In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that Ryan McDonagh spoke with his former Wisconsin teammate Justin Schultz recently about what his future holds.
Schultz can be a UFA on July 1 after being a second round pick of the Ducks in 2008.
McDonagh told Brooks that Schultz wouldn’t tip his hand into what his future plans are.

Michael: Who is this Justin Schultz guy that you are writing about? If he is so good, why will he be a free agent?
Adam: Schultz was a 2008 second round pick of Anaheim, a few picks before Derek Stepan, and can be a free agent this July 1 due to a clause in the CBA. Anaheim wanted to sign him and put him on defense immediately, but Schultz is weighing his options
In 2011, Schultz was ranked 59th by The Hockey News in their Future Watch issue and say that he made tremendous strides from his freshman to sophomore season. On his style of play, they wrote in 2011, “Schultz loves to handle the puck and is especially dangerous on the power play. Schultz knows when to move the puck and when to join the rush.”
This year, Schultz was ranked 21st in the Future Watch issue and they say that besides his offense, Schultz has gotten stronger and worked to strengthen the defensive part of his game.
Schultz is a Hobey Baker nominee for the second straight season.
It was reported yesterday that the Rangers may have the inside track of Schultz due to the Rangers having two of his former Wisconsin teammates Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh. They all played together during the 2009-10 season and Schultz and Derek Stepan played on the power play together.
The Rangers were first linked to Schultz in mid-March.
According to Jim Matheson in the Edmonton Journal, most GM’s think that the Rangers have the inside track to sign possible UFA Justin Shultz if he doesn’t sign with Anaheim before July 1.
The belief is that Schultz may want to play with former teammates Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan.
Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post that if former Anaheim Ducks second round pick Justin Schultz becomes a free agent on July 1, the Rangers will attempt to land the former college teammate of Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh.
Brooks says that under normal circumstances the Rangers would pursue Schultz, but it may intensify with the uncertainty surrounding Michael Sauer who has been out with a concussion since December.
He is 6-1 and 185 lbs. Schultz is ranked 21st by The Hockey News in their Future Watch issue and is listed as the Ducks best prospect. He is a Hobey Baker nominee for the second straight season.
You can never have enough depth on defense and I would expect the Rangers to go on a big push for him. Toronto wanted him when they acquired Jake Gardiner (a Badger as well) and Joffrey Lupul so they will also pursue him in a big way. The Rangers have two players who can sell Schultz on the Rangers so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
