Recap: Alain Vigneault’s Comments Today

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault, after practice, met with the media:

  • What is going on with Henrik Lundqvist, “he is day to day right now. I can’t say for sure he will be good to go on Thursday but I can’t say that he won’t be. He has something he has been dealing with for a little bit of time. Since we had 4 days in between games we felt it was the right time to nip this in the bud. We have a lot of hockey to play coming up and we are trying to get him to be as healthy as a player can be during the regular seasons. You are never at 100% during the regular season.”
  • Has it impacted his play, “No…he had a shutout in Washington. In my opinion he was on top of his game. He has a nagging little something we are trying to get rid of.”
  • What doe Chris Kreider add to the lineup, “speed, size and going to the net hard. I saw him today, he shoots the puck as well as I have seen any player shoot the puck. Hopefully he can put those attribute together and help us win a game against Philly.”
  • What exactly is wrong with Lundqvist,”I wouldn’t even know. I just know it’s something that it hasn’t been long. It was just brought to my attention today.

  • Could he play tonight if there was a game, “tonight…no. That is why he his day to day.”
  • Are you convinced that the team knows what you want from them, “there is still some understanding on their part to put together. That being said, our situation right now, in my estimation has a lot less to do with that and a lot more to do with competing better, competing harder and having a push where a push is needed on the ice. For some reason that hasn’t been there as consistently as it needs to be at the NHL level. Hopefully we will be better and that is what we are talking about.”
  • Is not having a push surprising, “I am new to this group. I am getting to know them, they are getting to know me. I had no expectations one way or the other. I do know that my teams compete, my teams play hard and are hard to play against. We haven’t been that way and it’s my responsibly to get us there.”
  • Are you confident in Cam Talbot, “yes, without a doubt. He had a very strong training camp. I have seen his games on tape in Hartford and I saw him live. In Hartford last week they were down by two, Manchester had a 5 on 3 and I think 21 chances in the game…and the Wolf Pack won it 4-3 in a shootout. In the third and OT he was the difference.”
  • Does he have the right compete level, “without a doubt. That is a position where you have to be a competitor and if we need him to play, we will need him to play. We have 8 in 15. If it’s Thursday or after that, I am confident in him.”
  • “This is a team game and our execution needs to get better. Our goaltending needs to get better. I’m sure if you ask Hank he will be the first to tell you. That is one area, you look at the games last night. SJ and Det are 0-0. And Pitt and Colorado, Colorado has no business being in that game but Giguere is keeping him in there and help them pull out a 1-0 win. We have a goalie that has done that for many years and we believe in him and are confident he will do for us what we think he will.”
  • On getting used to a coaches personality, “I can’t answer that. From my standpoint, my direction and standards, my expectations for them are very clear. It’s not hard to understand what I want and it’s a matter of them putting the right compete level on the ice. If you do that then you are in pretty good shape. We played two games where our compete and our push were what is expected of this group. That is what we need to see on a regular basis. That is just about being a pro. Being a pro is about preparing yourself, being your best on the ice and your teammates knowing that night in night out that you will be the best you can be. So far we haven’t shown that consistency but we are working on that and we are going to be better.”
  • Do you think the players are getting closer to knowing the system, “I feel we have done it to great execution for periods of time. If we can do it for periods of time then we can do it more consistently. We are working on it and getting better.”
  • On playing closer to the vest with no Hank, “if for whatever reason we need to use Talbot then our guys are going to work real hard for him. It’s going to be his first opportunity, as far as I know, as far as a regular season NHL game. I would expect our group to rally around that.”
  • Is Henrik’s injury upper body or lower body, “I wouldn’t even….I work with the players that are there and available. I don’t pay a lot of attention to the guys who don’t practice or play.”
  • Is Philly a 1-7 team, “I don’t think so. For whatever reason, the games I have watched they come at you with a lot of drive and that is what I expect on Thursday.
