Adam’s Thoughts:

  • Penalties and bad changes hurt the Rangers in this game, but those issues will be figured out in the coming games. Working out those kinks is why they have preseason games.
  • I thought tonight was a good showing of what Rick Nash can bring to the lineup. He didn’t score, and they didn’t dominate offensively, but he went to the net, used his heavy shot and protected the puck well. He looked engaged and was more than willing to attempt to block shots when he was out on the PK.
  • It’s tough to read into tonight because it’s the first game and they are coming off a six-day training camp with no preseason games.

So what do we think Collins to the Saints?

The Jets will have 6.2m in cap space after the rookies are signed.

We could be starting the season vs McCown. That sounds good to me!

@UncleJoe Either him or Johnny Manziel. Either way, good times.

@Brendan  Please let it be Jonny Please let it be Jonny Please let it be Jonny.

@UncleJoe Yes, I am aware. That implies that they haven't decided yet and it can still be either one.

@levi McCown is worse than Geno, so either way, goooood luck buddy.

@Brendan @UncleJoe True, but I am leaning big to McCown. Johnny looked lost last season. I know things can change, but McCown is a decent Vet, who did produce. Johnny still has a long way to go.

@UncleJoe Either way, the Jets are facing a crappy QB in Week 1.

@Brendan  I just want to see our D line get after Jonny.

Most scouts say Mauldin ceiling will be an average starter, but for a 3rd rounder, that is not bad, if that is the case.

Just watched Mauldin for the first time... Only one game so far, but... I'm not super hopeful.

@Bent @Marcus Armstrong Basically my takeaway was that he has good awareness, a nice rip move/some decent hand work, but is a limited athlete, and in the NFL, I could see his projection being problematic because of it..

Okay, well that was one of his better games in terms of +/- but not necessarily in terms of production.

His best games were weeks 3-5, although he was also really productive as a pass rusher in the Clemson game.

Watch the Miami game...he's solid against the run, and gets penetration.   Good pursuit, and is disruptive.   He doesn't have a go-to power or speed move on the edge, and doesn't explode off the snap...can be a little late in that regard at times...but he seems to have a nice sense of what's going on around him and a pretty good nose for the action.

In terms of his limited athleticism, his numbers are only just shy of Pace's numbers when he was drafted and, of course, Pace has handled the role fine in recent years, despite the fact he's presumably lost a step.

I want to see him handle the basics of setting the edge and dropping into coverage assignments.  Immediate flashy plays and production are secondary to that with the line-up we have.

@Bent @Marcus Armstrong Fair enough. For that role, he might be the right guy. Though his biggest negative for me in that Kentucky game was a play where he gave up outside contain (which then lead to a 40+ yard run).

I can imagine the media will portray him as a pass rusher and he'll be badged as a disappointment even if he does a solid job against the run because they'll look solely at his pass rush numbers.

Then again he was very productive as a pass rusher in college, so it will be interesting.  Maybe he could get some reps as a DPR as well as competing to take over from Pace?

@Marcus Armstrong I was really hoping for Diggy, but maybe they didn't see him as the type of guy who can do the stuff that Pace's role requires?

@Marcus Armstrong He seems solid, but unspectacular. Pretty sound fundamentally, but not that explosive or athletic.

Brendan

@a57se Diggy's a longer athlete than Mauldin, though.

Say the Jets take the cheapest way out with Wilks with the FT, but isn't that around 14 big ones?

Maybe  a little under.   $16MM is JJ Watt money, and Wilk's not going to get that.  No one is.  But something just below that is probably what it's going to take.
