Hey, some of you don't get it.  Sorry for the tone, but whatever. If the Jets scouts think Mariota is that good, then they will make an effort to trade up, and frankly, if they don't they're stupid. This assumes that they think he's a future franchise player.

Alternately, if they think he has lots potential but some serious question marks, then they'll either role the dice at 6 (ie pick him) or possibly trade out of that slot especially if they covet another qb in rounds 2 or 3 like Hundley, Grayson, or Petty.

It's a QB driven league.  We will draft a QB, and he probably will be drafted in the first three rounds.  Bowles and Macc can't be thrilled with what they have. Fitz is a question mark until he steps on the field, stays healthy, and performs in Chan's offense, again.  If you think Fitz isn't a question mark, you're not paying attention. He has done very little in his career to warrant unwarranted faith in him.

Geno is a bigger question mark.  Need I say more...

No team wants question marks at QB.

When Tannenbaum made the trade up to get Sanchez it was a sound gamble because his scouts told him--"this guy is going to be a franchise qb." When your scouts tell you that, you pull the trigger on a qb even if it means trading picks.  (Hindsight being what it is, Tanny wasn't a horrible GM.  Mac is better though, and he will surprise some "experts" here when he doesn't take an edge rusher with the first pick.)

Otherwise, you don't understand what it takes to win in this league.  It isn't complicated.

You think an edge rusher is more valuable than a potential franchise QB,  That's a gassser.

You think Amari Cooper is more valuable than a franchise qb, please cue laugh track.

 Tell that to Bill Belicheck or Sean Payton.

@nesboogie Unnecessary move, but Macc is trying to stack the roster with 2-3 deep talent.

That said, my problem with Ridley.  He has good skills yet the Patriots kept finding ways to not give him the ball.  What's up with that?

I wouldn't mind Cooper you can never have too many WR's

bradysucks
bradysucks

Especially if you're the Jets and at least one of your starting WR's has missed significant playing time every year since 2011 and your passing offense has been ranked 30th or worse in the NFL the past 3 consecutive years !!!

Case closed

bradysucks
bradysucks

I like Beasley - he'd be a solid pick but I think the Jets WR's need another playmaker badly. Marshall, Kerley, & Decker all got injured last year.

Think of it like this - if Marshall gets injured again and Decker & Kerley are your starters you are in trouble.... Cooper is a legit number one WR prospect as is White. Jets can't afford to pass that up

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

@Kyle Ely If MM is off the board and It's Cooper or Fowler, Beasley at 6, who do you grab?

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

@bradysucks I would take Beasley because I think our WR corp is pretty solid now.  We have a true 1st, 2nd and slot.  WE have a good TE and and many young prospects in training already.  The draft will certainly bring us a Washington type scatback to round out the whole offensive picture.  I think Cooper would be overkill and Beasley would be the future pass rusher we have been missing.  If MM isn't there at 6  I like Beasley.

Just because Fowler had a bad game against Collins/LSU doesn't mean he's going to be road kill in the NFL.  Besides, if he or Beasley are drafted he's they're likely to play in the Pace role, on the other side.  QC will still go against the LT.

We've had an elite secondary before and that did not result in our DL being dominant.   We've needed an game-changing edge rusher for years, and Pace needs to be replaced.   Time to do it is now.

@bradysucks Wow! Injury bug paranoia...I feel you!  Coop hugh?  Ok, so how did the vist go?  Are they eatin' dinner over at Steve's Sizzlin'?

@bradysucks

Stop with the injury epidemic!     What if Nick, Brick, Mo or Shel goes down (bite my fingers for typing that!!!)?   Do you plan your drafts solely on the theory of replacing the players most likely to be injured?

Very flawed reasoning.     It doesn't work that way.

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

@hazard2012 @bradysucks True, but I do feel his paranoia.  I still think we're sound in theWR corp once we draft our scatback.  Fowler or Beasley are the ones.

