Buzz: Michael Del Zotto Knows His Deal Will Get Done

Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto told Blueshirts United that he loves playing in New York and is confident that a new contract will get done.

He said “it’s is going to happen, it’s just something out of my control. I did my job this past year in trying to help the team win. Management and my agent are working things out. I love New York and understand the business side of things, too.”

John Tortorella said on the radio yesterday “Michael had a tremendous bounce back year, defended very well and had a very good playoff until the end. By no means are we trying to move Michael Del Zotto or lose him. We are looking to add more on the back end.”

The Rangers are believed to want Del Zotto back on a two-year deal worth between $1.75 and $2.25 million per season.

Mailbag: The Michael Del Zotto Situation

Adam Rotter: I don’t think it’s a matter of people giving up on Del Zotto, but more of the Rangers needing to give up something to get a Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan, and Del Zotto is at the top of the list of players most fans would give up.

I think a lot of fans are also willing to deal Del Zotto because of the defensemen the Rangers have, Marc Staal, Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi, and the defensemen they have in the system, Tim Erixon and Dylan McIlrath. None of those players have the skillset or offensive potential that Del Zotto has though and offensive defensemen are hard to come by.

The Rangers reportedly don’t want to move Del Zotto, yet 50% of fans voted to say that they would be okay with him being moved.

Del Zotto is still an un-signed RFA but it is expected that Del Zotto will be re-signed shortly.
