Read: Getting That NY Winter Classic

In Newsday, Neil Best spoke with John Collins of the NHL who said that the Winter Classic won’t likely come to New York until 2014 at the earliest.

He says that Met Life stadium is an option, but with both the Jets and the Giants playing there, it is doubtful that the stadium will have enough time to accommodate building a rink.

Best says that Yankee Stadium is the preferred venue to hold the Winter Classic which will become available after 2013.

The 2014 Winter Classic will be the Rangers  and the Bruins at Yankee Stadium and if I could put some money on that I would. Best notes that NBC wanted Rangers and Bruins at the old Stadium and that match up makes the most sense, especially at Yankee Stadium. It will be two years for the Rangers and four for the Bruins. I bet Detroit and Washington hold the ones in between and the Rangers return, with brown pants, for the 2014 game and more 24/7.

CAN EVERYONE STOP REFERRING TO LAMARCUS AS THE BEST PF IN THE LEAGUE.. AD > LA

Seriously, is anyone proof reading these articles?  Spelling and grammatical errors on pretty much every other post.  It's getting a little ridiculous.  I miss Tommy D

knicks telling him they only want him for center like they have every other pos locked in with allstar

His position is not what need. Knicks need back up center and combo guard

First of all "so long Ndor" we hardly knew ya! He is off to Dallas & we may regret that.

As for the fantasy land rants about LA he was never going to turn down the spurs! Phil was honest with him & decided not to waste his time chasing a player already practically signed sealed & delivered to the spurs. Instead of hanging this around Phils neck like he made an error please tell me what you would of said to LA to make him pick the Knicks over the spurs?

knicks2016
knicks2016

@blackwood1

I agree he would have probably signed with the Spurs anyways.  But, I wouldn't have cancel the meeting because he doesn't want to play center!!  That is the dumbest reason to cancel a meeting with the current best NBA PF.

Ahhh..please reframe from using best PF in da game while TheBrow is in the building

The NBA is a players league.  I think Phil forgets that Jordan, Kobe, Shaq and Pippen had more to do with his 11 championships than him!!  Melo and Aldridge plus two first round pick this year would have made us a top 3-4 team in the east.  We would could have filled out our roster with a bunch of vet min contracts and good NBA players.  Then next year, it would have been easier to add a Durant to play with Melo and Aldridge!!

You don't tell the best PF in the league that you want him to play center or else, we don't need to meet again...SMFH at Phil's dumbness!!

PLAYERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!

knicks2016
knicks2016

Only a fool tells the best player at his position, that you need to play at another spot or we won't meet with you...really genius!!   I guess he would tell CP3 to play SG or else, we are cancelling our meeting!!  Or he doesn't want a great player, because he doesn't fit the triangle.

Pat Riley will change his system to fit players and not the other way around!!  It is a players league!  You win because of good players and you loose with bad players.

How many championship or good teams has the triangle system produce without Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Pippen on the team???  I will be waiting  for a smart answer...

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016

how many championships has Aldridge won? Aldridge is no Jordan, Kobe, Shaq or Pippen and especially not Lebron. You make lots of assumption like Aldridge would had signed if PF was offered. Aldridge didn't leave a good team to sign with a bad team. I doubt Aldridge would had signed with the Knicks over Spurs and I doubt Durant would sign with the Knicks over OKC or Washington. Heck, Monroe picked Bucks over NY. Not because of Phil but because there was nothing the Knicks could offer that the Bucks couldn't. He simply went to a better more playoff ready team. Once the Knicks start winning, it would be easier to sign the likes of Aldridge.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@uliar @knicks2016

Aldridge is the best PF in the NBA...that player should fit your system at PF...period!!  You tweak your system to fit the best players!!!  Riley and Popovich does this...why not Phil??

You don't cancel a meeting with the best PF because you want him to play center.  I don't care, if he would have signed with us or not.  We don't walk away from the best player at his position...you let him say no, he doesn't want to join the Knicks!!

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar Riley doesn't do that. he doesn't coach. building a team is like building a puzzle. players have to fit. It doesn't matter if you are the best at your position if you don't fit in the puzzle. The best Center didn't win the championship. The best Forward didn't win the Championship. The best only wins with fantasy sports owners. despite Lebron, teams win championships. you still need a team. there are no other Jordans or Lebrons in the league. Aldridge isn't even close.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@uliar @knicks2016

Riley did it.  He changed his coaching style to win championships with the Lakers and Miami, as the coach.  He also advance to an NBA finals with the Knicks with a completely different style from how he coached the Lakers.

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar

Without Magic, Lebron, Shaq and Wade, how many championship you think he wins? You say Phil only won because of Jordan, Pippen, Shaq and Kobe (I don't disagree) but how is that different from Pat's hall of fame loaded teams.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@uliar @knicks2016

That is my point...Riley knows that players win championships.  Therefore, he adjust his system to fit players.  Phil wants to find the right players to fit his system.  That is a big difference!!!

