NEWS: Matt Gilroy Signs With The Whale…..Then Probably The Rangers

Larry Brooks tweets that former Ranger Matt Gilroy has signed an AHL deal with the Whale.

He adds that when the lockout ends it is likely that Gilroy will sign with the Rangers.

Gilroy signed last summer with Tampa and was then traded to Ottawa.

Last season Gilroy averaged 17:30 per game in 67 games and had 3 goals and 17 assists. He was a plus two and had 75 blocked shots.

Gilroy killed 1:07 of penalties per night and is a right handed defenseman.

Gilroy is from North Bellmore.

Adam Rotter: I have always been a big fan of Gilroy though it seems like at this point he is what he is. He can challenge to be the top skater on the team, has some offensive skill, but is a bottom pairing defenseman. He is 28, but time in the AHL, where he can learn the Rangers system with little pressure could maybe help him realize some of the potential that he had coming out of college.
