NEWS: Jeff Gorton Hired As Assistant GM

Update: 5:07PM:

Brooks tweets that Gorton will replace Cam Hope as assistant GM. He does say that there is no line of succession for Glen Sather.

Original Post:

Larry Brooks tweets that the Rangers have promoted Jeff Gorton to assistant GM.

Gorton was previously the Rangers Assistant Director of Player Personnel.

Assistant GM Cam Hope is leaving the organization.

I love this and I hope it means that Gorton will stay with the organization for a long time.

@since72 I agree. What do you think about Samuelson being a head Coach some day ?He was a gritty Hockey Player and he is not getting a lot of credit for the job He is doing with the Rags.

Vanek's skating ability is a problem.  They were ripping him on the CBC feed.  Couldn't keep up with the pace of the game.

Vanek with  his lousy play in his own zone has really shown its ugly head.Buffalo fans were saying this for years. He is lazy and like Mcdonald He gets caught out of position and can not make it up because he has no quickness.Buffalo will be a up and coming Team  and Vanek will be a year closer to retirement.

The Wild have Parisi,Nino,Haula,Granlund,Pominville,Suter, koviou,Coyle,Sturgeon,Moulson .  Zucker and Dumba ready to come up for next year .Why the heck do they need an aging crybaby like Vanek .Miller probably will be there only signing .There Team is  will be set after Miller. They also have a lot of restricted and unrestricted free Agents to sign.

Not since Messier have the Rangers had a guy in the the room who provides the X-factor  St. Louis does.  Vigneault is an excellent coach.  He out coached Bylsma and he's out coaching Therrien.  Rangers average shift length in the Pittsburgh series was 33 seconds, 12 seconds less than the Pens.  Fresher legs, better jump.  The French-Canadian factor is also in play with the Rangers.  Marginal guys like Brassard - prior to his injury - and Pouliot have gone through walls for Vigneault.  Kreider has been a force since his return, not only with his speed, but with his "sandpaper".  He's been a big, nasty body in front of the net.  Lundqvist has always been good, he's all world now.  The "D" has finally figured it out.  Boyle has been a pest.  He drove Crosby crazy and is wearing down the much smaller Habs.  Seems like they're heading to a finals showdown against a formidable opponent.  We'll see what happens.

I think I'm gonna be sick right now!

You would think that our ex-goalie, G.M. would have a clue as to how important a solid goalie is, especially in the playoffs. The queen is making the Rags look like world beaters!

Vanek is a wuss! He does not seem to get his hands dirty. No compete level!! He does not have the character to take a team to the next level, and for the money he's asking, he should do just that!

Habs are shooting from every angle except the crease. They need to storm the net, and they are not. Run the queen for god's sake!!

Can't stand Sather, but hey, he brings in players to win. We have been drafting high for 20 years and are continually stuck at the bottom 5. Maybe Garth should go fishing with Glen, and leave the work to someone who is good at it!

I was just reading on a Montreal web site. You can't believe how many Canadian fans are so disgusted with Thomas Vanek and want no part of him any more. I guess he is going to Minnesota after all.  Actually did anyone catch mad Mikes comments about Vanek in between periods. Something to the fact that its a good thing the Islanders saved 50 by not signing Vanek. If we only had goaltending.

bobb

The philosophy of the islanders and most of its fans is that mediocrity is acceptable and something to strive for. Just making the playoff seems good enough. Rarely, if ever, do I see a post by an Islander fan on how we compete for the cup. It's always if we get x, y and z, trade a, b and c and get a new GM and owner, we should be a playoff team. And Islander management, coaching staff, players and the owner all have that same mentality. Isn't it sad? We sit and here trash Sather when he generally has drafted well (Staal, Krieder, Stepan, Callahan etc...) signs undrafted players that have an impact (Gerardi, Zucurello,) and frequently gets himself out of  bad trades and freeagent contracts(Gomez, Redden, Gaborik, Holik), To know that the Rangers are only 2 games away from going to the cup as we rebuild and hope for 10 things to happen just to be competitive makes me want to not follow hockey and be a big baseball fan again. Oh wait, maybe not. I'm a Mets fan.

Lundquist playing lights out, following this game for nearly 50 years, and barely seen net minding like what he is playing right now.

So is his heart and his brain. What a stupid penalty to take.

@truth77 yeah that would be ironic that after turning down the Sabres, Isles and Habs, Minnesota doesn't even offer him a contract!  I think he had better leave it all on the ice in whatever games he has left with Montreal.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@Macacawitz   I disagree a little Mac. St Louis is a very good player but the X-Factor has been Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist is a superstar like John Tavares. With out Lundqvist the Rangers don't beat Philly and the Penguins. Out of the 14 games in the first two rounds he single handedly stole 5 games just like last nights game against Montreal when he stopped 40 shots.

@erika

Uh oh, You are going to get killed for saying Vanek is a wuss, a certain no-it-all in here believes that the Snow deal for Vanek was the greatest move since the Isles signed Mike Bossy.

shlo

@mrcisback Just read about the vanek situation and Minni. They probably will not offer him close to what we did, they do not take the position that you have to sign him at any cost. Nothing close to 7 mil per,or  long term, 4 years at best. His stock is down, his work ethic is a question for most people.

orange2327
orange2327

To me sathers biggest change was his realization that you build from the back out. It took a while and he made some mistakes but lunqvist and his 4 dmen are the strength of this team. Snow has had 8 years to bring in a better netminder and draft and or trade for better dmen. He's failed miserably.

orange2327

Only quick can match lunqvist but they aren't getting past chitown.

