tues.” (Darren Dreger)

1:03PM: Callahan asked for EIGHT-YEARS and $7.5 million late in the summer, “should be marked as the starting point for his New York departure.” (Darren Dreger)

11:32AM: The Rangers and Callahan were within “spitting distance” as of this morning but the Rangers changed their direction. (Katie Strang)

11:09AM: Callahan is still on the ice at Rangers practice. (TSN)

11:07AM: Nothing imminent on the Callahan contract front. (Mark Spector)

“Callahan’s camp moved again on $$ yesterday and 2 sides are awfully close, yet still no deal. Starting to feel headed in diff direction” (Katie Strang)

9:28AM: Things with Ryan Callahan could go either way at this point. (Larry Brooks)

8:38AM: The Rangers and Callahan have grown closer but it’s decision time for the Rangers: trade him or sign him. (Pierre LeBrun)

8:11AM: Things are quiet right now on Callahan and the Rangers. (John Shannon)

7AM: “lots of options for Glen Sather and the Rangers are considering which is not surprising. What might be surprising is that Callahan has softened to a point that the likely hood and possibility that he signs with the Rangers and remains the captain. There are a lot of balls in the air, possibility of him signing is real just as it is of him trading.”  (Darren Dreger on NHL Live)

“Hockey is not a big sign and trade sport but is it out of the question for the Rangers to sign him and then trade him. It would depend on what the terms of the no-trade clause are but it happens in other sports. (Bob McKenzie on NHL Live)

9:21PM: The Rangers, as of Tuesday night, were not any closer to striking a deal with Callahan than they were Tuesday morning. (NY Post)

Callahan is staying at six-years and $39 million while the Rangers are adamant about staying at six years and $36 million. Both sides feel that they have conceded enough already. (NY Post)

The Blues offered up Chris Stewart in a straight up swap, before he was sent to Buffalo, but the Rangers passed. Columbus has interest in Callahan but is not willing to pay what the Rangers are looking for. The lack of interest in Callahan is surprising as Sather has taken a “passive” approach to the market.   (NY Post)

The Sharks, Stars and Canucks have been watching the Rangers lately but the Canucks are not believed to be a likely destination. (NY Post)

8:33PM: “the price is still too high in the moment but this is a negotiation that seems to be changing by the hour. There is going to be on-going dialogue between the Rangers and Stephen Bartlett who represents Ryan Callahan but the Rangers are still open to pretty much every single option. Could they negotiate an extension and keep him as captain of the Rangers, yes they can do that. Could they find a suitable trade partner and trade him by the trade deadline, yes they could do that. As I said, there is nothing imminent on that front and they will pursue every option available. (Darren Dreger)

Why has this team not looked into Vanek or Moulson especially with the Vanek price dropping. Add size/Skill/and Grit.

For the Rangers to get equal value for Callahan, should they decide to trade him. The interested team needs assurance that they can retain Callahan after the season by signing him to a contract. Now in Baseball, teams allow other teams a window to neg. with that player to see if that's a possibility. Now I don't know if hockey follows those same guidelines, but if they do; that's the only way Sather can get a quality and equal return.

Hey Cally have a read:

From the Denver Post:

"Everybody knows how the business works," Stastny said. "You can obviously go somewhere and get more money somewhere else. But if you have something good and you want to stick with it, that hometown discount is obviously something that everyone's aware of and is important to do. You want both sides to be happy. You don't want to [mistreat] the team and you want the team to be put in a good situation where they can kind of compete down the road as well."

Maybe Callahan and a 3rd round pick for Gaborik again? It would be funny if it happened but it would instantly improve the Rangers for this season. He'd go on the second line with Richards again and my guess is he would perform really well with Vigneault.

Artie just scored his 18th goal. He is on fire. Cally for Artie? I can dream

@SNYtv Cally overstating his value, not getting more than 6/6 as free agent. if he wants 39mill, how about 7thyr option, 3mil, 1mil buyout

Cally will give in just to save face now and then we'll be stuck with him and this dangerously over-bloated contract for 6 damn six years with a NTC to boot.

Brooks is incorrect, the price was 6.3 from Cally, so its a 300k gap, and both sides have been making proposals, I don't know who to believe at this point. It just seems too close for a deal not to happen.

@AdamRotter they have come too far to let this die over 0.5 mm/yr on deal - don't sign equiv of Aaron Johnson. Concern is over no move?

Sign Cally or trade him but can we get this resolved tonight and move on to trades to improve the team this year.

Dustin Penner was traded to the Caps for 4th round pick. How were the rangers not in on that, 6'4, 242lbs. If nothing else, this past weekend should is, We could use some of that size in our lineup, especially considering its a 4th rd pick with $2m cap hit.

2:59 comes tomorrow.. Mckenzie.. Rangers may or may not trade Callahan as both sides are continually exchanging proposals.. something may or may not happen!

What kills me about these Negotiations is that in the end it never works out well for that season! They're ALWAYS a distraction to the Player and Team.

Mets fan? We usually don't advertise that. Been a fan before Bud Harrelson joined. Hate Pete Rose. Met Wayne Garrett- he was dating a girl done the street

Go Mets

Back to Rangers: we need to make some big trades if we want to be in it this year

Gaborik still looks lost upon his recent return. I agree he'd do well under AV, if he stays healthy

@Gentry_Max @SNYtv  only a dumbass would pay cally more than 5.5 mil. SO expect Cally to be a Ranger for the next six years.

@Gentry_Max @SNYtv I think 6 and 6 will make everyone unhappily happy.

@ToadMcGee I think our biggest concern is Nash now, who is making nearly 8 million and has only 29 points this season.

AdamRotter
AdamRotter

@LouMonte concern is probably bridging money gap, salary structure, no-trade/no-move

@Luis Barros penner is done he dosent even score anymore right now he is a crappy version of prust

Call me crazy. Call me a lush. But I'd be hard pressed to decide who to buyout between Richards and Nash.

Nash is a one man show with no two way game. He does not excel when facing grinders. Richards has lost two steps and lacks D too. He is more of a team player than Nash

I really question the efficacy of big money, long term deals

Luis Barros
Luis Barros

Robo he has 13 goals and 19 assists, he has more points than Nash, Callahan, Hags, Pouls. Doesn't matter now but someone with some scoring ability, size and good playoff experience.

Luis Barros
Luis Barros

11 points in 20 playoff games a couple years ago. 13 goals 19 assists this year, but more importantly his size and puck possession skills is what the rangers need. Didn't cost much, 4th rounder and no cap hit. Guy has two Stanley Cups

Bo Beck

Nash has trade value, Richards doesn't so, simple answer to your question. You buyout Richards.

Jason Pontillo
Jason Pontillo

Can only buy out one of the two, already used the first of two compliance buyouts on Wade Redden.
