Read: Mediation Wasn’t A Waste Of Time Yesterday

Last night on twitter, Aaron Ward said that the federal mediator that has been part of talks all week was brought in at the request of the NHL.

Kevin Allen wrote that if nothing else, the mediation process has allowed some of the anger and “heat” between the two sides to subside a bit.

Pierre LeBrun writes at ESPN.com that both sides told the mediator that there is a little “wiggle room” on the key issues.

John Shannon of Sportsnet writes “Mediation only works if sides feel they are close. He cannot arbitrate issues, he only creates possibilities and lines of communication”

At CBC, Elliotte Friedman writes:

The more you read about how mediators actually do their work, the more you realize how careful everyone needs to be about measuring their success. He’s not going to keep the process going if he sees no willingness to make a deal, which explains why previous attempts were such spectacular failures.

Friedman notes that the mediator isn’t allowed to reveal what one side is thinking to the other side. He adds that when the mediator asks a question the person answering doesn’t know whether the idea comes from the other side or from the mediator himself.

Darren Dreger said that the mediation process is creating enough traction to keep things moving and is painting a “general view of positivity.”

Damien Cox tweeted “People will truly buy anything. Now we’re to believe mediation, useless a few days ago, is working wonderfully. Oy.”

Chris Botta wrote that it is all well and good that mediation is reportedly going well, but at some point the two sides will need to look at each other and be in the same room.

Bruce Garrioch agreed with Botta in saying that the key will be when both sides return to the same room. He calls the situation “toxic” when both sides are together.

I have to think the front office is working on something..they've been very quiet. This new regime is interesting . In the last ten years if there was any move made there was a press conference that coincided with it. Perhaps Mac likes to let his actions do the talking

@Monty

My theory:  We're annexing the CFL.

We're just gonna take the whole league.  Claim it as our farm system.

No move they made so far was reported before it happened. I feel like we always knew what was going to happen in advance before. I like this regime a lot so far.

@a57se @tsjc68 It would be a nice signing for them.  Ellis would be a good signing for just about anyone, to be honest.

And he'd play great in a lot more snaps given the chance.   Would love to keep Ellis.  Said before, he's great depth and insurance, but I can fully appreciate his eagerness for a bigger, starting role somewhere.

Hopefully they'll let him swing for the fences...sorry we were on a horrible pun trip

Thing is, if the Jets didn't cut his reps, he'd probably be about to earn $4-5m for such a role whereas now, he'll likely only get $1-2m on a short term deal with a chance to compete for reps.

Little known fact: the world's greatest guitarist was actually named Xanthopuss McWaddledoo, not Jimi Hendrix.

He simply is unknown to the majority of the world because the record companies never gave him his chance. They said his music reminded them too vividly of brusellsprouts.

Here is some hypothetical questions for you gurus.

Say Mariotta is there, and they cannot get any decent trade (Two 1st rounders) in return  for him. If they draft him, don't you think it means they have to immediately get rid of Geno? You could not have a situation having 4 QB's in camp all vying for reps with three having a legitimate shot at the starting position. Wouldn't there be too much drama involved? Wouldn't Geno have to demand a trade? If we draft Mariotta, Geno has to know that he is not considered to have a future with the team anymore and would want to leave, staying would just cause drama and sulk on his behalf. To avoid that, hey would have to jettison him, like on Draft day, and probably get nothing in return.

That thinking is what leaves me to believe the wisest thing the Jets can do is draft one of the two WR's in round 1 and let Geno and Fitz go at it in camp, with a full complement of weapons at their disposal.

We have the D, we need points. We need to change the culture of the Jets having sucky offenses for the past 5 years. We have been starved of dynamic playmakers that can help out our average/below average QB's.

Personally I think Fitz wins the job hands down and runs with it. The dude had some great years with Chan throwing to the Scott Chandlers and Stevie Johnsons of the world. He was on a bad Texans O last year and still played somewhat well. A boost in talent plus coming back to Chan can only improve his stats. Plus look at his beard, its freakin' Fouts-like.

So what do you guys think? Am I out of my mind? Close to on point?

Crapshoot?

And no, you don't have to get rid of Geno, you can get rid of Simms instead.  And no, the "dilemma" of potentially having Geno, Fitz, Mariota and Simms together should in no way lead us to just take a WR instead to avoid potential controversy.

No.

Metanbirgeer is not the answer for them..they need another option

Marietta won't be there. The Titans need a qb badly..they are going to trade with theaters for Bradford or pick him...no way he gets to us.

I just figured I would spell everyone's name a little wrong to give people something to do..like where's wooldo

You know, they wouldn't have been forced into this Hobson's Choice between Marietta and Metanbirgeer if Jack Licker hadn't abruptly retired.

All those qbs kind of suck;) I think you keep trying to find your franchise qb until you find him .

@tsjc68 @Tooned In In theory you don't have to get rid of Simms either, I think he's still PS-eligible, with only 2 years on the PS so far? Not sure about that.

@williamg1 I like drafting Mariota and letting Geno and Fitz fight it out for the starting spot. Loser gets cut, winner starts and grooms MM.

Tooned In

@Cang @williamg1 Geno has been in the league two years. He wins the competition he will not be grooming anybody, and drafting QB in the 1st round would have been a waste.

Bent

@funkymonk @tsjc68 @Tooned In Not eligible.  He was only eligible last year under the revised rules whereby two players could be 2012 draftees that would not otherwise qualify.

@a57se @Bytor @Tooned In @tsjc68 No no no no no ricotta. More more more more mozzarella. My kids actually ask if we're putting the cheese that tastes like crap in the lasagna.

I'm gonna roll with Bytor here, I can totally get down with a lasagna with less (or no) ricotta and more mozzarella.
