but Rex was a defensive genius couldn't Rex have thought of using Pryor for the position he probably plays best, or is Bowman a quiet genius?

I remember when Gholston was moved to pure pass rusher & many thought it would revive his OSU glory days. When a football player sucks, they just suck. Now Pryor has only been in the NFL one year so he deserves more time obviously. But moving him back to a position he prefers is not going to turn a crappy football player into Jack Tatum.

@WW85 That's a pretty bad comparison. Gholston couldn't even get on the field and Pryor showed some real promise in the preseason when he was playing his natural position.

Pryor will have a good year.

Fanspeak Mock draft I did. Thoughts??

I'm going to get right into breaking down my draft, and then go pick by pick and acknowledge the flaws and strengths.

Round 1 Pick 21 (CINN): Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

Round 1 Pick 31 (N.O.): Jake Fisher, OT/OG, Oregon

Round 2 Pick 5: Denzel Perryman, ILB/OLB, Miami (Fla.)

Round 2 Pick 15 (MIA): Breshad Perriman, WR, UCF

Round 3 Pick 21 (CINN): Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon

Round 4 Pick 5: Tyrus Thompson, OT, Oklahoma

Round 5 Pick 12 (N.O.): Anthony Harris, SS/FS, Virginia

Round 6 Pick 15 (MIA): Ryan Russell, DE, Purdue

Round 7 Pick 6: Jamarcus Nelson, WR, UAB

Round 7 Pick 9 (NYG): Zach Vigil, ILB, Utah State

Round 7 Pick 24 (ARI): Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada

Overall, the positional breakdown gives way to:

6 Offense (QB, 2WR, RB, 2OL) vs 5 Defense (DE, 2LB, CB, S)

The first thing that will jump to all of your minds is the trades. At the time, both Winston and Mariota, plus White, Beasley, and Williams were off of the board, and I felt that there was a good trade back offer on the table (NOLA's 1/13, 1/31, 5/12 for the 6th overall) so I jumped on that. Originally I was trying to get Alvin Dupree at 13, a guy I believe will be a bonefide stud, but he was drafted by the Vikings at 11 (it was a crazy draft), so I took Cincy's offer to trade down again (CIN's 1/21, 2/21, 3/21 for 1/13). I wound up drafting Melvin Gordon on 2 premises. 1: I believe he is bar none the best RB in the draft, and 2: If you can't get an elite QB, you take an elite RB. Gordon has everything you want: speed, size, strength, agility, and vision. At the second first round pick, I was a bit stumped. I wound up taking underrated Jake Fisher, who is a fantastic LT project/plug and play guy. He's huge and long, and has elite footwork. The only major complaint with the guy is that he needs to add muscle and weight, and in an NFL training room I don't presume it to be too hard.

As you look to the second round, this is where I believe I drop my haymakers. I first picked Denzel Perryman from the U. Perryman has fantastic instincts and short range speed and is versitile. Breshad Perriman is a stud WR in the making, and a guy I targeted in my trade up (MIA's 2/15 and 6/15 for the 21st pick in the 2nd and 3/6) He has fantastic ball skills, great body control, and burner speed. I was shocked to get him in the middle of the second, even if I had to trade up. Even to those who beckon a WR wasn't a big need, I feel very strongly about Perriman, and had the extra picks to burn for the trade up due to trading down in the first.

In the third, I took once first round considered Ifo Olomu. The dude was a stud in college before he got hurt last year. People will complain about the logjam at CB but you always want to draft the best players there. Olomu has short range quickness but lacks technique, especially on the jam. NFL coaches should be able to coach him up. Tyrus Thompson is an intriguing OL prospect. He is a powerful but sloppier footed OL prospect who IMO transitions to RG very nicely down the road. Harris is a S prospect from UVA. He stood out on tape while watching ACC football (I go to Pitt) and UVA has a knack for producing defensive talent.

