Read: Ryan McDonagh Is Enjoying His Trip To Kazakhstan

In the NY Times, Jeff Klein exchanged emails with Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh who is playing in the KHL for Barys.

McDonagh told Klein that his head coach doesn’t speak English but that the team’s goalie coach is always around the non-Russian players to translate what the coach is saying. He noted that the language barrier hasn’t been as tough as he thought it would be.

On his time in Kazakhstan, McDonagh said “The experience has been better than I expected it to be. Astana is a great place and the Barys team has treated me very well. The atmosphere of the games is great — the crowd is always chanting and beating drums. The group of guys on the team all get along well and play hard for each other. That’s all you can ask for when you’re joining a team in the situation like I did.”

I'm a fan of what Idzik has done for the most part ...with that said I don't think it's a bad idea to swing a mid-season deal for a WR. Our draft pick WRs aren't going to help any this year, Hill is gone, Nelson has been ineffective & now banged up, & Deck has been bothered by this hammy all season. Maybe someone like VJax from TB could be available for a 3rd day draft pick??

Again, I'm all about building thru the draft & spending wisely ...but I'm also about keeping Rex here & developing our young QB. I think adding another weapon now makes a lot of sense. Just cause your plan at WR hasn't exactly worked, Idzik, doesn't mean it was a bad plan. Just gotta adapt as you go...

*thinks about Braylon in '09*

Maybe they really should let Decker sit a few weeks. Or maybe they're trying to wait until after this stretch to do so.

I doubt vjax would go for a second day pick. I think we could however get a familiar name in Santana moss though. Seems like he's the odd man out with the djax signing.

A trade may make sense, depending on the specifics. But mainly I think geno needs to improve and have some continuity around him.

Nelson does need to make a stunning improvement but this wasn't exactly what I had in mind.

That's good news.  Reports from earlier in the week made it sound like Nelson would be missing extended time, as in "months".

@williamg1 Yeah, if he can gut it out for the next 13 days (three games: @SD, Denver, @NE), he'll have 16 days to rest (one game: Buff)

First off, your friend is 29.  He probably hasn't had to think much about what he eats, how much he works out, or how much hair he has.  Once you hit 30, things start to deteriorate, and by 35 you are lucky if you don't look 40.  You might notice how much fatter your friends get once they get into their thirties, especially if they've been living a bit hard.  That being said, the window for getting to know a much younger woman is rapidly closing on your friend.  Even if he's in great shape, do you think he'll still be able to pull numbers from high school girls in 3 years, 5 years, 8 years?  Not ones that don't have deep seated grandpa issues.

Second, most 17 year old girls don't have the confidence to talk to strange men on the subway.  These days, most of them are so assimilated into the Borg collective that is Facebook and social media, that they can't even look up from their phones long enough to notice that there's a world going on around them.  If this girl was amicable to your friend, then she's either not really 17 (could be one of those forty year old women that look young and go back to high school), or she's emotionally much older.  It's not like your friend was picking up his niece at high school and caught the girl's attention by leaning on his Firebird while he pumped some REO Speedwagon.  She obviously made herself available enough for conversation, which signifies that she might have already made the jump to living, breathing human being rather than some reactionary piece of soft tissue.

In this day and age, legality is all that matters.  If two dudes can get married and attack each other's behinds like hungry anteaters, then scoring some young strange isn't going to raise a moral eyebrow outside of the ultra-square community.  We're talking summer-spring romance here, not old-man-winter-liquors-up-baby-new-year-and-sticks-it-in romance.  And besides, you really don't know the girl's situation.  Maybe she was a hard working Rwandan prostitute from 11-16; or maybe she'll be dead by 25; or maybe she has no plans of giving it up, so it's not even on her mind.  Your friend is just going to have to get to know her and figure out if she's masquerading or really a genuine person.

To sum it up, tell your friend to throw some Jonas Brothers on the tape deck, pop a few Diet Sprites, and ease into this thing.  It might be the best thing that ever happened to him.  Then again, her father might track him down, tie his balls to his RC drone, and crash him into the Hudson.  That's just life.  You've got to live it.

I agree with that, DJF. But not knowing if or how long Decker is going to play each week doesn't help much right now. If we had a solid #2 paired with Kerley & Salas that would help enough with depth that Decker going down doesn't handcuff us in the passing game.

As far as continuity, adding Braylon in '09 & Tone in '10 only helped as far as the team's success & with Sanchez's development. It was taking away the weapons (Cotch & Bray after '10) that caused the downward spiral.