@mrcisback @Macacawitz  Lundquist is their best player no question and the main reason they are where they are right now.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@mrcisback @Macacawitz  I meant specifically in terms of galvanizing the locker room.  Prior to the acquisition of St. Louis, Lundqvist was the guy the press would go for a quote after a tough loss, and his frustration was beginning to show.  With St. Louis in the room, Lundqvist seems to be playing with a new energy.  He just has to stop the puck, not make excuses for the team.

mrcisback

@shlo @mrcisback   Wouldn't that be funny Shlo if Minnesota tells Vanek your not our top priority. Take or leave it contract.

since72

@shlo @mrcisback Minnesota needs a goalie and will probably go after Miller.  If there is any money left, then they will talk with Vanek.  I don't see Vanek as their priority, but Minnesota is Vanek's priority.  If they offer him 4 yrs $25 mio, what is he going to do?  For once Mad Mike may be right.

But is he better than Poulin?

jepliberty

@orange2327

He must have gone to bed at night for the past few games with a horseshoe, and  4 leaf clover up his arse. along with his skill at stopping the puck, as he has also been lucky.

@orange2327

Hope so, or it;s going to make a bunch of us fans who already are in a foul mood even nastier, and more angry.

@Chris R @jepliberty

Chris, The first few minutes of the 1st period they threw everything at him including the kitchen sink, so as much as I hate lauding him he is the answer right now for them.

orange2327

Lunqvist is good enough to steal a cup this year.

orange2327
orange2327

The rangers have something we havent had in ages. 2 pair or solid dmen. McDonough is norris trophy caliber guy and staal/girardi are very good too. Straalman is underrated. Slats also made a nice little move dealing dead wood in del zotto for kline who is a useful 5-6 backliner. Btw the same time snowjob was signing staios rags were signing straalman.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

id still liek to see that money be spent on obviously a goalie, but also to target a guy like michalek. i think he'd be a good fit for that first line and hes a natural left wing.

shlo

@tag1 @slapshot18_rsHe did OK for a while on the 1st line and then it was down hill. They are not as forgiving north of the border...

slapshot18_rs

i agree. he still can put up numbers, but he doesnt seem to be making anyone around him a better player.

@slapshot18_rs I think playing with JT and KO raised his game I don't think he is the type that raises another players game.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

that seems to have been his style all along - its fine when hes putting up the numbers to back it up but when hes not it just appears hes coasting.  hes still a valuable player obviously, but not worth breaking the bank for.

tag1

@mrcisback It's amazing that a guy that is looking for a new contract like he is is loafing around as much as he is. He gets his goals but it seems like most of the time he is invisible out there.

doc942

@phishstyx1 @since72 @shlo @mrcisback  If the Islanders dodged a bullet by giving Vanek a take it or leave it offer, and Vanek turned it down - then Garth trades Vanek for a 2nd rounder and a 20 year old prospect... how does that prove that Garth is "clueless"?  At the time the offer was made, Vanek was 1/3 of the best line in hockey and we ALL wanted him signed long term.

mrcisback

@Don22 @mrcisback @since72 @shlo  Don, you know what i don't understand is no matter what the cap numbers are for the 2014-15 season a top goaltender like Halak has got to be signed at all costs. Everybody on the Islanders except John Tavares takes a back seat to getting Halak signed. If Halak wants 4,5 or 6 million a year we have to pay it. Once Halak is signed then we'll figure out everyone else's contract situation on the team. If some players have to be moved the so be it. My fear is the closer we get to July-1 Halak might tell his agent you know what lets just wait till July-1st and see whats out there.

Don22
Don22

@mrcisback @Don22 @since72 @shlo I'mnot....yet.  An article posted here a few days ago said it best.  All GMs are waiting to sign their own guys until they find out the cap numbers.  Depending on where those numbers fall could put some teams out of running for FAs, or IN running for FAs.  Why sign someone now if it might turn out to be more than the market commands?

I do feel a very serious effort will be made to sign him.  Even as bad as Garth has shown to be, they all know the team MUST improve this next season before going into Brooklyn.

Another train of thinking might be that Garth has to also wait until the team is sold.  When you sell a business you want to keep your expenses as low as possible.

Still think it's getting done though.

@phishstyx1 @since72@shlo@mrcisback Garth is a complete moron and it boggles my mind he is still employed. Vanek is a waste of space with all the talent and no heart. You wasted a 1 and were about to make a guy going through the motions your highest paid player ? He does not understand what it takes to build a winning team with character and heart and he never will. Fire Snow now !

Don22
Don22

@since72 @shlo @mrcisback St. Louis signed Elliott and said they won't sign Miller.  I think that actually helps the Isles in signing Halak.  The market will probably be bigger for Miller than Halak, so the Isles may truly be his best option for a good contract and number 1 status.

@orange2327   Maybe with his French accent he was misconstrued and he said he is the raw deal.