Into the later rounds, I drafted Ryan Russell, a long physical beast from Purdue who has the physical traits but lacks the production. Hey, I guess you have to sacrifice something in the later rounds. JJ Nelson from UAB is an absolute burner with video game speed, and I traded with Arizona to get an extra 7th (ARI's 7/9 and 7/21 for 7/7) and drafted productive leader Zach Vigil at ILB and intriguing athlete prospect Cody Fajardo at QB.

@Cang It looks like you put a lot of time into this. Gordon is a beast, enough said. The first four picks are solid. but I doubt Perriman lasts to the to15th pick in the second round. I would have pulled the trigger on him at 31. I don't know much about Fisher but I quickly looked him up and he looks like an intriguing prospect. Perryman (ILB) is nother solid pick and a guy I can realistically see taking over for David Harris. I'm not high on Ifo (cb). Was Senquez Golson still on the board? I know Ifo was a projected first rounder before he got hurt, but I was never high on him. He routinely relies to heavily on help from his safety. After that the other guys are all a crap shoot (like most prospects) so i won't comment to heavily on them. Any one them can end up being a solid NFL starter. Pretty solid mock but I don't know how realistic it is with all the trades.

Why're fans crying about not taking a reciever last year.. When we could possibly be choosing between two great prospects this year at the same position.. the mess we had going on in our secondary definitely didn't help pryor one bit.. He showed some flashes and always seemed to play with an attitude aka he actually likes playing

Pat d

I liked the Pryor pick. But that doesn't 't excuse the Jets not moving up and getting a WR

Anyone else notice Dee Milllner walking into Florham Park yesterday in the video of the players returning on the Jets website?

He went from top dog to the 4th or 5th CB within months....If he is a true competitor he will come back breathing fire with something to prove....

Thinking about it is exciting were Millner to recover and come back STRONG

Joe B.
Joe B.

@bradysucks He'll most likely always have some problems physically unless he fixes his underbite.

bradysucks

Lol....

I think Millner is in pretty good shape because the Jets can afford to bring him back slowly now that he is not a guy they need to start

@bradysucks

Chances are high that Revis and Cro will collide in training camp, ending both their seasons.  It's just playing like a Jet.

Joe B.

@bradysucks I'm actually being serious I had a friend who is a great athlete, but he always got hurt. He went to a whole body dentist in CT and he told him his jaw wasn't sitting right and  causing some weakness in his shoulders which lead to weakness throughout his body. He aligned his jaw and he hasn't been hurt since.

I think it's more likely that Geno buttfumbles......then again there is only one Sanchez

Has to be terrible to work your whole life and be remembered for kissing a 300 pound giant rump.....Life really is cruel

@Joe B. @bradysucks

Did he align his jaw with a dance and chanting?  That's the only way you can fix whole-body-jaw-problems.

bradysucks

I'd imagine the Jets have examined every part of Millner as they have a top 10 pick invested in him..

Joe B.
Joe B.

@roadyhorns @Joe B. @bradysucks It's okay if you don't believe in it, but it just happens to be true. The body needs to flow properly in order for it to function at its highest level. That might not be important for someone like you or me, but for an elite athlete it's pivotal.

bonozoffa
bonozoffa

@Tooned In @bradysucks he's done? really? even w/ a veteran defensive backfield that can help teach him about the pro game - that he did not have before - and a coach who isn't talking his defense into trouble 27/7? that might be the funniest comment i've read on this blog. or dumbest. not sure.

Joe B.
Joe B.

@bradysucks I doubt the Jets doctors are even aware of of this. Unfortunately, there are unconventional practices that are not respected or understood. Acupuncture for one is slowly becoming mainstream and many athletes have reported positive  results from it. Do you remember when Jason Kid was supposed to have knee surgery a few years back but never did. That's because he went to my PT friend who does fascial massage and Kidd played the entire season and some after that without ever having to to go under the knife. Team doctors recommended surgery by the way...

I hope he contributes late and gets us a good pick in the draft

@Hanknaples @bradysucks He's a real dentist (medical school (Temple) and all) and he addresses the whole body to get at the root of problems that don't seem to be mouth related but are.

bradysucks

Don't think he is done....

