Read: How John Tortorella Works With The Leadership Group

Following Rangers practice yesterday, John Tortorella was asked a question about how Ryan Callahan has been as a captain this season.

Tortorella responded that he seeks input from his entire leadership group on how to manage the team on certain issues, “I rely on the leadership group on how we want to go about our business and the logistics of getting ready to play. Cally, Richie, Marc, Danny and Rupper have really come into play in helping to understanding what they think. Sometimes a coach sees it one way, but you need to show them the respect, especially as we have evolved together here and let them have a little bit of say in what they are thinking as athletes.”

Ryan Callahan told Steve Serby in the NY Post that he is always speaking with Tortorella, “Yes I have, that’s part of it, just to get a feeling of what’s going on in the room, and tell that to him, and tell the guys exactly what’s he’s feeling too. … He’s approachable, so there’s nothing wrong with that.”

To  me, that is one of the best things that John Tortorella does and a big reason why I don’t think he will have problems like losing the locker room. He has grown with this team and knows most of the guys really well. He has talked a lot on the Behind the Bench shows about showing respect to the players, how arguments on the bench tend to bring him closer to the players and how he tries to give everyone a clean slate every day. I really think that he could be the Rangers coach for a long time.
