According to Elliotte Friedman, at CBC, Anaheim Ducks draft pick Justin Schultz informed Ducks management that he doesn’t intend to sign with the organization and wants to become a free agent on July 1.
This confirms what has been speculated the last few weeks about Schultz.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that if/when the Rangers sign free agent defenseman Justin Schultz, that would make Michael Del Zotto expendable and put him at the forefront of the Rangers trade chips.
Del Zotto is an RFA this summer.
Brooks writes that no one is suggesting the Rangers are the front runners, or a lock to sign Schultz.
Adam Rotter: Since the Rangers can’t sign Justin Schultz until July 1, and there is no guarantee that they will, it would seem like Michael Del Zotto won’t be included in any sort of draft related trade. Del Zotto has a skill set that no one else in the organization does, and even if they sign Schultz, I wouldn’t trade Del Zotto. It would give them their best chance to replicate what the organization had, in terms of style of players, with Brian Leetch and Sergei Zubov.
Late last month, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune said on the radio that he believes that Justin Schultz has made up his mind on what team he will sign with and is just waiting until July 1 to do so.
Russo writes that the team that signs Schultz may have to deal with some accusations from Anaheim, “I guarantee you the Anaheim Ducks will go after them with a tampering charge, because the Anaheim Ducks have been building that case for the last couple of months. They have all sorts of e-mails from him basically saying, ‘I’m coming there, I’m coming there,’ and suddenly, for some reason, he’s not coming there.”
Russo believes that Toronto is the team that will sign Schultz. Bob McKenzie tweeted yesterday that he wouldn’t be surprised if Schultz landed with a team in Canada.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were fined in 2009 when coach Ron Wilson made comments about trying to sign the Sedin twins.
In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers have pinpointed their need for a right defenseman to slot in after Dan Girardi as their top priority.
Brooks writes that Justin Schultz will be the defenseman first on the Rangers list.
Some right handed UFA defenseman include Michal Rozsival, Dennis Wideman, Pavel Kubina, Joe Corvo and Sami Salo.
Anton Stralman is a right handed shot and an RFA.
1:12PM: Darren Dreger writes at TSN that the Rangers will show considerable interest in Schultz.
11:45AM: At CBC, Elliotte Friedman writes that Justin Schultz will have a lot of options to consider when he becomes a free agent, and says that the Rangers shouldn’t be overlooked as one of those options.
He says that having two former teammates, Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh along with the Rangers not being shy about putting college players into important roles could help them.
Adam Rotter: Stepan, McDonagh, Chris Kreider and Carl Hagelin all had big roles for the Rangers this season and in the playoffs. Going back a couple of years, Matt Gilroy came straight out of college and played with the team. I think that if Schultz signs he will get every opportunity to make the team and be a focus on the PP.
8:01PM: Bob McKenzie said on Insider Trading that it is unlikely that the Ducks will be able to trade the rights to Schultz but that teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers, among others, are going to strongly pursue Schultz.
2:06PM: At the Edmonton Journal, Jim Matheson writes that one direction that the Detroit Red Wings may go in to replace Nick Lidstrom would be to sign free agent to-be Justin Schultz.
Matheson writes that the Rangers and Oilers are “hot to trot” to try and sign Schultz.
Most people believe that Ryan Suter is going to sign with Detroit.