But a blown Achilles is a big deal

Tooned In

@bradysucks I think Dee is done dude, as brittle as he has been, with a blown Achilles, I don't see him coming back and doing anything worthwhile for the team.

Bubby Brister

Just be wary about those whole body fillings...

Tooned In
Tooned In

@bonozoffa @Tooned In @bradysucks The veteran defensive backfield can pass along all their sage wisdom to young Dee, it won't do any good if he can't stay healthy enough to stay on the field.

Did you even read my post or did you just want to throw insults at somebody?

Forgive me the interruption & going off topic but... Where is my fellow "Houstonian" transplant? We communicated briefly on this blog some months ago. Are U catching the Jets game in H-Town this year? It should be a very good & interesting game to say the least. We are 4-1 lifetime against the Texans... I hope we're 5-1 after this seaons game! Go Jets!!!

roadyhorns

@Hector Rodriguez II

Yes, hello there Hector!  Let's go to the game together this year.  Can you buy us some tickets and I will hire a couple of escorts to go with us.

Hector Rodriguez II
Hector Rodriguez II

You must not know me... Or your an idiot homie... Either way... I think u should play nice, until you know the person, the man. I never mentioned anything about "us" going anywhere together. I asked if "you" are going to the game, if it was ,is the person I was referring to. I'm originally from Spanish Harlem homie, I go back to NYC @ least 4 times a year, my brother, a few homies & me catch a game or 2 every year in Jersey. Although they get to go to every game. I settle for D TV. Fight & fly... Go Jets!!!

roadyhorns

@Hector Rodriguez II

I'm sorry if I offended you.  I don't have to get us escorts, if you want it to be a "me-and-you-thing."  As you know, I'm really open minded and don't like to label things.  I can get us a hotel near the stadium if that's what you are worried about.

I grew up in the Taino Towers.  My homies and I grew up jumping off the 103rd Street Footbridge, swimming over to Wards Island to buy cans of food.  I don't recognize your name, though.  Are you sure you aren't fronting?

Anyway, get us the tickets to the game and we can figure everything else out from there.

@Hector Rodriguez II

I'm the guy who lives in Houston, not "roadyhorns".

No, I won't be going to Reliant for the game...

I prefer to watch on TV as I don't have the greatest eyesight!

Hopefully we kick some Texans butt that day1

@JCuratola3 Come on now. You already tried to put words in my mouth I didn't say, don't do the passive thing where you allude to my comments without directly addressing them.

You're fighting a strawman with a comment like this.

Brendan

@Marvel Yes, he had 15.

And to put that in perspective, that ranked him fifteenth for his position

Safeties miss tons of tackles, it looks like.

Out of 60 plus safeties tho..

@Brendan @Marvel

I always felt the majority of those were due to poor positioning (usually overpursuing) rather than poor tackling technique per se.

Almost rather it be the other way around.

I like this thought.  Revis can help Pryor in the same way Reed helped Milliner despite the fact neither played the same position.

Hector Rodriguez II
Hector Rodriguez II

He was a rookie last year (not making excuses), playing a position he wasn't used to playing. under Bowles, plus with experience, he should be improved. Besides... He wasn't drafted by this administration & we have other, decent & interesting options @ that position. If Bowles is who I think he is... He will play the best.... Do what is best for the team. We can only hope. But either way, it's too early one way or another. Go Jets!!!

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel I'd think you can teach a guy to stop overrunning easier than you can fix a guys terrible tackling form at that stage in his career.

I believe that bringing back Revis & Cro will help our young DB's immensely... especially in the classroom, which in turn will aid greatly on the field. Jets Fly & Fight!! Go Jets!!!

idothis2

@Bentk i think helping with positioning is where revis can really help pryor much like what reed wouldve done last year if the Jets wouldve brought him back. they would tell pryor where to be and what to look for presnap based on formation and trust what he sees. still not sure why reed wasnt brought back to aid the young secondary

@Marvel

I think Pryor may have trouble beating out Antonio Allen for the strong safety role.
