Owners can call these events "games" until the cows come home, but they're still full-speed scrimmages. Scores are immaterial. The only point to it is the evaluation of players fighting for spots. As Bent notes above, the object is to get enough tape on a guy in order to make some kind of evaluation, pro or con. There are other ways to do this.

I'd rather have Mo signed and in the fold, than have the money in the bank to use  for three re-treads having been on 4 teams each and in the league for years as "almost journeymen".

@a57se

The option immediately on the table is re-signing a super star.  Each team will be re-loading monies for free agents, trades, and the draft.    Look at the monies the Jets as our vested example of the millions we wasted in our history.   Just in recent history,and I'll be short of lots of players. The millions spent on Gholston.   Ok, the new CBA is no longer rookie-heavy, while Coples is not a bust, but not yet  a proven commodity. Geno cost the team against the cap some millions,  The jury (giving a benefti of the doubt) is still out on Pryor.   The list goes on for just about every team.

@Lloyd Jay Reife @a57se

Geno's contract is actually for $5m over four years you may be surprised to learn.

Also, Coples' production has been great value for a guy earning barely over $2m a year.  You'd struggle to get equivalent production from a veteran earning three times that much.

Where the Jets have really wasted money in recent years is on guys like Tebow, Harvin, Vick and Johnson.  That's like $17m right there - enough to pay Wilkerson more than one year's salary!

Yup, Rex liked the name guys that didn't necessarily have the ability anymore...Plaxico Buress and Derrick Mason as well.

If he had focused a little more on developing the young guys on the roster, maybe they wouldn't have needed the ageing ex-stars.

@a57se @Bent @Lloyd Jay Reife

Burress was decent value to be fair.

$3m for 45-612-8TD and helped the Jets to 8-5 and what should have been a playoff berth.

The names I picked contributed pretty much nothing on teams that did nothing.

The 8TD's were good but he couldn't get open to save his life between the 20's...he wasn't a bad gamble considering what we had and the final 8 restrictions we were under as well as the cap situation at the time...

Agreed. I did say I'd list a "Cliff's Notes" list of players costing millions over their cost-efficiency.  I did mention Coples cannot be judged too harshly, yet there were some hiccups in some plays to be expected I guess.

Maybe he could get open and Sanchez wasn't finding him.  No all-22 film in those days so I couldn't say.

I thought his bigger problem was no YAC.  Kept going to ground to make routine catches.

Granted it was a short view, but I thought the OL looked good, Fitz looked comfortable especially in the pass to Marshall and Ivory was in beast mode. Can't focus on negatives in D right now. Hope Wilk is in next game. Big fan of coach Bowles

Cordell C

Your right the offense looked solid. When geno comes back the offense will probably be more explosive. Marshall was a big pick up he's going to take the offense to another level.

jetsjerk

@Jerry Colfer Actually, the D seconday wasn't that good at all.  Especially safety and CB.  McDougle wasn't that good and I'm concerned about Cro, and the safeties to tell you the truth.  Lets see what we do with the Falcons.

The jets defense Thursday night surprised me. I hope they shape up during the season. I don't think Williams is ready. Losing Sheldon is going to be huge. They better hurry up and extend Mo. Btw Ameer looks likes he's the real deal.

Hey Bent, when doing your BGA what did you think of Salas? Is he the one that got away or was the D to blame? He had a good game.

Bent

@levi

I've always thought Salas is an underrated player.  Even before he was a Jet.  It didn't surprise me to see him do so well and it doesn't entirely concern me that he beat our backups a couple of times as much as it would with any other backup who I might not rate as highly.

@Bent  I was kinda happy to see him do well but wish it was against the Pats or someone else.

 By unpopular request, my post from the other thread:

Has there been any discussion on these Rex comments where he says he "100% knew he was a goner before the 2014 season"?

He's got to be exaggerating there, surely?

Are we really led to believe that every optimistic comment he made about the team's chances was basically a lie?

When everyone mobbed him in the locker room after Woody announced he was returning, he knew it was as a dead duck?

The Harvin trade which some players actually thought might resurrect their season was nothing but a desperate attempt by Idzik to save himself ... but then Rex signs Harvin with his new team?

He was happy to sign a contract extension that left open the possibility he'd be gone?

If these comments are 100% true that's such a dumb situation from so many people's perspectives.  Misleading players about their futures.  Signing free agents without them being aware of the future.  A coaching staff which seemed to underperform all year (you'll recall Josh Thomas blasting them for making no effort with him), yet ends up getting hired almost in its entirety by Rex in his next job.  The Jets being happy to enter the 2014 season while planning to shake things up after the season ... and then seemingly having no plan for the next regime after the season.

I get that Idzik was presumably part of the future until things went so badly that they couldn't justify keeping him either because things went so badly.  But what did you expect if the coach's heart wasn't in it because he was on his way out?

Nah, I think Rex is just making excuses for himself right now.  He didn't believe that at the time, even if he's convinced his gullible self that it's the case.  No way.

@Bent  I do believe him when he said he knew the team wasnt going to be very good when Idzik did nothing in FAcy. I also think somewhere along the line he knew he was a goner, not sure when that was though.

@hanknaples @Brendan In all seriousness. The weight loss is pretty amazing and Rex looks 10 years younger. He probably added 10 good years to his life which is smart when you are making 5 mill per year.

I think he probably could see the writing on the wall, but to say he was 100% sure seems a bit much. If the team had performed, he would have stayed.

That team wasn't destined for 4-12. They looked like another 8-8 team but they drastically underachieved.

BDarc23

@Bent Bent- He says before the 2014 season. Maybe it was after the mob scene and after the offseason when he realized the roster was crap and that Idzik wasn't willing to get Revis or sign Reed or get any CBs etc. It might just be based on conversations with Idzik.

Agreed but lets not forget it was NOT his discipline or willpower....It was due to the insertion of an inflatable, flexible inner tube (band) placed inside his spare tire.

Fair comment.

However...he says "100% sure".  Think about that.

It had to be a gradual realization on his part to get to 100% sure because if he was predicting success and showing swagger one minute and then realized the next he was 100% gone, that shows a mind-boggling lack of foresight.

I give him more credit than that.  So, if it was a gradual realization, then he must have started to have some suspicions as the events I mentioned above unfolded.

williamg1

@Bent @BDarc23 "100% sure" is just Rex-speak.

With that having been said, he knew he had to make the playoffs to keep his job, but when he was handed crap in FA (although there was a ton of cap space) he probably felt they didn't have enough talent to make a playoff push. Thus: he'll be fired.

Politely disagree. Most people overeat for a variety of reasons,least likely due to hunger. It could be boredom, insecurity, comfort, and basically for some emotional problem(s).

Also Rex, as you can see from his brother and father inherited a large bone structure.
