Buzz: The UFA’s That John Tortorella Still Has Interest In

While meeting with the media yesterday, John Tortorella said that he still had interest in retaining unrestricted free agents Ruslan Fedotenko, Vinny Prospal, Matt Gilroy and Steve Eminger.

Tortorella said that he was impressed with Gilroy’s play the last quarter of the season and the playoffs.

He also said that Steve Eminger could be a good to return because the Rangers know him and his style of play.

I think that the Rangers want Gilroy to come back, but wanted him back on their terms and price and not what his qualifying offer was. He certainly was better near the end of the season, but he doesn’t look like anything more than a third pair defenseman. Eminger is the same. He can offer a bit of toughness, but he is a streaky player.

I think that Feds will be back and that will take care of itself once Brad Richards is settled. Prospal is another story. Torts is right and Vinny needs to wait and see how the situation plays out. It’s no secret that I am a Prospal fan, maybe the biggest, and since the Rangers could use another veteran forward, why not bring him back if there is a spot?

Update: 7:26AM
In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers may have interest in Mike Rupp, Tanner Glass and possibly defenseman Anton Babchuk and Jan Hejda if the price is right.

Rupp, 31, is a ten minute a game player who fought 12 times last season. Glass, 27, had 10 fights last season.

Rupp had a cap hit of $825,000 last season. Glass had a cap hit of $625,000.

Babchuk had 11 goals and 24 assists last season for Calgary. He had a cap hit of $1.4 million last season.

Hejda, 33, had over 150 hits and blocked shots last season. He made $2 million last season.

Rupp is intriguing, just for the fact that he could no longer score on the Rangers if he played for them
