Read: Alexei Semenov Is Hopeful, Adds To Defensive Puzzle

Yesterday it was announced that the Rangers would bring in defenseman Alexei Semenov into training camp on a tryout basis. Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News spoke to Semenov’s agent Allan Walsh who said this about his client and the organization:

“They really liked him last year in camp, and he seemed to fit very well with Tortorella, enough so that they reached out to bring him back,” Walsh said. “So I anticipate this year, if he is successful in making the team, the contract itself would go very smoothly.”

…It seems pretty evident that the Rangers are concerned with a seventh defenseman spot with their invites of Semenov and Garnet Exelby. John Tortorella did like him last year as evidenced by the quote in the link above. The defense is still a tough puzzle to figure out because of Marc Staal, Wade Redden and Matt Gilroy. Staal should be signed, Redden will probably be gone and I hope that Gilroy understands the game better this season and plays up to his potential. Besides that, Michael Del Zotto, Dan Girardi and presumably Michal Rozisval all have spots. What about Steve Eminger? Where does he fit into this mix.

Training camp and the pre-season should be fun
