As the Rangers enter game five at Madison Square Garden tonight, one of the main issues facing the team has been the lack of production from their “top players.”
- Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards have one goal and two assists.
- Ryan Callahan two goals and one assist
- Derek Stepan and Brandon Dubinsky have zero points
Callahan told Katie Strang at ESPN NY that it’s time for the top guys to step up for the Rangers, “you’re best players have to be at your best at this time of year. You need ‘em. You’re going to have other guys step up and score big goals like Boyle has; Stralman has two now. For us to win the series we definitely have to have our top guys going.”
John Tortorella told Strang that he wants the Rangers top guys to “be top guys.”
It’s not an effort issue with these guys, it’s just a matter of production. They are working hard and trying to create chances, but either aren’t getting the bounces or they aren’t working hard enough. This team can win this series and move on if Henrik Lundqvist plays great and the Rangers continue to get secondary scoring. That won’t last though and the Rangers won’t make it through another round unless their top guys start adding more to the scoresheet.
