100% without question the Jets were already moving Coples outside before they picked Richardson.

I actually have a copy of the depth chart BEFORE the draft which lists Coples as the RUSH.

Also, as I've written about many times, Coples had already started the transition to edge rusher at the end of the 2012 season and even now he STILL plays with his hand in the dirt almost 3/4 of the time (307 out of 435 snaps to be exact).

Again, with 100% confidence this is something I can unequivocally state.

A lot of us have questioned Woody's willingness or interest in making the changes in leadership and coaching necessary to turn this franchise around, but would he have the business savvy to at least recognize change is needed and to hire a new VP of Football Operations and then delegate the decisions re Rex and Idzik, etc. to the new guy?

This would allow Woody to acknowledge the need for and commitment to improvement while also distancing himself from whatever decisions/measures are taken to accomplish it.    It could, in effect, put the entire organization on notice, including Rex and Idzik, despite whatever understanding's they may have had with him, and pave the way for hiring a new GM, HC and staff, and scouting dept should that be the decision of the new VP.    Most important, it would make both Rex and Idzik accountable to someone other than Woody and provide a check and balance to whenever either are about to do something stupid.

A good businessman who's perhaps too close or too loyal to some of the people who may be part of the problem might see this as the best way to change directions of the team without having anyone's blood on his hands.

Anyone know off hand what day FA kicks off this coming offseason?

Ok I'm going to say this. I know Richardson was Idzik's best pick, but it forced Coples to move outside and out of position.

Did Calvin Pryor play at all?

I haven't heard his name mentioned in a while.

Hey Bent, Is it usual for Rex to use his RUSH LB on running downs and to jam outside WR's but not actually RUSH the QB very often???

I don't think he did that with Suggs.

@Bent I don't think that's the argument man, the argument is that they originally drafted him to play inside, they saw his rookie year that he couldn't so they had to spend another first round pick on a  DL the next year. It's yet another example of how inept they've been at drafting players.

@will898 Another football career ruined by this crappy organization. And they wonder why no one wants to come work for them.

McGeorge

@will898 Richardson is not Idizks best pick, he's the ONLY pick who has worked out.  Maybe Miliner will eventually be able to play a full season and be good.  Maybe Calvin Pryor will someday start.  Maybe Jayce Amaro will be good enough to play a lot more.

@will898

Apparently Rexy was planning on doing that BEFORE they drafted Richardson...

@McGeorge

Yeah and he actually made a good play or two...

@fatrex @Bent

I don't agree with that either.  He did a fine job as an interior rusher - was more productive in 2012 than Wilkerson was in 2011 or 2012.

He actually was 3rd in the league at his position for pass rush productivity.

Hold on!

Rex said, "  this team is going to be far from an embarrassment when
the season is over.”

@fatrex Considering Rex worked Coples out as an OLB at his pro day...yes.

Bent

@fatrex @Bent Obviously they felt/feel he can thrive there.

There's a ton of overlap between the two roles.  This isn't that big of a deal IMO.

@fatrex In Rex's own words they always envisioned moving him outside. Are you really going to argue against this now? There are things you'll actually be right about, but this isn't one of them.

@Brendan

Rex actually said after Coples rookie season (before Idzik was hired) that Coples experience rushing inside during his rookie season, will prepare him for rushing outside -- like it did for Suggs. So, to me, the decision was made before Richardson was picked.

@Brendan RYAN: "Quinton's a guy, he's probably athletic enough to stand up and play linebacker and all that, but that's not why we brought him here. He's going to have his hand in the dirt. He reminds me of a similar type player to Shaun Ellis, a Trevor Pryce type. He's in that kind of mold, very athletic for an inside pass rusher and a 3-4 guy. That's a fair comparison between those two."  This was on draft day. Don't see how I'm wrong.

@fatrex @Brendan

So you are saying rex couldn't possibly have changed his mind about Coples?

No matter how hard Brendan tries, it is literally impossible to defend Lord Idzik's Reign of Ineptitude.

fatrex
fatrex

@a57se @fatrex @Brendan Was that a question for me? They thought Coples could play inside, that turned out not be a strength so they drafted Richardson. It's another example of how poor Ryan is at recognizing talent

fatrex
fatrex

@hitchhiker This wasn't under Idzik, it was Tanny, but Rex obviously was intricately involved. We need a proven football talent evaluator here this offseason because there is no one currently in the organization worthy of making the decision on a top 5 draft pick

a57se
a57se

@fatrex @a57se @Brendan

I think Rex was toying with the idea of moving Coples outside and then saw the scouting tape on Richardson and fell in love with the idea.

hitchhiker

@fatrex assuming Coples moved to OLB because Idzik drafted Richardson, isn't the fact that Tanny drafted Coples irrelevant?

Ultimately, the issue here is poor roster construction. They DL is the strength of the team. They should probably use a 4-3 defense to utilize that talent, but the LBs are not suited for that, so Coples gets moved to Rush LB. Is Coples failing to meet his potential because he is playing out of position? Or is it issues with his effort or something similar?
