Mailbag: The Rangers Chances This Season

[blackbirdpie url=”http://twitter.com/#!/Brimo1878/status/107233237423767552″%5D

Honestly, I think that the Rangers will actually meet expectations and have the kind of season that we are expecting them to. To me, that means finishing in sixth place or above, I pick sixth, and winning one round and going deep into the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated.

I think that they are gonna be better, more consistent, but that there are teams that have more experience and are better than them. I would love to be wrong and see them go to the Conference Finals or beyond, but I still a see young team that needs more experience in the playoffs. Next year might be a different story……

The Isles had a great final year in The Coliseum but they're now coming down to earth. They played way over their heads, and now all of the fans who came out from hiding are complaining and moaning. Don't blame the coaches and stop being the GM they both have done a good job in turning this once laughing stock of an organization around. Also when they beat the Rangers you have to stop acting like you won the cup, it's a long year and then the playoffs are long and tough.

End of season

1. Cappy should be gone no matter what and Cronin

2. Sign a Defenseman

3. Sign a forward to play on the top line with JT

4. Get rid of dead weight Josh Bailey, Calvin Dehaan, Brian strait, Matt Donovan, Brock Nelson all very inconsistent. Brock trade only if we get good value in return.

@David Di Gesu They just tied up 70 million and 6 years on two overrated defensemen and you fans acted like Brock Nelson was the second coming of Mike Bossy. They also let Matt Moulson get away, he had great chemistry with Tavares.

Cappy and Cronin what a pair. Cappy a glorified AHL coach turned NHL with no experience, keeps job for 6 yrs with 1 and 1/2 win seasons out of 6, then

Cronin comes from a Toronto Mapleafs coaching staff that has played bad Defense for 3 yrs.

We let Peter L go, we let Ted Nolan go, but we keep Cappy even when he can't coach this team.

Dispite the islanders bad PK and PP system they have managed to win before the all star break becs they have good players not a good coach.

PATHETIC last 10 games!!!

As someone mentioned below, and as Howie/Butch were pondering out loud, how in the hell does Crappy not get JT (or choose to put him there) away from Kesler? Isles have last change at home ugh, our coaching staff is horrendous

@tonelli27 For Christmas next season I am buying 1 book for both Cappy and Wang to read, it is called Hockey For Dummies  Redd Foxx would have called them both Dummies lol

@david butchie was saying that all game with the last change he needed to do that. Coaching 101.

@David Rosenthal It's funny, we don't even have to hear Cappy speak, but we know what he's saying. It's something dumb... like "clam chowdah!"

Don't even waste your time responding to tpjm. If we ignore him enough, maybe he'll get bored and wander away to find other people elsewhere to annoy.

@TonyM to me they're not the problem.  it's the kids that need a good talking to.

gleichzal2

cizikas scores his eighth goal of the season (big deal) they're still losing late in the third, and he celebrates like he just won a playoff series.  this team is in desperate need of veteran leadership at forward.  the kids aren't getting it done.

TonyM
TonyM

@ kevinpt                No it's not! But anyone who has followed this team could see this coming. the main problem has been the coaching! Sure the players have not responded to the challenge, but whose fault is that!  Even when the team was doing well, it was inspite of the coaching not because of it! When the camera pans to Cappy on the bench, he looks like a deer caught in the headlights! He has no clue how to turn this around! There's no doubt this team played well above their heads the first few months of the season! But a total collapse now is unacceptable.

 we are plain and simply not a good team and we dont deserve to make the playoffs playing like this and if we dont man up and win some games we are not going to get in.  so sad that this is what its come to but this is what it has come to.  I will wait til tomorrow to comment further but i am preparing my fire Garth Snow address, he had a chance to build on an unexpected hot start where it was clear from anyone looking at the underlying numbers that the team still needed help but did not have ready prospects to fill that role.

3-7-3 says it all since that Carolina game. Somebody needs to remind them to leave the collapsing to the September 2007 and 2008 Mets.

