Andrew: How are the Rangers going to shore up their defense? THEY CAN”T PLAY WITH FOUR GUYS THE WHOLE YEAR!
Adam Rotter: I agree with what John Tortorella said on the radio, twice, about the need more more defensive depth maybe being more important than bringing in a scorer. Hearing Tortorella say that makes me feel, as he alluded to earlier this week, that Michael Sauer won’t be ready for training camp, and even if he is, he isn’t someone that you can expect to just come in and be the same player.
The Rangers are going to have Michael Del Zotto, Ryan McDonagh, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi as four of the six defenseman. The problem will be who fits in the right defense spot on the second unit with Marc Staal. Tim Erixon and Michael Del Zotto are both left handed shots, but Erixon did play the right side during his time with the Rangers earlier this season. Justin Schultz is also a right shooting defenseman and could slip into that role if they sign him.
I don’t see the Rangers going big and throwing money at Ryan Suter or going after Shea Weber. I think that the Rangers have their core with Marc Staal, Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh and are looking to add more consistent depth to go along with Michael Del Zotto.
Of course, Michal Rozsival, a right handed shot, is a free agent.
