BUZZ: The Rangers and Ryan Callahan Are “A Ways Apart”

Bartlett goes on to say that Callahan would be a real attractive target for an offer-sheet.

Glen Sather said after the draft that he didn’t expect to have his RFA’s signed before July 1.

First, I am pretty sure that the Rangers will match any offer for Callahan. Besides Marc Staal and Henrik Lundqvist, you could argue that he is the Rangers most important player and the forward that John Tortorella trusts more than any other. If he were to garner an offer sheet and the Rangers not match, it’s likely that the Rangers would get a first and a third in compensation. I wouldn’t worry about the two sides being far apart. This is the beginning of the process and Sather wants to take it slow with the RFAs.

Callahan signed his last contract on July 13th, 2009.

I've lived off of Long Island for seven of my 38 years, and here are my observations:

1) Long Island is the most communal place I've ever lived in. Very close-knit... but to a fault, and the following observations will help explain why.

2) Long Island is late on trends like fashion, slang, and is generally at least two years behind what's "hip"

OK, now, here's what I think is interesting: In the 70's and early 80's, the Islanders had no Long Island influence. Bill Torrey, Al Arbour had no clue what life on Long Island was like. Denis Potvin thought Long Island was a part of New York City. Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, Billy Smith.... nothing to do with Long Island prior to arriving there. And the fans... the fans were new to having their first Major League sports team.

So what's the problem, and what's the point?  The obvious argument is "None of the players on the Islanders now are from Long Island." - and that's true, but things have gotten really cozy. The hard core fans have embraced the team and in either a tangible or intangible way, they have forged emotional attachments to the players. Which leads to every player, for as long as this has been a losing team and organization, no player can do any wrong, no player can ever be traded, all of our draft picks are superstars to be.

This is a big part of the reason why the team and organization is getting away with being substandard. Chaz Wang is a direct Long Island tie, and he's verbally tried to forge a relationship with the fans by saying things like "The people of Long Island deserve better." However, that's in regards to the venue, clearly not in regards to the team. Mike Milbury trumpeted Wang as a savior, and the fans fell for it, too. Maybe that's because that's what Wang programmed Milbury to say.

There are 29 other teams where the hockey people run the hockey operations. Go through your mental Rolodex, every team that has sucked while we've had regular top 10 picks are now picking well outside of the top 10, not because of trades, but because of improving... we haven't done that.

We've been sold on the future since 1988, and that's not an  exaggeration. Long Island, as a community, does not update! The buildings are not taken care of, nothing is ever painted, washed, or renovated in any way whatsoever.  I've lived there, I've left there, and I've been back to visit. The way the team is run is emblematic of the community. The team's tactics are not going to change because the community does not demand change! You talk about a walkout or some sort of protest, and there's nothing. You want all kinds of players around the league, but you don't want to give any of your own up. You're still saying "Be patient with Josh Bailey".... JOSH BAILEY!!!! Come on, you must understand by now that the guy completely sucks. Please tell me you're not that delusional! Before then, Rick DiPietro was defended for at least five years too long. You get off on your draft picks, you convince yourselves Vanek is going to sign, and you get sold on a "Strong finish" in meaningless games every single year.

The thing is, folks, there's no demand for improvement in any respect. There's some desire for it, but no actual demand. Long Island is home to some of the nations most corrupt politicians, stressed employees, and worst team in sports. The world is bigger than Long Island, and a lot of natives and residents don't seem to realize that, and that's what helps allow this owner to get away with what he gets away with. He's got enough fans and people wrapped around his finger.

" infamous protest", huh ?

Is that anything like the infamous financial Securities fraud who owns the Team, or that infamous 4billion dollar Tower of Babel he proposed building?

How 'bout those infamous 35-Day billing periods?

When does that infamous Wang protégé finish serving his sentence in Federal Penitentiary?

Perhaps infamy is in the eye of the beholder.

Somewhere on a Canadiens blog, some irate fan is complaining that they gave up Collberg for this scrub Vanek. Though I guess it would be in french.

Don't look now but Montreal is losing tonite 3-1 to Ottawa!! Collberg and nothing for vanek!!