TonyM

                         With twelve games to go I said this team would go four  and eight and  everyone  ridiculed me! Well since then the Isles are 1-4-1 ! I admit I was probaly wrong, four wins were kinda of a stretch!

tonelli27
tonelli27

@ghost mitch that nearly 2 minutes of 5 on 3 was not good. Aside from a couple of anderson saves too much bsing around with the puck and no real cohesion.

tonelli27
tonelli27

@jep thats a pretty good summary and i would not call kevin polyanna however there are far more of those types on this blog. If their opinion is sincere fine, if its just propaganda then it needs to viewed as such.

kevinpt

@TonyM Is that something to be proud of though? I don't really understand it. For everyone who's predicting doom, it's like sometimes they're happy when it happens so they can say I told you so.

David Rosenthal

And Kevin we hate being right id much rather be proven wrong...thanks for asking though...but how does it feel to be so so wrong much of the time when it comes to reading this team?

kevinpt
kevinpt

@David Rosenthal Please tell me when I said the team was playing well, or was perfect, or was even a good team. I've never liked Capuano and have said many times that he's not the coach who's going to take them to the finals. I've also always said they're still a few years away from being a stanley cup contender. It's not that I don't see the faults, I just choose not to constantly complain about them. No amount of complaining is going to change anything, so I choose to just try to enjoy what has been, for the most part, a successful and enjoyable season. Stop acting like I've been saying this team is flawless and Capuano is an elite coach.

@kevinpt @David Rosenthal

Kevin, The problem is, and I do not place this on you, if some of us so called downers were to reverse our POV and begin to applaud the season as they are always pointing out to us that we are not doing,   the pollyanna's would just call us bandwagon fans, even with the collapse currently occuring, so there is no point to doing so, so we all will stick to our POV until the season ends, whether on a good note or not.

kevinpt
kevinpt

@caseysdad Well you're definitely not bandwagon fans, or else you wouldn't have stuck with the team for this long haha.

kevinpt
kevinpt

@David Rosenthal @kevinpt Look, I have nothing against you or anyone else who has more of a negative view of the team as a whole - we just look at things very differently. Personally, yes, to me the season is still successful as long as they make the playoffs and play well in the playoffs, which is still realistic in my opinion. If after last season, which was a total disappointment, you were to say the Isles would have 93 points with 8 games left to play, I think most people would sign up for that. At least I would.

caseysdad
caseysdad

@kevinpt @caseysdad

Kevin,

it is painful for me, and i suspect many others in here to watch what was shaping up as a 'magical' final season on LI and the Coli just fall apart in the last 7 weeks or so, I still maintain they will make the POs foolish or not, but the POs are a different animal, and for me it is much more then just not acheiving anything this season, at my age i just want to see a second round, and then I could 'die in peace' at this stage they probably will not win a cup before i turn my cards over for the last time. haha

kevinpt
kevinpt

@David Rosenthal @kevinpt Of course I wouldn't sign up for those things, but I try to look at the bigger picture. One thing we've learned about this team is that they're extremely inconsistent and unpredictable. They can beat the best team in the league one night and lose to the worst team the next. So the playoffs could be a total crapshoot. I'm just hoping they pull it together to win at least one round. They were successful earlier in the year in close games despite the coaching staff, it's not like they can't do that again.

@tonelli27

I keep finding myself making all the same excuses and disbilef  as the mets great collapses...looking at the up coming teams, looking at the odds ..everything... and everyday it kept coming.

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@tonelli27

that was the moment I said to myself....theyre choking..the pressure is getting to them..

tonelli27
tonelli27

@ghost that 2007 mets collapse was epic and i will remember it unfortunately until they get back in the playoffs, if the mets actually get back in the playoffs that is. Lol.

