NEWS: Rangers select Shane McColgan and Samuel Noreau in the fifth round.

The New York Rangers have selected Shane McColgan (RW, Kelowna WHL) with the 134th pick.

McColgan is 5-8 and 165 lbs. He was ranked 115th by Future Considerations.

He had 21 goals and 45 assists this past season. He is from Manhattan Beach, California.

Read about Shane McColgan here. He wrote a blog for NHL.com

They took Samuel Noreau (D, Baie-Comeau QMJHL) with the 136th pick.

He is 6-4, 210 and had 5 goals and 5 assists in 67 games last season.

More on Noreau here and here.

Noureau is another defenseman in the Dylan McIlrath mold. A shutdown guy who is tough and fights. McColgan has some interesting skill and a nice story being from California. The Rangers have had some nice success with mid-round guys, he could be another.

Update: 5:55PM: Video interview with Noureau, where he says he wants to play like Chris Pronger, is below.

This team has 13 wins in regulation out of like 57 games enough is enough to the people still defending them saying oh well they r playing better ...idk any of the good teams out there that talk like that ohh were losing but playing good or like when cappy said last loss that he thinks were still in a good spot...were in last place what good spot r u talking about!...if cappy isnt gone this offseason im gnna lose it...im 25 ive been a fan all my life ive suffered through the worst ive seen maybe one really good year and they didnt even make it out of the first round that series vs toronto this is pathetic that thats my greatest memory of this team all these years

First game I didnt watch in years, had a feeling it was going to end up something like 4~1 rangers look pretty good lately, the obviously have there parts and coach working well. I drank the kool~aid and beleived in the Isles this season regardless of how other teams went but other teams are suprising, Carolina, how are the better and hot, Columbus, where did thry come from? So now its time to enjoy with no expectationd. What can Snow do? What's will happen to Vanak, Amac and any other trades the brass makes. How will the young talents make out over time ? Who can be the goalie to come here, or how will the ones were left to watch on the ice pan out time will only, the destination and definition of playoff success is lost to this die hard fan atm but the journey of hope remains. God I hope for a Cam ward, Solid D , depth and a coach thwt sets fire to players when things get tough

I'm sensing another 9 or 10-game losing streak. Yet somehow the coach will keep his job.

Anyone expecting a big move this off season has to realize that this is not the year they will do anything. While they should make major changes to this team, they will make their big move in 2 years when they go to Brooklyn. Look at some of the recent teams to move to a new building in general. The Marlins went on a spending spree when they moved, so did the Nets. My point is, once Ratner gets a hold of this team and wanting to bring in a big name to open the new arena, the isles big move will come in 2015. I know it's too far to look ahead realistically but names like Patrick Kane, Jonathon Toews, Bobby Ryan, Mike Green, Craig Anderson, and Antti Niemi could potentially hit the market. Obviously most of, if not all, of these guys will re sign with their teams but it's something to look for in the future. As for this upcoming off season, look for more cheap fixes that this team is known for and another disappointing year.

Not that I don't want Vanek on the team, I just don't think they needed to include Moulson in the deal!  It's my understanding that it was done because we couldn't afford to have both! You know, with one of the lowest payrolls in the league ! I think the chemistry issue cost us that 11 for 13 in November/December

It's time to hold the GM accountable...this is yje thrid game in a row that the Islanders didn't show up for the 3rd period. We all know Cappy is a lousy coach but if he doesn't have the horses to compete against the good team you have to blame Snow...

Steve J. Gonzalez

I like Moulson and feel he is a talented goalscorer . I am not trying to throw him under the bus. But I still feel Vanek is a more talented player who seems to be in the right place in front of the net at the right time on many occasions.

Steve J. Gonzalez

Harry, you're probably right about Vanek. I would like the team to keep Vanek because he had been playing very well with Tavares and Okposo until the last several games. They make a strong combination and I would not like to see them broken up. We have been searching for a consistent first line even though Moulson matched well too. However, I do believe that Vanek is a much more skilled player than Moulson and brings that first line to an even higher scoring level.