@Jason Zimmermann  from the way you describe long island, i'd say it's not too different from a lot of other places.

@Jason Zimmermann  You make a lot of points… just not so sure they make sense.  There's causation and correlation.  I think there's a correlation with all of your arguments.  But it is not the cause of the outcome.  It's like saying the first day of Spring causes flowers to bloom when in reality it is the length of day, angle of Sun's rays hitting Earth etc. not the date on the calendar.  And there are exceptions to your examples.  There are "hockey people" running the teams in Edmonton, Toronto, Winnipeg and then there are young budding stars like Okposo and de Haan that most fans wanted traded for a bag of pucks last year.  Oops.

@John Richards  well, you get a pp and then the ref doesn't blow the whistle, and there you go.  or at least it helps.

You guys are going all grassy knoll on this blog tonite I'm loving it!!

dkdk
dkdk

Thanks Mitch .... I really get infuriated when we criticize wang and snow and are told "we aren't fans" but those same guys rip guys that gave their all for us while having to overcome the ineptitude of the same two above them! Kills me. I will never utter a bad word about Moulson. I hope he gets every penny he could, keeps potting goals, and gets a cup.

dkdk
dkdk

Exactly John .... Anything snow does is praised but when guys leave simply for market value they are demonized. Moulson probably would have stayed for even less than what the market would pay yet snow said he wasn't even an option to come back! Why? All he did was score here and make the pp better. And no even asks snow (to lie) about why he was never an option.

John Richards
John Richards

You are absolutely right!! The corsi boys will defend our drafted prospects to the hilt but hate on guys like Matty moulson/PA/BOYES who wanted to be paid reasonable money but Bailey/strait/get multi yr deals they stink up the joint regularly...

dkdk
dkdk

Agreed there too Mitch and I have also been told that since I hate snow I shouldn't be able to like ANY of his picks. Like if you go to your favorite restaurant I guess you have to like every item there.

Just doesn't make sense.

The other think I hate and I mean despise is like you said if you don't like wang or snow you aren't a fan. We are front and center saying we don't like them but we support the PLAYERS. and that is where I get to the Corsi boys have no problem showing their snow affection but they go from liking PA and loving Moulson then they leave and those guys kill them! Rip them apart. And why because they wanted decent money! That is their biggest crime. Moulson loved it here, always gave effort, and was JT friend. Why does anyone need to rip him? So hypocritical!

dkdk
dkdk

True Mitch ... And also they are so "amazed" at the amount of prospects we have when all we have done is draft in the lottery every year and never improve, whT would one expect?

John Richards
John Richards

No doubt the majority( in numbers terms) of fans have been driven off several years ago!! What is left is a curious hodgepodge of hardcore loyalists and casual patrons of a nvmc that is in its twighlight!!

dkdk
dkdk

Mitch, I agree with a lot that Jason wrote but think you really drove it home. The majority of the fanbase was driven off years ago, another portion of it was turned away or are in process of it because of Bklyn, and what is left is largely apathetic and or disengaged, just beaten down and broken with nothing left to give. And the last fraction after that are the ones that think snow is amazing, that the yearly last 10 game hot streak somehow means next year will be better, that it isn't fair to criticize Bailey yet despite that he has 400 games under his belt, etc.

Maybe some other owners gave us body blows but wang threw one heck of a knockout punch. And he knocked the fans mouth piece all he way into a basketball arena in a basketball boro.

dkdk
dkdk

Maybe vanek gets his first win as a Hab. The Sabres were the worst team in the league when they traded him. We had the worst record in the league while he was here. And the Habs have been skidding. Maybe he is the franchise altering player snow thought. Just completely in reverse of course.

And that is EXACTLY what glen healey said at the deadline. He is supremely talented, but does coast a lot, and is not a winning player.

ejej

@dkdk- That's it...Habs win in OT... wow what a come back.

@dkdk- The Islanders will be in Hamilton Ontario in a few years. Already in the works, with Gary at the helm, driving the temporary up-Chuck travesty. We'll talk about it soon, face to face, with Tag and some of the other boys. Steak and drinks on me when I come up, summer or this fall..
