@williamg1 To be fair, I made the same mistake talking to my LA friend. But I was about 15 beers deep and...other things deep as well. I also don't have team managers who are hired for this exact purpose.

@williamg1 You see, that sounds really stupid until you realize he's talking about time difference. Plenty of people don't know the time changes from one time zone to another.

@a57se

Undecided.

The kid has possibilities. Hasn't been good, but hasn't been poor to this point; just mediocre. He could still go either way.

My beef with this pick is, the nepotism angle.

Sanchez, Rex & Tanny were raked for the BFF Scotty pick.

Rex was laughed at big-time for taking his son's QB.

Aside from a couple of passing feature stories in his first camp, no one's said boo about Idzik taking his son's teammate, even though he hasn't contributed much of anything. And yes, he probably could have been had as a UDFA, as he didn't seem to be on anyone else's radar that I've heard of. So there's a bit of a wasted pick here, too.

@a57se

Obviously, poor. Actually, a wasted pick. You make a man change meeting rooms on this level, and you wonder why he fails? Then, you waste a spot on the roster in order to hide him, but he never sees Active status & never takes a snap, leaving you a man short all year? Then, your grand experiment never makes it out of the following camp, not even on the PS??? Could Idzik not have found an actual O lineman in that spot? Or, actually, a living, breathing football player at any position to take at that draft pick?

Poor. another pick that should have been a UDFA

@a57se

Undecided. Good camp warrior; not enough game time to tell. Slauson got eaten up pretty badly on his few spot appearances if I remember, only to play much better once he started & settled in.

Poor,  Limited talent and upside...

@a57se

I'm going poor with this pick, as well. Mainly because his suckatude has an outsized impact. Other guys can just leave a hole in their particular spot on the field. He, however, drags Brick & Mangold with him, which allows for less help on the ROL side, which clogs up the running lanes, which puts more pressure on Geno, who has less time to make his reads for the split second his WRs get open while he's running for his life.

Not to say that the O's woes are all Winter's fault, but the O's woes are all Winter's fault.

So, yeah, that pick would be: Poor.

a57se
a57se

Poor. Lower level of competition where he didn't excel. Much better options available at this pick.

@a57se

No, it's not necessary, but it's now clear where you're going with this, 57… and imho, you're right.

Idzik's been ripped pretty badly for this last draft class, but has skated so far on last year's, mostly because of the Sheldon pick, along with the Incompletes on Dee & Geno. But after those 3, the cliff is pretty steep.

metjetnet

@a57se Incomplete.

57, very tricky waters here when it comes to drafting QBs. Drafting QBs is always a crapshoot.

Which scale do you use to judge a college QB? 1) Actual individual quality or 2) "the best of a weak lot" quality? Sure, 1) is easy; but 2) often gets you fired but you have to grab him.

Lots of QB-hungry teams & not enough QBs to go around. Every year, college QBs with 3rd or 4th Round or later talent are pitched as No. 1's simply because there's no one better.

Don't underestimate the power & need of the media. ESPN debating whether this draft's top QB is really a 4th or a 5th just isn't as sexy as "should he go at #3 overall or could he fall to #6?" You'll always have mediocre QB fields talked about in the same breathless terms as an actual "stable of studs" year. The media needs to sell clicks & papers, period. So they make Geno sound like Montana.

If you're a QB-strapped team, how can you tell your fan base you care if you're not thinking of grabbing the top QB you can to be the face of your franchise, even if you know he's a journeyman backup at best?

I'm not faulting Idzik on this one. You're right that Geno didn't excite those who know these things & in a perfect world, he'd go lower to a team w/ an established QB -- to sit & learn, with dreams of cracking the starting unit until replaced by a better option, becoming a journeyman backup like Kellen Clemens.

Idzik couldn't wait. By the buttfumble, the Jets needed a QB NOW -- TODAY!!! And, there was Geno. Well below where the gasbags said he'd go.

Unfortunately, it just wasn't a 5-studs-coming-out-together year.

It was a Seeds & Stems year. Odd-Lot Closeouts year.

So, with no chance at getting one of the one or two decent possibilities, and with two good talent picks already in hand, he took a shot at the next top QB he could get, at a decent value.

We've all been crossing our fingers ever since...

Poor. Was obvious on College tape he had accuracy issues and footwork issues and field vision issues.

played in a simple one read offense in college that does not translate to Pros.

@J. Smooth @williamg1 And those people shouldn't leave their homes without their handlers.

Besides, his excuse is BS. A cell phone's time will automatically adjust in each time zone. He's asking us to believe that he miscounted a time, even though the time automatically adjusts?

You want this guy QBing the team?

@a57se In terms of the pick, though, you got a consensus top-15 talent at pick 40, your third pick of the draft. Some draft picks bust. But that's tough value to pass up at a position of obvious need.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@williamg1 @a57se At the end of the year, if he's still playing this way, nobody will disagree with you. But there's no sense cutting bait now.

DarrolRayFanClub
DarrolRayFanClub

@williamg1 @J. Smooth No -- he is right. His phone adjusted the time but the Jets operate in Eastern Time Zone. That's the bing-boggling part. Whose decision is it to run their little unit in a different time zone from where you are situated?

And it's not like it would be an advantage in any way. Operating in east time meant they were playing a day game from 7:30-10pm, making you feel all discombobulated. Don't get it.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@a57se @J. Smooth He was absolutely the top rated QB in that draft. Plenty of reputable reporters (JLC and even Schefter) thought he could go top 5.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@DarrolRayFanClub @J. Smooth @williamg1 Yeah, and when he tried to adjust he probably thought "right, it's 3 hours earlier here", so he dropped three hours instead of adding them. That's it. No controversy. No division. No story.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 Hey, don't ever accuse Geno of not having good manners. He put his phone on silent, just like the previews asked.

DarrolRayFanClub
DarrolRayFanClub

@a57se @DarrolRayFanClub Jets have a tendency to do that, now with Boyd, with Sanchez's friend... and as you know, in that case they had someone in mind to give the money and prestige of being drafted to -- Bellore.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@a57se @J. Smooth Yes. It means general agreement. I'd argue most people thought Geno was a first round QB. And considering they had a huge need there, that was the pick to make, regardless of whether or not you think he's terrible or not.

@a57se Who did the team miss out on by taking him?
