5:18PM: Bob McKenzie writes that the biggest questions surrounding the Rangers are whether Mark Messier is ready/wants to become a coach and if he does, is Glen Sather interested in hiring him to replace John Tortorella.
11:58AM: In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that Glen Sather will seek a new coach that can bring a fresh approach to the position of head coach, “the Blueshirts require an individual with a constructive, positive voice who will maximize the team’s talent.”
Brooks lists the following people as possible candidates for the Rangers head coaching position, Mark Messier, Dallas Eakins, Lindy Ruff, Alain Vigneault, Dave Tippett, Paul Maurice and Mike Keenan.
On Messier, Brooks writes that he would bring a fresh dynamic and philosophy to the team, an attacking style and a possible coaching staff that would include Adam Graves and Brian Leetch. Brooks also wonders if Messier’s lack of experience will eliminate him from serious consideration.
This morning on TSN Radio, Darren Dreger made these comments:
- “Alain Vigneualt would love that job. He had good success with the Canucks, you need to win a Stanley Cup to be considered great. He would be a good fit.”
- “Lindy Ruff I am not so sure. New York saw him coach the Buffalo Sabres for many, many years. Would I be surprised if he got it though? No.”
- “Mark Messier’s name is interesting. If he is ready to be an NHL coach he will be in the mix and I believe that he is in the mix.”
