"Didn't miss more than 5 tackles in a season"

Cro: b***h please, I can do that in a single game.

I don't think Cro gets himself into a position to make that many tackles in a game.

As a measure of his consistency, Arenas had a positive PFF grade on defense in each of his five seasons for a cumulative +10.5.  That's over 1782 snaps which would be a season and a half for a full time player.

He also graded out positively in preseason 2013 and 2014 (combined +2.4).

I will be very surprised if fewer than 7 DBs make the final 53.

@WhatsUp

It was usually 10 or more with Rex and Mangini.

I would expect at least six CBs and four safeties.  Maybe one more of each depending on special teams needs.

That was an error on my part. I meant CBs. Oops!

@Keith Carcaterra

He's not in trouble.

Contrast the Daily News headline "Jets Mad at Geno" with what was actually said (he won't be disciplined, it's no big deal) and it's just another mountain out of a molehill.

In the Jets' defense they did explain why they don't want him throwing - it's because doctors advised him not to until his bandages are all off because they are concerned about infection.

@Bent @Keith Carcaterra You should have heard the guys at ESPN talk about it, they were talking as if he went out boxing or something. There was a caller who professed to be a Giants fan and even he thought they were going a little too far.

Yeah I heard he was being mocked for wearing eye black when actually those are part of his bandages that haven't been removed yet.

That kinda sounds a bit dubious to me, to be fair.

Could Geno  come back early if we get an oil can.  It work in the Wizard of OZ on the Tin Man. I don't know just in case the hardware in his jaw start rusting due to rain.

I think Geno is more like the Scarecrow than the Tin Man.

And we all know who Bradysucks thinks is the Cowardly Lion.

Ha ha ha The scare cro he does need a brain Ha ha . I thought my some oil get him back maybe tomorrow.

The Jets have 31 players that are 6-5 or taller where the tall team. Watch out for the little team

didn't we draft Pryor for his tackling skills and his range, and all he's shown us so far is that those are his poorest qualities of his game. What's the deal? If he continues to play so poorly, and Cro continues to get beat, do you move Cro back to safety and put Skrine on the outside and put McDougle on slot duty? Our secondary is supposed to be out strong point isn't it? And we have two guys who really are not looking good starting at the moment.

I fear as well that Cro wouldn't be disciplined either at safety, but the amount of man to man coverage that Bowles defense calls for isn't necessarily putting him in the best position for success. I can easily see Cro getting picked on all year, although he's good enough of a player to not get beat 100% of the time, he can still be our Achilles heel if Bowles can't find away to get him some help on the outside.

And how long must we wait for Pryor to adjust to NFL speed? With one of our starting safeties often taking bad angles, and one of our starting corners unable to turn his hips, it's a little scary of a thought heading into the season. And I know how early it is, but this is undoubtedly a problem at the moment.

He's typically been worse in zone than man.  That's how we got him from San Diego, because they changed scheme and he was struggling in it.

Pryor will be out for "at least a few days" due to a death in the family and will not play on Friday.  Another setback.

Cro doesn't play well in space and can't tackle.  The only argument I can see for playing him at safety is that he can keep things in front of him and won't need to turn his hips which seems to be a big problem for him since his injury.  However, I don't think he's disciplined enough to avoid coming up to fast and taking bad angles, which would force him to turn his hips anyway.

I think Pryor's tackling, technique wise, is fine and his range is really good.  He just hasn't adjusted to NFL speed yet and perhaps doesn't make reads fast enough, therefore he takes bad angles and it's that which leads to him missing tackles, not a lack of tackling ability or range.

I like the signing.  We are weak in returns and safety.  This guy can do both.

They might need a replacement for Cro.......

Won't be this guy.  While he has started on the outside (in 2012) he's a completely different type of player.

I wonder how much Owusu's concussion contributed to this signing. While he's got plenty of athletic talent, his propensity for concussions should rule him out of a roster spot IMO.

If Arenas can be a competent KR, he's likely better than anyone on the roster not named Owusu.

I think a ball-hawking free safety would fill a VERY useful void on this team, even if he only plays situationally.

They shoud have drafted Tyler Lockett. I watched Seattle in pre-season and that guy looks like he will be a top return man in the NFL......Seattle really knows how to draft.....

That rookie RB for the Lions also looked unstoppable.....

I would love to see the Jets start focusing more on adding players with explosive capabilities at RB and on special teams .....something the team hasn't done in years......

I think Devin Smith is a huge loss for the Jets.....They need what he brings

@bradysucks  Yeah well we'll see how long he lasts in the NFL. 3rd round pick for a 180lb return man may not be the best way to draft. Time will tell.

He was also drafted before our 3rd round pick...

The fact that they waited this long to bring him in isn't a good sign (they probably like other guys already on the roster more), but Arenas can help the team with capable if unspectacular play in a variety of roles (slot CB, free safety, strong safety, designated subpackage blitzer, kick returner, punt returner), as you noted.

I wouldn't rule out him making the 53.  A solid player, who knows the scheme both from Bowles and DQC coach Slowik in AZ in 2013 and DB coach Joe Danna (and OLB coach Mark Collins) in Atlanta last year.

Nice writeup, Bent.

@tsjc68  They may have been hoping someone would emerge as a punt returner. Graham may still show something, but If Kerley is the answer then we're not asking the right question.