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar

At the end of the day, Phil nor Pat got Aldridge. Pat was lucky to have Lebron fall on his lap. he didn't have to gut the team and tank like Donnie did for a chance to get Lebron. I'm sure Phil wouldn't say no to Lebron.

As far as players win championships, its the reason Phil went to LA. It's the reason why he said Kerr made the right call to go to GS. so yes Phil knows players win championships. It's the reason Phil said Knicks was clumsily put together.

James Cunningham

@knicks2016 @uliar Bosh was asked by Riley to play center for Miami.Bosh brought opposing centers out to the free throw line ,opening up the middle .So some power forwards will adjust their game ,to increase chance of getting a championship ring.

@knicks2016 Riley asked Bosh to play center for Miami.He brought opposing centers out to the free throw line,opening the middle.Bosh sacrificed playing his original position,power forward,in order to get a championship ring.Riley does whatever it takes to win,to get a ring.

Alan Hahn said this about the whole Aldridge situation weeks ago by the way....

PeteyWheatstraw
PeteyWheatstraw

Props to Al Horford who plays center and is a natural PF. The game has changed there aren't that many post up bigs in the league so I don't understand Aldridge being a beeyatch about playing center.

Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett had a legit excuse not to want to play center and his name is Shaq.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@PeteyWheatstraw

He is not being a beeyatch!!!  He had several teams that wanted to sign him.  Therefore, he has the right to choose where to go.  He is not a rookie where the team that drafts him, determine his future.  With that said, Phil is a fool for trying to force an establish player with many option to play center...period!!  Instead, you find a way to fit him into your team at his natural position!!

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @PeteyWheatstraw

Aldridge had a right to go to whatever team he wants. Just like Phil had the right to only offer the center role. Phil didn't force anything. He had an offer and Aldridge didn't like it. move on. Phil needs players that fit a certain role. Aldridge not wanting to play center didn't fit the role. The blame game is stupid. there is on one to blame. Aldridge is in a better situation. how is that Phil's fault. There was no guarantee Aldridge would sign if PF was offered. I'm not hating Aldridge but if he refused to go to center at one point where it was needed, it would create a big distraction that the media wouldn't forgive. why offer a max contract for someone who doesn't fit the need which was Center. In a way I'm happy Aldridge said no. If he signed, expectation would had been to high for a team without a bench.

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar @PeteyWheatstraw

Again, nobody was forced. It was offered not forced. Phil didn't want a PF. He wanted a Center. Aldridge didn't fit and therefor the meeting was canceled.  Move on. What was the great Pat Riley offer for Aldridge? Did he force Aldridge too? How great is Pat without Lebron playing coach, GM, PG and Forward.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@uliar @knicks2016 @PeteyWheatstraw

Riley would have done whatever it takes to sign the best PF.  He tried to sign Aldrdge, even with Bosh on the Heat already.

When Riley came to NY, he was a run and gun/showtime coach,  He change his sytem to accomodate the players he had and took them to the NBA finals.

Phil is incapable of utilizing players skills, they have to be a specific type of player.  Great coaches adapt to players skill set.  Riley is a great coach/GM.

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar @PeteyWheatstraw

he tried to sign Aldridge....how that worked out? Pat changed the Knicks then quit on them. Pat isn't utilizing his players as he isn't coaching them. He hired a coach who was lost without Lebron calling plays last yr. Phil isn't utilizing his players as Derek Fisher was hired to do that. Phil doesn't even disrupt practice since that isn't his job. His job is to get players he thinks will fit a certain role. A role that Aldridge didn't fit. Aldridge obviously didn't think he fit in the great Pat Riley system.

Pat trying to sign Aldridge means he knows that Bosh deal was bad.

knicks2016
knicks2016

@uliar @knicks2016 @PeteyWheatstraw

"Pat changed the Knicks"

Wrong...Pat change his coaching style/system to fit a half court system to fit the players he had on the Knciks.  Phil is incapable of changing anything to fit the best available players.

Pat believes to change his coaching style to fit players.  Phil wants to change players to fit his system.

Pat has won championships and been to NBA finals playing multiple styles.  Popovich as adjusting his system to win championship.  why can't Phil do that???

How can the best player at his position (Aldridge) in the NBA, not fit in Phil system at his natural position of PF?  That tells me something is not great about your system...period!!   It tells me that Jordan, Kobe, etc made your system great!!!

uliar
uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar @PeteyWheatstraw

Pat isn't coaching neither is Phil. the best player at his position didn't win a championship nor has he ever came close. If he couldn't win in Portland, what makes you think he was going to win in NY with Melo and a bunch of low potential players. What makes you think Aldridge would had signed with NY rather then his hometown championship ready Spurs.

uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar @PeteyWheatstraw

Kevin Durant is the best Small Forward yet you want to force him to play SG. I bet he would cancel your meeting.

uliar

@knicks2016 @uliar @PeteyWheatstraw

Winning games increases our chance of getting Durant. Winning more games then OKC and Washington would increase our chance of getting Durant. Tell me how you play Melo, Durant and Aldridge on the same team. Aldridge would definitely have to play Center to make that work.

