Read: Wade Redden Has A Sour Taste

At ESPN.com, Pierre LeBrun caught up with Wade Redden who said that he has a “sour taste” in his mouth from how things with the Rangers turned out.

Redden said that he enjoyed his time in Hartford but that his goal is to return to the NHL.

He added that in the future he hopes that the new CBA will either make it harder to send players with big contracts down to the minors or to make it easier for teams to move those players and give them another chance to play in the NHL.

Redden could sign with the Whale but risks suspension without NHL pay if he gets injured down there before the season starts.

How pathetic.

is this something like that oath of omertà that mets fans and ex players were mailed out to sign?

How to stop Rex from bloviating?

If I was the GM, I would tell Rex that whatever he floats out there in the media, whether it be praising a player or predicting the playoffs or top 5 defenses, I would hold him accountable for.

So, if he predicts the playoffs and the team doesn't make it, HE will be held responsible.

If he predicts a top 5 defense and the defense does worse, HE will be responsible.

If he predicts big things for a player and that player does squat, HE will be responsible.

Rex would either stop bloviating or get fired very quickly.

I don't see how Rex is taking pressure off his players by his bloviating.

Bill Walsh didn't do it.

Vince Lombardi didn't do it.

Bill Belichick doesn't do it.

Didn't he learn from predicting a Super Bowl victory which didn't happen?

P.S. I like Rex as a coach, not as a PR man.

@a57se

HE will be held responsible.

What are you going to do send Rex to bed without dinner?

Please stop these stupid posts

@a57se Good thing you're not his GM, nor will you ever be.

Brendan

@Lloyd Jay Reife Al Davis did it.

Joe Namath did it.

Jerry Jones/Jimmie Johnson did it.

Seattle Seahawks/Pete Carroll did it.

Or are we just cherry-picking things that work against Rex?

@UncleJoesJetFarm Rex from just 2 weeks ago:

Responding to recent headline-making boasts by some of his players, the Jets coach endorsed the outward confidence even though he knows it could make his team a target.

"You get a few bullets shot at you when you take this approach, so maybe that's not recommended, but you know what? It's who we are. It's how we feel," Ryan said Tuesday after practice. "They can laugh, but they have to play us too, so we'll see at the end of the day.

"The beauty of it is we get to find out. We're not running from it. We're running into it."

@Brendan

I'm only aware of Namath "guaranteeing" a victory in the future.  Jerry Jones is a putz.  Jimmy Johnson, I'm not aware threw out a prediction. If Pete Carroll made a prediction, he did it as a twice-fired NFL coach.

Fans are more interested in the product on the field, not in Woody's contests , or Rex's forecasts.

Yes, I'm pointing out things Rex tried and wasn't successful at that are tangential to his football coaching skills, predicting.

Do you really think there is anything positive about Rex putting this out there?

@a57se @Brendan

While I don't agree with the over the top solution to end Rex's big talking that 57 suggests.

I do agree and wish he would tone it down a little and let us win something first.

Even just a dvision title would be nice.

You guys would love the team even more if that happened.

NY Jets Defense under Rex Ryan:

2009 236 points allowed, 1st in points and 1st in total yards

2010 304 points allowed, 6th in points and 3rd in total yards

2011 363 points allowed, 20th in points and 5th in total yards

2012 375 points allowed, 20th in points and 8th in total yards

2013 387 points allowed, 19th in points and 11th in total yards

There are a few patterns here that Rex should really look at before telling us how good his D will be.

@a57se That if he says he will have a top-5 defense he'll be right more often than not?

@Brendan @a57se  Set a goal, attain said goal

Fine, set the goal in the locker room, not in the biggest media  market in the world.

Brendan

@a57se Three top-5 defenses in five years. That's "more often than not."

Brendan

@Lloyd Jay Reife What's the difference?

Are you of the camp that teams will now try harder to beat the Jets' defense because of these comments?

Which is more important, how many yards you yield or how many points?

@Brendan @Lloyd Jay Reife

A true professional will put out 100% no matter the opponent.  I'll tell you what, a team scoring on the Jets will have a dash more pleasure because of Rex's mouth.

Question for you.  If Rex was an opposing coach of a team you root for, how would you as a fan react to his words?

Brendan
Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm You agree with PFF's non-updated rankings based on not watching the team play as a full unit yet. Noted.

@Brendan @a57se

Well can you at least acknowledge that that is not the only way of interpreting what and why he says things?

bklyndude

@a57se @Brendan

Well if the QB's keep giving the ball to the other team at a higher than league average,  it's hard to argue for points.

@a57se When measuring the effectiveness of a defense? Yards.

Unless you think Poopfart Sanchez's pick-6 parade should count against a defense.

