Out at training camp today, Andrew Gross spoke with newly invited defenseman Alexei Semenov and Finnish defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen.
Semenov on his game:
“I’m a big body, I want to play tough defense and help the team; I have a heavy shot,” said Semenov, adding he had no sense one way or the other what his chances of making the team were. “Sometimes, the big stars don’t know if they’ll be on the roster. I just want to come in in good shape and make the team, like the young kids do.”
Semenov was extended the invite last night by GM Glen Sather who drafted him into the NHL when he was with Edmonton.
As for the 24 year old Heikkinen, he could be looked at a potential powerplay QB:
“I make about every point on the power play, I think I have a really good slap shot,” Heikkinen said.
…Sounds good to me.

….Ive started to lean towards Heikkinen making the team along with Matt Gilroy. I would probably rather see Bobby Sanguinetti, but maybe he needs a little bit more time in Hartford. Heikkinen has played professionally in Finland for years now.
