Only two options if he drops to 6 - take him or trade it. I feel this is the case no matter who else is there unless it's Jameis.

As for the negative ramifications of missing on a QB early in the draft on a franchise, I say that when there's a QB available who is worthy of the pick you're at, you gotta keep trying until you hit on one, regardless of other needs on the team.

I'd rather they take him than trade him, but I'm okay with either.

@dsmizzle Agreed, I don't know.  Maybe the experts are reading something that I'm missing regarding Mariota, but I think the stuff about him not being ready due to spread is way exaggerated.

.I think he would be a great pick at 6, although I could see wisdom of trading down for a barrel of picks.

His intangibles are off the charts, He has ideal athletic ability, and he has produced at a high level. Easy pick, yes.

The only thing is that I like both White and Cooper at WR too.

I only choose high achieving players with a top ten pick.  To me, that eliminates Fowler. Beasley, maybe.  Ray, a possibility.  Schreff, a possiblity.

Just tell us when it happens. Stop with the yes or no questions.

@Brendan

I can see why but I don't agree with it. Per gangreennation:

Kevin White Advantages: Size, Hands, Acceleration & Release, Blocking Ability and Catching in Traffic.

Amari Cooper Advantages: Open Field Ability, Body Control, Speed and Route Running.

Draws: Character, Quickness & Agility

The two key advantages (for me) is Amari has more speed and is a better route runner. Not to mention his production and his ability after the catch is amazing. Don't get me wrong, Kevin White looks like the real deal, but I'd give Amari the edge.

Good - then trade him to the Eagles for a slew of 1st and 2nd round picks.

devante parker put up some nice numbers only playing in 6 games last year...if cooper winston and mariota are all gone by time we pick is parker a reach at 6?

This team has so many holes that it's impossible to project their pick. They could use two new OLBs. A remake of the secondary. It could use two new guards. A stud receiver. And the obvious need at QB. They could use anybody players being projected in the top 10. So the question now is - which of McShay's top 10 would you not be happy with?

BronsonSNY
BronsonSNY

@NeedANewGMHCQB We don't have holes. The only glaring hole is QB. There's plenty of young talent on the Jets.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

Eh, the entire secondary is a hole, the LB corp desperately needs an infusion of speed, & OL, RB, TE, & WR need improved depth.

The team also could use a punt returner & a kick returner.

@NeedANewGMHCQB

We have a stud receiver in Decker

We have Coples at OLB and Aboushi at Guard...

so it is really not as dire as you make it seem.

@hitchhiker Not to mention both Damon Harrison and Kendrick Ellis are FA's. So add DL to the mix.

@NeedANewGMHCQB Winston.  I've had enough of the circus surrounding the Jets.  His off the field issues are a real concern.

@NeedANewGMHCQB  I don't care about McShay, I hope our new scouting department and new GM and New Coach can all come together and formalize a great draft strategy and select the very best at each position without reaching for players but truly select the best player available, there is no one player that is that good at a given position that we should ignore who is the best available player. QB, after Winston is gone, all the other QB's are even to me, they all have upside and all pose some risks, I am comfortable waiting until the 3rd or 4th. WR there are many of them, Parker and Coates are really good but are in the shadow of Cooper. You cannot take a lineman at 6, might as well trade down and get you a couple of them if you like in the first round. What ever Macagnan comes up with I am comfortable with, he strikes me as a guy who knows what he's doing unlike Idzik.

is mariota falls to 6 do the eagels trade foles for the pick

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@Zach Rozales  I hope so, Foles might be what we need, and just not draft a QB at all. Hopefully the Eagles will trade their 1st rounder and Foles for our 1st and that would set us up nicely. You can select the best o lineman at that spot and keep addressing other needs in the remaining picks. Foles is young and we can afford to keep him for a while and maybe we can trade up next season in 2016 and take Hackenburg and groom him behind Foles that would be an ideal situation.

