In the second period last night the New Jersey Devils didn’t score but pinned the Rangers in their own zone and created a lot of offensive pressure.
It was during the intermission between the second and third period where, according to Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal on MSG, the Rangers put the first 40 minutes behind them and focused on the final 20.
McDonagh said, “We talked about just wiping away the first two periods. If we win a period we can win a hockey game. We simplified our game plan a little bit and executed,” and Staal added, “after the second we felt pretty fortunate and we just needed to win one period and we get a game. “
On the game as a whole, Brian Leetch said on MSG, “the Devils started to control some of the shifts in the second period but the Rangers just had to win one period and they did with that early goal.”
Travis Zajac said to Chico Resch, “We played well for 40 minutes and they changed our game.”
Devils captain Zach Parise added that the team played “okay until the third period. We didn’t play as well after they got the goal”
