Rangers win the Victoria Cup

Right idea, wrong Cup.

However, great game and great effort out of the boys today as they defeated Metallurg Magnitogorsk 4-3.  Ryan Callahan stole the puck with 20 seconds to go to take the 4-3 lead and clinch the Victoria Cup for the Blueshirts.

The Rangers trailed 3-0 in the 2nd period before the Chris Drury scored late in the period on a 5 on 3.  Going into the 3rd, the Rangers started on a power play but were unable to score.  Forward Dan Fritsche rocketed a puck past Metallurg goaltender Andrei Mezin after a tremendous pass from blueliner Wade Redden.

Chris Drury, who will likely be named team captain before the season opener on Saturday, was able to tie the game, minutes before Callahan would give the Rangers the clincher.

The Rangers will finish the preseason on a solid note, after winning their last two and scoring 12 goals.

Saturday will start the new 82 game season, as the Rangers open in Prague against the new look TB Lightning.

Now that we have finally seen the “A” squad, I am not as pessimistic as I was.  The lines seem to be coming together, although, we are not sure exactly what they will be.  Drury-Gomez-Zherdev played well together and the obvious line of Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev worked well.  Drury got a lot more goal scoring opportunities on the wing.  We will wait and see.  One thing is for sure, it is officially time to lace up the skates.
