Derek Stepan

Read: Derek Stepan wants to become a leader

Early on in the playoffs, Alain Vigneault was asked if he thought Derek Stepan was becoming a leader on this Rangers team. Vigneault said, “I think he is a young guy on our team, real bright. Can analyze things, in my estimation the right way and as he gets more experience and more confidence I think he will assume a big role with that group and that team.”

Stepan said that he has learned a lot from the veteran leaders on the Rangers and wants to take what he has learned onto the ice. (Daily News)

He said that he is still learning how to be a leader and that leading by example is how the veterans on the team do their job. Stepan also said that it’s necessary to keep a “good vibe” going in the locker room. (Daily News)

Stepan set a career high this season in points with 57. He also took 30 more shots on goal this season than he did in his first two 82 game seasons.

In 24 playoff games, Stepan had 15 points which is one more than he had in his first 37 career playoff games.

By series, Stepan had 2 goals and 1 assist in seven games against Philly, 2 assists in seven games against Pittsburgh, 3 goals and 4 assists in five games against Montreal, 2 assists in five games against LA.

Seems like there is a lot of negativity towards Stepan from some fans across NYR boards. People hold him to a higher standard after his hold out last year for a bigger contract (and rightly so), but I feel as though the numbers he posted 2 seasons ago were not a fluke and he can and will be at that level again. He is still young and will continue to progress in all aspects of the game. Can't forget that he played the whole season with Nash who just couldn't buy a goal and Kreider who was still a rookie. Maybe he isn't the true superstar center we want but he will be damn fine.

As far as leadership goes, he will continue to grow as that too. Don't forget he captained the World junior team to a gold as well as being a leader in college.

Hopefully Step hits the weight room hard this offseason so he isn't easily pushed around anymore.

I'm sure he could be a leader by representing the team well and playing with integrity, but I don't feel like he'll ever be a vocal leader. Just doesn't come off like that. Still, nothing wrong with that.

Stepan seems to often be indecisive with the puck. Sort of like a Senator repeatedly voting "present." And we see how well that has worked out

@oddmanrush He isn't and will never be a leader. He's not tough enough to lead by example.

@wally1616 @oddmanrush Wait, he comes back to play the rest of the playoffs after missing one game because he had surgery on his jaw and he's "not tough enough to lead by example???"

@Victor Kucharew @wally1616 @oddmanrush Nope he's not.
 Way to soft a player overall.