Bill Waibel
Bill Waibel

Turning point for this team was the Moulson trade ! Destroyed the team Chemistry. Moulson's lunch pail, pay the price in front of the net style was the identity of the team that took it to Cindy and the Penguins last year. Vanek, while a talented guy, has that floating around offensive style and a lazy defensive style that drives me crazy !!

Capuano has presided over more losing streaks than I've seen since the late 90's. This is a mockery

Steve J. Gonzalez

And the person who called me a fat loser fred flinstone simpleton about a half hour ago doesn't understand how I and many other longtime Islander fans are upset over this season. It has been a tough, dejected year and it's not over yet. If you feel that way about me keep your dumb comments to yourself.

Harry (PJP)

And the coach and GM still stand strong. Is there no accountability in this BS organization?

Steve J. Gonzalez
Steve J. Gonzalez

We have to sign Vanek to show that free agents that we're not the curse many teams and players around the NHL think we are. We need a seasoned playoff coach to handle this team. Capuano is a good man but he can't seem to take this team out of the doldrums to the next step. Get rid of AMAC by the trade deadline, sign one or two veteran defensemen over the summer and a top notch goaltender. There are a group on the market this summer.

Milbury had the good sense to resign after 10 distastrous years as GM, will Snow follow him or will his ego get in the way! As for goaltending, Anaheim has 4, Hiller, Andersen, Fasth and John Gibson. Maybe we can get one of them. Hiller will be a UFA so Snow might trade a first rounder to get him!!! Regardless, this team desperately needs a new coach.

Again, Look at the Punch to Cizikas (with the mask protecting his jaw), no call, he shows discipline. Zuccerella Holds Clutterbucks stick, draws a penalty and they score

Bailey should have scored 3 goals tonight!  The kid is shot...

Mike O'Connor
Mike O'Connor

The talent on this team is just so sub par but they stick with it. Makes me want to puke to see Bailey, Colin McDonald, and Regin on the. McDonald is a minus 20, it is hard to suck that bad. Bailey misses the net all the time or fans on the shot., he sucks. Please dump Regin pretty please send him to Bridgeport he'll clear waivers I promise. They stick with these chumps to long, move some guys in and out, promote someone, now that the season is over. They have to start holding these guys accountable for sucking this bad. I think we sign Vanek because we can offer him eight years. Amac gotta get trade and he should bring back something good. Need a goaltender in the worst way so start there.

I just read that the Rangers offered Callahan 5 years around 30 million and he turned it down. He wants 7 years at 42 million. Its hard to believe a 40 to 50 point player turns that type of money down.

Garbage season. Waste of time.

@jpizzy  How much longer can fans stand this? And I know there are folks that have suffered through this far longer than me. I saw Ziggy play and I saw Ziggy go. It's like Groundhog Day with this godforsaken franchise. Someone help us!

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Steve J. Gonzalez  Yeah, but it wasnt a straight up swap. We gave up a ton for this guy. It wasnt worth it. Not by a long shot. Try to recoup assets

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Steve J. Gonzalez  " who seems to be in the right place in front of the net at the right time on many occasions."

My man, you're describing Mr. Matt Moulson

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Steve J. Gonzalez  I mean if Vanek was driving play ala Rick Nash I could justify it, but he hasn't shown anything remarkable that Moulson has not. He's slow and a defensive liability. Sure, he's a gifted scorer, but...so was Moulson and we gave up a tremendous amount of assets for what amounts to another moulson

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Steve J. Gonzalez  I'll be honest. Fans tell me this all the time, but I have yet to see it. He seems to have integrated himself into Moulson's role almost to a tee. Just another big body in front of the net. ABSOLUTELY not worth what we gave up for him that's for sure.

Moulson was a multiple 30 goal scorer. I can't believe fans throw him under the bus like this...

Stephen Tosti
Stephen Tosti

@Bill Waibel Somewhat agree with Harry.  Every game this yr is lost by our goaltending and defense.  How many games has our goaltenders stolen pts...probably under 5.  Even tonight.  We got better offensive chances but Henrik outplayed Nabby.