Mangold has had no durability issues and the o-line has been relatively healthy for years. Same with the d-line

The Jets a WR's have been banged up for years and Marshall was badly injured last year. You need to face reality

hazard2012
hazard2012

@jetsjerk @hazard2012 @bradysucks

Totally agree.   We need receivers, need another back, need OL, but none of the above in round one.    Get the edge rusher and make the D elite when you can.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@bradysucks

You need to face reality.  Injury is one play away for every player in the league, and you can't build a team based on replacing guys you feel might get injured.    You build depth, but you're usually not in a position to build redundancy.   Too expensive.

Again, and for the last time...let's show we can make use of one #1 WR before we use a first round pick to get another.   Cooper's nice, I like him.   I think he's a safe pick, high floor, but also possibly the lowest ceiling of the top receivers.   I'd love to have any of them.

But I'd loved to have an edge rusher more.   More immediate impact, for reasons I've already stated.

We've been at this all day, going in circles.   Surely there's something else to discuss.

I Will be happy when the draft is OVER...because you're right we debate it to DEATH

I hope you get your edge rusher......I still prefer a WR or QB with the 6th  pick

Beasley is the best guy on the edge ....great speed and strength

@bradysucks @hazard2012 My biggest knock on Beasley is actually that he doesn't seem to use that strength too well.  He's a bit of a one trick pony at the moment.

Cooper

No hesitation and no regrets

Fowler was manhandled by L'ael Collins which to me means most NFL left tackles will take his lunch. Beasley is not as good as Cooper

The Jets can apply pressure to the QB now that they have an elite secondary

I have zero doubt that Coples, Pace, Babin, Davis etc can terrorize the QB

richtodd
richtodd

@hazard2012 @bradysucks No offense, but this stuff about Cooper having the lowest ceiling of the top WR's is garbage.

People said similar things about Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison. People are getting overly enamored with Kevin White's workout numbers and I like White too.

Cooper will be an excellent pro.

Tannenbaum was okay - Not the brightest football guy - but he was very aggressive when it came to going after PROVEN talent. Compared to Idzik he was terrific.

Macaggnan seems to be the best of both worlds - He aggressively went after proven players to upgrade the roster and it appears he can also identify talent without having to lean on his coaches to guide him. Idzik obviously was the worst of everything - introverted/secretive/unaggresive/cheap & clueless

Pretty sure TJB will self destruct before the draft gets here. You guys are crazy lol.

Jokes aside there were some good arguments for WR vs Edge rusher at 6. Lots of great points. Very insightful stuff. Marcus , tsjc, Brendan , Smooth, everyone . And I'm still on the fence lol.

Between Coples, Babin, Wilk, IK, Sheldon the guy we pick mid draft , I think the pass rush will be fine. The improved secondary will also help.

I really do almost hope those guys get their edge rusher.......ALMOST being the key word....

WR would make the team better....

When given the choice between helping a welfare offense with no depth among playmakers who spent much of last year injured and a defense already loaded with talent the decision is EASY for those of us who can SEE

hazard2012

Not sure I'be heard a good argument for picking WR over edge rusher in the first round.    Actually, more to the contrary, but it does gt stale repeating the same points over and over again.   .

bradysucks
bradysucks

@hazard2012 @Marvel

What makes you so sure the Jets can't already create pressure from the edge with Coples or Pace?

The reality is that Idzik was an incompetent imbecile of EPIC proportion who handicapped Rex Ryan......Now that the Jets can play man to man coverage they can unleash the pass rush and they haven't been able to do this since Revis left....

None of us (NONE OF US) have seen our d-line play with an elite secondary that actually locks up the other teams WR's......I think they are plenty capable of applying pressure on the QB now that the secondary has been upgraded

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Marvel

At least one Jets starting WR has gotten injured and missed playing time EVERY year since 2011......

An edge rusher doesn't change that

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Marvel

There is no doubt about it....

These guys think they NEED an edge rusher when they have yet to even see what our pass rush looks like with an elite secondary playing behind it.....

