Is the Harvin stuff just speculation ?

williamg1

Well, at least we only wasted a $7M and a 6th rounder on Harvin.

@a57se Waiting for 57 to slide in some cheap, uninformed dig at the Mets. Waiting.

@hazard2012 Like scenario proposed, yes.  One caveat: I wouldn't cut Walt Powell before camp. He's at least serviceable as a returner.  I actually think think he has some upside.   Also, hasn't Salas had enough looks??  I mean maybe Gailey will be good for him, but we've kept Salas around for a while now.  I think I would try to resign Harvin for a lower number if he's available after the "waiting period."

@hazard2012

You don't show the contracts you doled out...that helps in evaluating.

a57se
a57se

@hazard2012

Not sure why you are cutting Hakim, Bohanon, Winters,and powell.

You don't save anything in cap space and if nothing else, they are camp bodies that you need to pace your better players.

Who here said "there's no downside?"

@J. Smooth @jimmyc

Something about Mel Kiper and his latest mock draft?

My guess, Cooper?

EDIT:

Guess it is: Kiper has Mariota for jets.

Nah, not gonna bust your chops today...

I hope the Mets do well especially for my Jet fan brethren who love the Mets.

Wen injured draft picks from a prior year come back healthy. I do it. A mindset thing.

hazard2012

@a57se @hazard2012

I cut Hakim, Bo, Winters and Powell because I don't think they bring much to the table and believe that I can do better in UDFAcy, etc or by going back and picking up some minor pieces from among unsigned FA's, etc.

As you know, the GM sim doesn't allow for camp bodies, etc., and ends before you really complete your roster.   With the above team, I'm not worried too much about camp bodies.   This team could compete with just about anyone right now.

@hazard2012 @a57se

The free agent lists include guys you can get real cheap...

I just don't see the point in cutting them before you have to but whatever.

a57se
a57se

@Marvel

I don't see any new camp bodies on his list...no need to cut the old ones until you get the new ones...

minor point but still valid.

Are you gonna miss that 7M?

Really?

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@joemustgo @a57se @J. Smooth Strongly resisting the urge to respond to that.

Failing...

Stop. Generation K was merely a ploy to counteract the Yankees "Core 4". None of those pitchers had ever pitched on the Major League level with success. All three of the Mets young guys have. End of discussion.

Marvel
Marvel

He can't name the UDFAs we've yet to sign.

And I don't do sims , is it possible he cut those guys to make room for his new player additions ?

harold

@a57se

So if we get a 26 year old Harvin to take 7.5 million and give up a 4th is that a bad trade?

williamg1
williamg1

Yes. Last offseason we were told spending $7m on a CB or another WR was prohibitive and a waste. Well, once we committed to dumping $7M on Harvin (when the season was already over) it became no biggie.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68

Yes...that is one or two more players we CAN'T sign this off season.

Yes, because the calculus at that point was different.

a57se

@williamg1

Yup remember 68 telling us that ALL the CB's were OVERPAYED last year and how smart Idzik was for not overpaying!!!

Now we're supposed to overpay Harvin...

Unwise say you?

tsjc68
tsjc68

Wake me when we spend that first 60M and are now sad that we can't spend the next 7.

harold
harold

@a57se

I will take that as a no.  Thanks

williamg1
williamg1

We committed to wasting $1M per game of cap space once the season was over. $7M for 7 games. I prefer to dedicate that money to address needs BEFORE the season is over.

Plus, Harvin is a nut.

tsjc68
tsjc68

Overpaying Harvin with no guaranteed money is very different than overpaying Dominique Rodgers Cromartie with lots of guaranteed money.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68

I like you best when you are sleeping...

a57se
a57se

@harold

Take it as a yes.

I thought you were brighter than this.

tsjc68
tsjc68

We have like 70M of cap space over this two-year span.

7M with no long-term repercussions is a tiny price to pay for the gamble. If it didn't work, we're not negatively impacted in any real way. Harvin's brief trip in Green won't actually prevent Maccagnan from building a good roster for 2015.

That's why the trade was smart. Not because it was destined to work, but becaus if it worked it would be great and if it didn't we wouldn't be harmed.

fatrex
fatrex

@tsjc68 I think the point here is that Harvin was not  a necessary move for a team that was obviously hot garbage, and now it's cost us flexibility (although we have plenty, more is always better)

harold
harold

@a57se

State your own opinion or someone will state it for you.

Also under the premise I laid out for Harvin why do you think it would be a bad trade?

williamg1
williamg1

At this point, we have so many holes that we need every dollar possible. And then we need to resign our d line.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68

10% of your cap space is significant, i don't know where you learned math and economics but you ought to get your money back.

tsjc68
tsjc68

It doesn't cost us flexibility, though. It just doesn't.

a57se
a57se

@harold

I did state my opinion, you just didn't get it.

tsjc68
tsjc68

There's not enough players to sign to possibly spend all that money anyway.

It's a non-factor.

a57se
a57se

@williamg1

Meh, what's 7 million dollars...we can just throw it away.

We can throw more away by just keeping harvin at 10.5 million.

We can afford it!!!

fatrex
fatrex

@tsjc68 any time you lose a draft pick for nothing it costs you flexibility, that extra 7 million could go to Justin Houston or someone, c'mon.

a57se
a57se

@harold

As for your hypothetical, that is still too much money for harvin and his headaches.

Minnesota and Seattle figured it out, let's learn from their mistakes instead of making another one ourselves.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68

So throw it away!!!

Brilliant response!!!

I feel face palmed!

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@fatrex @tsjc68 Does it though? I'm pretty sure that 7M only affected last years cap, not this years.

tsjc68
tsjc68

We will be able to afford any and all free agents we want. Not being able to carry that 7M forward in a year where we already have 40M plus of room impacts NOTHING.

In fact, it helps us approach the CBA spending minimums, which HELPS US.

tsjc68
tsjc68

No, don't throw it away. Spend it on a gamble, like Harvin.

@tsjc68 We do not need help approaching the CBA spending minimums