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@tonelli27

if you lived it..this feels real similar..not saying it is...but feels like it

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@ghostfritz @David Rosenthal @tonelli27 Ghost agree to a point, but also Crappy doesn't know how to adjust his structure the system stays the same no matter what the other team is doing on the other side of things ,they are clogging the lanes and know where the passes are going, they also know this team RARELY one times anything therefore no diving in front of shots and more time to block the shooting lanes, etc etc

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@tonelli27

you watch guys like jt and boychuck falling apart...man its hard to believe...and that's when u say...uh oh...

caseysdad
caseysdad

@tonelli27

Vic, they made anderson look like Pekka Rinne, but they have been accomplishing that for a few weeks

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

Kevin you failed to see the faults that most of us saw, the coach refuses or is unable to change his system to adapt to tighter hockey games the played who play poorly are not punished there is no accountability and no fear of losing, post game int is the same from crappy why is that?

caseysdad
caseysdad

@tonelli27

yes Vic i know of what you speak of here and some are antagonistic SOBs they thrive on it cant post an opposing POV without belittling people and most are their targets but if things don't pan out like they want wait and see what happens in here.

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@kevinpt @David Rosenthal A few years away from being a contender, what year in the rebuild would that be lol? You still think this season has been a success? Blowing a shot at Pres trophy, at division, at home ice, losing an over 10 point lead to 3 diff teams? having 90 pts in mid march and trending to having to settle for WC slot or even out of the playoffs? The arc of the season right now is one of disappointment and blowing opportunities where it was once potentially great..what you see as a tremendous year, most fans based on the arc of the season would view this as failure...perhaps that is how Wang was able to get away with all his BS, the bar of mediocrity is pretty low

caseysdad
caseysdad

@ghostfritz @caseysdad @tonelli27 certainly seems like it mitch while our netminders are very pedestrian out side of a few decent games in recent times Jaro has made some great saves but lets in a softie at times and lets not talk of his earlier gaffe of going behind his net thanks he hasn't domne that recently

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@kevinpt @David Rosenthal And since I knew you would say that, I said considering the arc of the season, you would sign up for the plummeting going on right now, if it meant we had 93 points with a few games left? You would sign up for blowing the presidents trophy race, division lead, home ice, double digit point leads over Rangers Pens caps? You would sign up for that? This team is not turning it around in the playoffs, the coaching staff doesn't know how to prepare the team for important and tight checking games, just ike they couldn't two years ago

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@kevinpt @David Rosenthal Kevin, this is the EXACT same thing that happened 2 years ago, we crapped out the last 2 weeks, crappy couldn't right the ship, de ja vu all over again

tonelli27
tonelli27

@david and you know David this team is better than the 2013 squad, this shouldn't be happening imo.

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@tonelli27 Correct it shouldn't be happening, but it is, and its the coaching staff who again failed to change the game plan to match up with playoff like games, they are playing loosey goosey october/nov hockey long break out passes fancy drop passes, trying to use the late winger to speed burst pass D...watch the game again, the ducks pretty much knew where the passes were going

tonelli27
tonelli27

@kevin for what its worth i said very early that this was the best islanders team since lavioletts 1st yr. I expected them to make the playoffs especially with the leddy/boychuk trades. I am however concerned that this slump is more than just breaks, fatigue, luck, etc. I think the coach has to answer for some of it especially if the team continues to go south.

tonelli27
tonelli27

@ghost i dont know if it is mitch but you can see where the team is not clicking and why.

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@caseysdad @ghostfritz @tonelli27

I know what your saying case...he hasnt let anything in that you can blame him for...but he also hasn't shut it down....taken over and said...nothing gets by today...losing streak ends today

caseysdad
caseysdad

@ghostfritz @caseysdad @tonelli27 mitch whether they need the points or not to get in the POs the more important issue is getting them headed in the right direction into the POs and perhaps beyond meaning winning more then 1 round

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@David Rosenthal @tonelli27

my biggest complaint would be ...I thought they sent a message they were taking their foot off the gas a little early....we went itno "rest mode" to soon..and it wasn't that easy to get guys going again.

ghostfritz
ghostfritz

@caseysdad @ghostfritz @tonelli27

you lose tomorrow and this thing takes on a life of its own..then you even gotta fear the losing teams we have coming...cuz losing teams with a chance to ruin a teams season will play like game 7 of the cup