@knicks2016 dude Phil doesn't want to change players to fit his system.. he simply wants to find those who fit it best. Someone has already commented - Phil made an offer; LA went to the spurs. Pretty simple honestly

knicks2016
knicks2016

Sergio Rodriquez, ex knicks PG, is the player we should try to sign.  Sergio can get to the hole and create offense.  He is a good PG and trying to return to the NBA.  He is a 6'3 PG and has a good first step.

knicks2016
knicks2016

I doubt Aldrdge would have come no matter what position we told him he would play!!

Our bigger problem is lacking PG who can create shots for the team, after breaking down defenses and getting into the paint.

This triangle offensive system has never worked without a great penetrating guard like Jordan or Kobe.  With Calderon and Galloway at the PG spot, we are going to complain about how Melo doesn't create for teammates (make them better).  i am hoping Grant can get to the hole in the NBA.

We should have traded for Lawson or at the minimum, bring back Shved.  Shved is far better than Calderon or Galloway at breaking down defenses and getting to the rim, thus creating and open shot.  we need shot creators.  as good as harden is at creating shots, he was happy they got Lawson to help him create shots.

I guess Phil forgot how Jordan and Kobe made the triangle system successful!!!

I still want to know when this alleged first meeting took place.

I don't understand this part Sam...above Sam Spiegelman writes:

"The Knicks drafted a power forward in Kristaps Porzingis, which in hindsight likely derailed their interest in Aldridge at his natural position. That, plus Carmelo Anthony has had enjoyed success while filling in at the No. 4 spot last year."

Porzingis is a long term project and a man without a position so to say they passed on Aldridge because they have Porzingis doesn't make any sense. Porzingis is hardly a power forward, he has no power.

Now on Carmelo at PF.  We all know Carmelo is coming of season-ending surgery and is entering the twilight of his career.  if you want to keep him healthy for  the remainder of his contract you play him at the 3. Yes he's a tough guy who's not afraid to play inside but you keep him for his SCORING not to rough-house with super-big men that wear him down.  (ditto Porzingis at this point)

Getting Aldridge would have been great. Not even talking to the guy no so great.

hashbury
hashbury

What Knick fan was curious?  The report was he wouldn't sign with the Knicks and there was no reason for it.  As to the Knicks wanting to exclusively play one of the best players in the NBA out of position, sounds about right.  More idiotic self destructive behavior by a totally overmatched front office and coaching staff.

drslick
drslick

I don't get it. Porzingis is 7'3''. Enter him in a few Coney Island hot dog eating comps and you have your center right there. If you have a shot at a player like Alrdridge, you tell him he can play wherever he wants.

j_spikett
j_spikett

@drslick doesn't matter how tall he is. he is to skinny to get inside position to rebound or post up. his height is wasted. he is simply a small forward nothing  more and will never be strong enough to play the inside effectively.

j_spikett
j_spikett

@hashbury @j_spikett @drslick here we go with the smits argument again. ok take a look at smits you will see he has a much different build. like the difference between a banana and an eggplant

j_spikett
j_spikett

@drslick he's 20 next month first of all. and it can't be remedies when you have a frame as narrow as his. GRANT has wider shoulders than him

uliar
uliar

@drslick Then Alrdridge would be accused of not being a team player and cancer by media. Phil would get thrown under the bus by SNY fanboy Frank Isola. There would be talk how terrible it was to spend max money on a greedy player who instead of signing with a contender, signed with the knicks for off the court opportunities.

devasher
devasher

@j_spikett @drslick There you go again. Is Porzingas 20 today? No. He's freaking 19. Get over it.

As far as the BS about his frame being small, you are stuck on Manute Bol of the 80's. Grow up. Does an ACL tear ruin a players career now too? Are we all listening to walkman's, blaring our boom boxes and recording our favorite TV shows on our shiny new VCR? No we aren't. Because technology. Porzingas has a thin frame because he is STILL (whether you like it or not) a teenager, who has been growing in the past 6 months.

The dude's hands are gigantic which actually speak to negate you argument about frame when the bone structure is like that. And he is no less heavy than Pau Gasol was coming into the league. Pau Gasol, the guy who won ROY in 2001 average nearly 18 pts and 9 rebounds. Same weight, 1 inch shorter.

powermoves
powermoves

@Thomas LaBella @hashbury @j_spikett @drslick this kid definitely needs to put weight on to play D and rebound, but as far as the offense is concerned, I don't see why he wouldn't just stretch the floor as much as possible to open everything up for Melo et al

drslick
drslick

Skinny can be remedied. Height can not. Feed the kid. Get him a gym membership. Problem solved. He's 19. He will get heavier