@Bytor @williamg1

I was thinking about Salas the other day... what if he's the new Wayne Chrebet?

The guy who came into camp as the ignored 10th guy on the depth chart and just kept making catches while everyone above him struggled and unexpectedly became an offensive fixture despite not really doing anything super-well other than "not dropping the ball"?

That would be nice.

"Oh, really?  I went to that carnival five years ago too.  Wait, I have some pictures on my phone.  Oh what a coincidence, there's a picture of me, aged 12, with you in the background, aged 24.  And there's my Dad looking disapprovingly at some 17 year old who's eyeing me up.  Anyway shall we get back to making out?"

Yes, 29 and 17 is inappropriate.

@Brendan Just asking for a friend. He's a 29 year old dude and met this really cool 17 year old chick on subway (didn't realize she was 17 at the time) and got her number. What do you think he should do?

Bent

@tsjc68 @Bent I don't think he's married...although he does have like 18 kids.  A Cromartie-esque kids to wives ratio.

Sure, he adopted the kids from a Haitian Orphanage, but still...

This is going to sound like a weird comparison, but I see some Kelce in Salas. Mind you, Salas doesn't play TE. But what stood out to me about Kelce is his vision when the ball is in his hands. He isn't going to shake anyone, but he makes the most of the blocking in front of him without wasted lateral movement. I thought Salas had that type of potential on WR screens and stuff. He could be good with the ball in his hands.

williamg1
williamg1

@tsjc68 @Bytor @williamg1 Salas has what Stephan Hill lacked: he's a football player. He doesn't have Hill's measurables, but the guy has good instincts.

DarrolRayFanClub

@tsjc68 @Bytor @williamg1 Salas was actually a fourth round pick a few years ago. Chrebet not only wasn't drafted but wasn't going to be invited to any team's camp. It was a gesture by the Jets to take one of Hofstra's standouts, and that's what made his rise so remarkable. But I get what you're saying, it would be nice if Salas winds up being the fourth round WR that works out for us.

It's partially what makes me a little concerned that we gave up on Jalen Saunders so quickly.

In the past few years, we've been the team wisely scooping up quality players that other teams foolishly discarded too soon (like Jaiquawn Jarrett, Austin Howard, David Nelson, Greg Salas, Zach Sudfeld, Leger Douzable, etc.) and then we bailed on Saunders so quickly.  If the Cardinals turn him into something useful, that will give me the sads.

Maybe he just isn't the same guy after the seizure, and that's why we moved on so uncharacteristically fast.

From the article linked below:

The ability to consent to have sex does not give 17-year-olds the right to move away from, or cease to be under the supervision of, their parents or legal guardians. Parents of minors who leave home without permission can go to the Family Court and seek an order forcing the children to return home, unless the parents can be proven to be unfit. Parents can move to have their 17-year-olds returned home specifically because the children are consenting to sexual intercourse or sexual behavior. Why? Although the children can now consent to sexual relations, the results of those sexual relations will be visited upon the 17-year-olds' parents. They will be financially responsible for the prenatal care and the health and well-being of any offspring born as a result of the 17-year-olds' decisions to engage in consensual sexual relations, at least until the 17-year-olds become adults at 18, and possibly longer.

(imagines an alternate universe in which we used the picks we drafted Oday Aboushi and Will Campbell with to move up 10 spots in 2013 R3 to draft Travis Kelce instead of Brian Winters, then resigned Vlad Ducasse this winter to be starting LG and still drafted Dakota Dozier to be his security blanket, and now have a Brick-Vlad-Mangold-Colon-Giacomini OL with Travis Kelce and Jace Amaro as our twin TE receiving threats)

tsjc68

@williamg1 @privatejet @tsjc68

Yeah, that.

No matter how fine she is, if I'm 29 I'm not going to be getting down with a highschooler (even if she is of legal age to consent).  We're just at different phases of our lives and she should be with someone nearer to her own life experience level (and so should I).

I'm going to find someone close to my own age.

The youngest girl (relative to my own age) I ever dated was seven years younger (I was 27, she was 20) and even that was somewhat uncomfortable for me and only lasted a short while.

Vlad should have been the RG all along and Colon the LG.  It was obvious they moved Colon to RG (where he had never played in the NFL) to accommodate Winters when actually both Vlad and Colon would have been better on the other side.

If your 29 year old friend has a lot in common with a 17 year old girl, it again makes me seriously question your 29 year old friend.

It's quite unseemly.  Even if she's mature for her age, he's probably not mature enough for HIS age.