Took another shot at being Jets GM.

Cut: Hakim, Harvin, Pantale, CJ, Bohanon, Winters, Cumby, Pace, Walt Powell.    Cut Mo, Snacks and Jarrett to resign them.

Resigned: Bilal Powell, Conner, Dooz, Ellis, Bellore, Purdum.   Extend Mo 7 yrs, Snacks 4 yrs, Jarrett 2 yrs.

FA signings: Torrey Smith WR, Gresham, TE, Orlando Franklin OG, Akeem Ayers, OLB, Larry Foote ILB, Byron Maxwell CB, Chris Culliver CB, Marcus Gilchrist S, Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB

Have $28M left in cap space.

Did two drafts with different approaches based on above:

Minimal trading due to standing pat at #6:

1.  Jameis Winston QB, 2. Jaelen Strong WR, 3. Duke Johnson RB, 4. Laken Tomlinson OG, 4 (via trade down), Ramik Wilson ILB, 5. Kwon Alexander OLB, 7. Quandre Diggs

More trading w/Mariota and Winston gone by #6

1. P 11. Shaq Thompson, OLB 2.  Brett Hundley QB, 2. Jaelen Strong WR, 3. Josue Matias OG, 3. TJ Yeldon RB, 4. Cedric Ogbeuhi OT, 4. J. Heuerman TE, 5. Steve Nelson CB, 5. Jake Ryan LB, 7. Tre McBride WR

@hazard2012  Cut Mo? And expose him to free agency? I don't care how little time he'll be released for, Rex will jump on that opportunity and sign him and snacks, no matter if it meant putting that team over the cap.

@Pablo Bruno @hazard2012

It is just the way the sim works...in order to redo Mo's contract he has to be cut...no actual risk involved.

Mccagan was a NT in college. I bet Danny Shelton is high on his board. I'm really excited to see what bowels does with antonio Allen and calvin pryor

uh, no. Geno will not win. I read posts of fans with rose colored glasses based on garbage time games.  He's a bad decision maker.  Playoffs?  He's not getting us to .500,  Not in '15 or '16

Jesse DeBear

@gjet93 Mariota IS Geno Smith with 2 fewer years in a pro style offense.  I do believe Geno is the better option right now.  But neither is the long term solution.  I pass on Mariota and wait until the next season when there is a better QB class.  Why waste the #6 pick?

DRFC
DRFC

I feel like Mariota is similar to Sanchez and Geno in talent, but superior in maturity... how far that goes I don't know.

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

@DRFC I think Sanchez is the least talented of that group. Although, I'm not sure what that means... When I look at Geno, I see physical talent. No vision though.

benmoz
benmoz

@DRFC He has way more running ability then Sanchez and Geno.

lagoo

I've not been impressed by a single throw that I've seen by mariota. His highlight reel consists of him completing passes to wide open receivers. No doubt mariota is an intriguing athlete but the offense would have to be tailored to him.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@lagoo

There are some QB's (see Sanchez/Tebow) who can't even consistently complete passes to wide open receivers.....

You're right....I think the Oregon offense was nothing like an NFL offense and Mariotta is a risky pick.....

The Jets are not really in a position to pass on drafting him though if he's available. If they do and Mariotta turns into a good QB it will probably cost Maccagnan his job...

bradysucks
bradysucks

@DRFC @bradysucks @lagoo

I don't know....The Jets are DESPERATE at QB....If they pass on drafting a guy who turns into a good QB and Geno continues to struggle it will get ugly for Maccagnan...

I'm not saying it's fair....

lagoo

That's my issue with it. I have a good feeling about mccagan and bowels. I wouldn't trust rex and idiot with this decision

DRFC

@lagoo Yeah, Macc is not going all in on any QB, let alone one that the previous GM drafted

DRFC
DRFC

@bradysucks @lagoo Nah -- not taking someone won't cost him his job as long as his actual picks are good.
