Recap: Alain Vigneault Pre Game Comments

Alain Vigneault6:57PM: Vigneault spoke with Sam Rosen before the game:

  • On Detroit, “they play a smart high percentage game with and without the puck. They are one of the best at legal interference, slowing teams down without taking a penalty. They have skilled players with experiences. It will be a good test for us to see how we respond. I think we played a good solid game against Tampa. We got beat by great goaltending, we couldn’t score more than one and hopefully we will fare better.”
  • On Zetterberrg, “one of the best two way players in the league. Elite player who protects the puck well, has a good stick and has great vision.”
  • What do you want to do better tonight, “score more goals. We had great opportunities, grade A chances. We need a better net presence and getting to rebounds. If we do that we will have a better chance to score.”

1:26PM: Alain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers morning skate (Rangers):

  • On rest vs practice, “It’s…rest and recovery are so important in today’s game. The demands in the schedule, the demands in the game and the mental demands to be able to perform, it’s taxing and in a season like his where more games are condensed because it’s an Olympic year. Players are going to play in the Olympics…if you ask me a percentage of working out, practice time, rest, nutrition, rest and recovery are at the top of the heap, top of the pile as far as important.”
  • On Detroit, “They are a team that, in my estimation, have a real solid foundation. They do things consistently and consistently the right way. They are strong on the puck, hard on the puck as far as reloading and back checking, trying to get the puck back and when they have it they work like bastards to keep that puck. It’s unreal how hard those guys work. The one thing they do better than almost any other team in the league is their net presence. It’s always one guy on each line that almost seems like he is designated to stand in front of the goalie to make it hard on him. That is why they have been one of the best teams in the league for a long time.”

  • More on Detroit, “they are going to come after us. They will have their D involved. They are a good skilled team and we will have to be at our best. If I’m a player or coach coming in here, I’m looking at the standings, this is going to be a good game. It’s going to be a real tough match up for both teams.”
  • On Pouliot with Brassard and Zuccarello, I think in Ben’s case, for the last while, he is playing with more confidence, he is more assertive in his one on one battles. People who don’t watch the game closely….he is one of our most physical forwards. He finishes checks, he makes it hard on the D and because of that when he has the puck he has it for an extra second to make those skill plays to those two players who make that line effective for us.”
  • On Brian Boyle‘s hit on Victor Hedman, “it’s very difficult for a player to do. They turn their backs. It seems more that the onus is on the player coming in than the player receiving the check. That part of the game has changed and you have to adjust. If the refs makes another call it could be a penalty and it’s very challenging on the players.”
  • On Derek Stepan’s game, “Step’s line, in the last while here, for quite some time, they have been matched up most of the time against the other team’s top line. There is some challenge that goes with that. You need to make sure you are on the right side of the play and keep the puck in front of you and what that does sometimes is offensively there is less opportunities and Step on that line with Kreider and Nash is usually the low guy so offensively it can be challenging. But when you play against the other team’s top offensive players you play against players who may cheat a little more toward the offensive side so it should enable you to get some good opportunities. Last game I don’t think that line was as good as it was prior but there is some good chemistry there and I have a lot of confidence in those three players.”
  • On More from Step, “yes….yes. He is very demanding of himself. He wants to improve. He has great qualities as a player and he is still a very young player that in my estimation is only going to get better.”