Brendan

@Lloyd Jay Reife I'd enjoy them as refreshing. I wouldn't take them personally, hate the team he coaches more, etc.

But I'm also not an old fogey who hates talking and all that.

@bklyndude @a57se @Brendan

It doesn't help but even taking that into consideration the defense has declined the last two seasons.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

even if you factor that in (which I have done before on this Blog) the defense has gone downhill since Rex started here. That doesn't mean I don't think rex is a terrific coach, because I do think he is, it just indicates the defense is not as good as he puts forth in the media.

@jetlanding It might've been this morning, but in one of yesterday's threads Joey posted the link of Costello using these rankings without context, but Bent lent context to them to make it a fuller discussion. I'll see if I can find them.

@Brendan @a57se

I see it as Rex attempting to take the focus off his players and that attempt is now pretty transparent as he has used that tactic extensively since he has been here.

All it accomplishes these days is to stir up the Circus allusions we all hate as Jets fans.

I really don't think the guys who have played for him any amount of time really listen to this crap anymore.

I may be wrong...just my opinion.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se As I said, if he predicts "top 5" for his defense, he's right more often than not.

You can pretend we didn't just watch the team completely re-work the defense the past two years (the two "down" years where he had the 8th and 11th ranked defenses), but they were a mix of very young and very old and sometimes very injured.

Let's see how he does now that he's rebuilt his defense.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se "I see it as Rex attempting to take the focus off his players and that attempt is now pretty transparent as he has used that tactic extensively since he has been here."

And yet, it continues to work. Right now, we're talking about Rex, not his team. Magic.

"All it accomplishes these days is to stir up the Circus allusions we all hate as Jets fans."

No, it accomplishes far more than just that.

"I really don't think the guys who have played for him any amount of time really listen to this crap anymore."

Really? Because they say they do.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Not to me...he has only been top 5 in points allowed ONCE.

I don't care how many yards a team gives up.

@a57se Oh, please explain this brilliant comment, 57.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se That's great, go ask the NFL how they rank defenses (spoiler alert: it's not points).

Brendan
Brendan

@Lloyd Jay Reife I was pointing out that I've seen you make similar criticisms of Rex before, so it's clearly not something you're on board with (the "talking" comment).

The Jets are wrong all the time. Can you prove Rex is wrong about this prediction, though? I know I certainly can't.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

 But I'm also not an old fogey who hates talking and all that.

That comes across as gender bias to me...

Brendan
Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm "Isnt Rex saying the defense will top 5 putting very high expectations on the defense?"

Yes. My follow up question: are these expectations any lower than the expectations the defensive players are currently holding for themselves?

"How is that just putting the focus on just him, the D are the ones on the field, no?"

The "putting the focus on him" thing applies to now, in the preparation. Players are different, but this is strictly in terms of fan and media attention. The story will be "come check out this dumb thing Rex said!" if you hate him, so the focus sticks on him while the team can prepare and try to back up what their coach said.

"Rex said he learned in the past about not putting a target on his teams back"

He did, but he learned it in terms of saying his player, team, unit, whatever is the best

"I never hear the top HCs like BB saying these things, just saying."

And the biggest trash talking team in the NFL won the SB last year. I don't see the point in comparing Rex to other coaches.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

According to Football Outsiders metrics based analysis (which I am not a big fan of but I am trying to add perspective) the Jets have had 3 top 5 defenses under Rex but not the past two seasons.

they have the Jets 12th last season and 9th in 2012...

Lloyd Jay Reife

@Brendan @Lloyd Jay Reife

Brendan, please cite where I was anti-Rex?  I was rooting for Woody to keep Rex on, when in week 17  Rex was on his last leg as the coach since the general public didn't know Woody  told Rex he is coach for 2014 prior to kickoff vs. Miami

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Um...what. I'm saying old people who talk about things like "the way things used to be" and sht like that. "Fogey" does not indicate gender.

Lloyd Jay Reife
Lloyd Jay Reife

@Brendan @a57se

If I'm an "old fogey" thank you.  I'm proud to have remained as a Jet fan and suffered dozens and dozens of losses than having switched to the Giants  and celebrated 4 Super Bowls.

Brendan
Brendan

@Lloyd Jay Reife I'd rather be an old fogey than an irrelevant whippersnapper, which is what Hank's called me.

My dad's been around with this team since its inception, so I have the utmost respect for Jet fan lifers who have been around for decades. I've been rooting for this team for 2 decades, so I know that it takes a special internal strength to deal with this stuff on a regular basis for that long, let alone twice as long (or longer). I hope you don't confuse my disagreeing for disrespect, because it's never intended.