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Bill Waibel  No the turning point was when our moron GM neglected to address every pressing need this team had and decided to trade our most prized assets for MORE FORWARDS?!?!?

Harry (PJP)
Harry (PJP)

@Steve J. Gonzalez  Depending on the return, trading Vanek might be more beneficial to us both in the short and long term than signing him to a monster deal

@rmreturns

And you know the owner isn't selling and the GM isn't getting fired how?

Keep on bouncing atop Chuck Wang's knee...

How 'bout we take the old fraudster out on a

gurney instead?

Mike O'Connor
Mike O'Connor

@rmreturns  Your right, I wish people would stop whining about it. So what you think RM time to make some moves? We spoke earlier about it and you were very optimistic about playoffs. Do you still feel that way? People here are missing the good things like Dono, DaHann, Nelson, and Hickey. These guys are turning into good hockey player before our eyes. The Strome thing puzzles  me he should be here and Regin should be out. Start moving the dead weight out, there's no upside to C. McDonald, so lets move him out. The one thing we've discover this year is we have no goalie of the future so that should be first priority. Does AMAC fetch us Subban? What you think?

Keep making lame excuses you mean they have better goaltending then we do Capt Obvious

Mike O'Connor

@steviel  Your right, and looked horrible not scoring them. He's the Ike Davis of the Isles never gonna be successful here, needs a change of scenery.

steviel

@mrcisback  reports are that Kane and Toews may be 11 million dollar a year players when their contracts come up next year due to the caps going up. Gives you an idea of the numbers JT will be expecting in a couple of years. Can Isles compete with that?  I know Toronto will!

He's a small guy who plays with wreck less abandon which leads to injuries which would keep me from giving him a long term big money contract

Waste of my money too!!

@orange2327  Absolutely right, man his FA pick ups suck. JPB and Regin are evidence of that. Instead of signing 2 chumps how bout one real player.

Harry .... I am with you, it burns me to see any negative comments about Moulson. He was a proud Islander that produced and did the jersey proud AND WANTED TO BE HERE.

4xdynasty

As far as 4th liners go colin mcdonald is not an issue on this team. Problems lie in lines 2&3 as well as d n goalie

dkdk
dkdk

Well since Brooklyn will fix all of our problems .... Lol .... They should be able to max him out. And Potvin, Lidstrom, and Bourque too. I meant Reinhart, Pulock, and mayfield. I always get them confused.

Corsi also said that PMB "made everyone everyone around him better" .... And then al arbour said "what is Corsi" .... So much for Corsi

4xdynasty
4xdynasty

After all the corsi mention is plus/minus really indicative of a players ability?

Mike O'Connor
Mike O'Connor

@rmreturns  summed it up well, like our chances with Vanek and this is why Snow made the deal,  introduced him to the Island, Taveres and most of all the ability of signing him to an 8th year. Don't think Snow makes the deal unless he's serious about signing him. Vanek can see the future is bright here so I'm optimistic. This is the problem with rebuilding through the draft...growing pains...it takes forever and all your picks gotta hit or else no way it takes five years. Look at the Oilers same thing, you need some key FA signing to work in combination with the draft. Disagree with you about Poulin, if  they thought he was for real he'd be playing over Nabby. I'm fustrated with Bailey, he's young but you can't have a player fall apart like this. He's killing them in a top six role, can't be invisible on the second line. Snow has done well given the budget his draft picks have been good and he hasn't panicked like Milbury. So we gotta be patient, we're real young so focus on the kids. So please move the dead wood and get Lee and Strome up now.

It cuts it in 29 out of 30 teams every year...

And some day you will realize you are watching pro sports and not a league of 10 year olds, they get paid for the bottom line results and giving a good effort and being competitive but falling short year after year after year........ doesn't cut it

You brought up the goaltending, you're using that as a excuse now, when do you plan to use the Hammer excuse? Your list of excuses is never ending.
