Leslie Treff tweets that in her opinion, McIlrath isn’t quite ready yet but that it’s low risk move to call him up now.

Adam Rotter: It’s the right time to give McIlrath a shot even if it’s only for a short time. He can get some NHL experience and hopefully push both John Moore and Michael Del Zotto to be better. The ideal situation would be for him to step in and play well enough to stay, like Ryan McDonagh did as a rookie, but that seems like a stretch right now. The key for McIlrath is to get his feet wet in the NHL and then take what he learns back to Hartford and either play well enough to force the organization to call him back up or

NEW YORK, December 11, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has recalled defenseman Dylan McIlrath from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

McIlrath, 21, has registered three goals and four assists for seven points, along with 115 penalty minutes in 24 games with Hartford this season. His three goals mark a career-high, while he established a career-high in points with his sixth of the season, an assist, on November 16 at Bridgeport. McIlrath currently leads the AHL in penalty minutes, is tied for third in the league with nine fighting majors, and is tied for second among Wolf Pack defensemen in goals. He notched a goal in consecutive games on October 6 against Albany and October 11 against Adirondack, including his first professional goal on October 6.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was originally selected as the Rangers’ first round choice, 10th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

24 games for the Rangers?

At least it's someone that will make other teams think twice about crowding Hank. SICK of seeing other teams bump him and NOTHING happens.

This is a good move, they need to purge this roster of the mediocre veterans who are wasting space on the NY Rangers roster!

@Alex Agnew

I agree he gets bumped, pushed and sticked constantly. Mciirath will fight anybody and the Rangers need toughness, along with size, scoring and just plain and simple better players!.