It is borderline absurd......but let them dream of adding another luxury car to their garage even though the garage is already full of luxury cars....

Another offensive weapon on the other hand would make a NOTICEABLE difference and provide depth at WR which has been an injury prone position for the Jets since 2011

Marvel
Marvel

Again . No need to even go that route. If I were you I'd just take the BPA angle. It's argument proof

Marvel
Marvel

Honestly both would make a difference (rusher/WR)

The angle that needs to be taken, the one that can't be disputed or should I say the one that even your biggest detractors can't fault you would be BPA.

TJB rule #1 ... BPA

TJB rule #2 ... Change the definition of crapshoot to fit the days angle.. (Jk jk jk)

But seriously if you feel Cooper is the BPA , that's the play. Simple

I feel he's the BPA. I watched Beasley vs FSU yesterday and at times I saw him get handled, at times he shined and I'll admit I waivered but at the moment I still feel Coop will be the BPA.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@bradysucks @hazard2012 @Marvel

They had Coples, Pace and Babin last year and it didn't provide nearly the kind of pressure and disruption needed to dominate and take control of games at critical periods.

Yes, the improved secondary will help the front line a great deal, but why not take it up a notch, to a level opposing offenses simply cannot deal with?  Pace needs to be replaced, and this is the perfect year in which to do it.    Adding a quality edge rusher will take the D to elite level...

...adding Cooper or White will not accomplish the same for the O and, what's more, will not be a marked improvement over say a receiver we pick in later rounds.    We need to add a receiver, yes, but not necessarily in the first round.

And I continue to say that a RB who can catch will have a greater impact on the O this year than Cooper or White will.  We don't need a second #1 receiver just yet, we need a speed WR who can help us tap the proven talent of the #1 WR we already have.

Marvel
Marvel

Cooper has speed tho.

And you're assuming your edge rusher won't get pancaked and stink against the run.

Not sure why you threw in the RB part. We can and will get that regardless of who we take at 6.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Beasley or a Fowler or Ray or Gregory would be a waste with the 6th pick

The Jets are already loaded on defense

Good teams are strong on both sides of the ball....the Jets have no excuse not grabbing Cooper or White if those guys are there at pick number 6.....same with Mariota

The rules in the NFL no longer favor defense

If you don't believe me look at the score of the most recent Super Bowl. The winning team scored 28 points against a defense loaded with edge rushers

bradysucks
bradysucks

Last I checked an edge rusher can't score points and that is something the Jets haven't been able to do for years....

BPA would be White or Cooper versus any of the edge rushers in this draft

hazard2012
hazard2012

@Marvel

My reasoning for throwing in the RB part is simple: I said that adding a RB who can catch is a greater need of and benefit to the offense than adding a receiver....and yet no one is advocating we draft a RB in round one...(except Brian Baldinger).

It's relative.   We're deeper at WR than we are at RB, and that may warrant being addressed first.   And in adding someone like David Johnson, Duke Johnson, Coleman, Ajayi, Buck Allen, etc. you effectively add another potential receiver.

Add that to fact we already have a #1 WR in Marshall, #2 in Decker, #3 slot in Kerley, a TE who is also more receiver than traditional TE and I question whether there's a need for a second top WR.

How often is Chan likely to pass with QB's named Fitzpatrick and Smith?     How many catches will Cooper or White likely make in this O this year?  How many more balls will be thrown their way and will they catch then will say a Dorsett, Hardy, McBride, etc?

Hardly anything worth the difference between a first and a 3-4th round pick.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@bradysucks

You want to reconsider the fact that edge rushers can't score points, or make plays that directly lead to points being scored?

Marvel
Marvel

Yea it's the dull part of the off season tho, it's expected. I usually disspear for a lil while but with the new regime and the high pick it's just enough excitement to come back daily.

Personally I think Cooper is the safest pick (and the BPA) and he will be a great pro. Can handle the load when Decker pulls that hammy.

hansumjay
hansumjay

Cooper practicing against Revis will make him elite!
