READ: The Rangers Won’t Find A Taker For Wade Redden

In the Daily News, Jesse Spector writes that even with the trend of teams taking on long-term contracts of high salaried players, the Rangers won’t find someone to take the final three years of Wade Redden’s contract.

I said a similar thing in a mailbag recently.

There is a difference between Wade Redden and Brian Campbell. Campbell can play over 22 minutes a night and run your powerplay, while Redden is a third pair defenseman who spent a year in Hartford because of his salary. Redden may have been a good influence on young players in Hartford, but he still won’t bring any sort of value to his contract in the NHL. The Blackhawks were lucky that the GM who signed Campbell to his contract is now somewhere else and was in need of adding salary.

Frans Neilsen has a broken hand, for that I'm sorry, but so many of us Isles fans have broken hearts, that get broken every season with the hooples running this team.

Time to start looking at the 2014 draft.

We should also have a look-see at our picks for the past 5 yrs. Bring them up, get them some experience, what better time? Can our clueless coaching staff please let our supposed studs play on one of the first 2 lines, instead of burying them on the 4th? Way to develop....sheesh!......I don't recall Bossy, Trottier, Turgeon, or even Ziggy Palfy starting on the 4th line!

I believe islanders were 9-4-2 with strome in the lineup....

Had trouble putting up points( with 3rd and 4th liners)

But had many strong shifts.

I believe sending griff back was the right move

But the case of strome- any chance of making the playoffs were lost for a few extra ahl games

Isles should still try to move him.Maybe in a deal w/ Vanek to maximize his value. What I mean by this is 2 nhlers for 2 nhlers period.No maybes or could've beens.Time for Garth to address areas of need.Heck if there has to be a throw in make it count for salary dump. I for one see this point in time as the most pivotal in Isles (or at least Garths) history. As the Poison song goes"Give me something to believe in".I will say do not just give Frans away & this is coming from a fan who doesn't think he's a core guy but he is serviceable. Time for Garth to put up or shut up........Oh wait he never says anything anyway. Never mind.If it were my decision he'd be gone before any moves are made.Just a bit of FYI on the NHL network the Moulson/Vanek deal went down as the worse trade of the year.Not so much based on player for player but when u add the picks its brutal.

So how much more are we going to be seeing of Poulin and /or Nillson or is the verdict already in on them and we'll watch Nabokov finish his career?

See if it was the other way around. I have seen a lot of missed calls this year against the Islanders. I don't know if it is because I watched primarily Islanders games as opposed to a season of another team. But I can bet you that if the injury to Nielsen was to Crosby Johnson would've received at least five games. The rules should be equal to each player

Danny Lofaro
Danny Lofaro

Two games? I think the degree of injury suffered by the player should determine the amount of games suspended. So the Islanders will be missing an important player for an extra week after the Olympics (thank God for the break) and Johnson gets TWO games that's ridiculous sounds like Colorado came out the winner in this

that was a weird play, i don't know what the guy was thinking.  and it was pretty clear he had done some damage.  hopefully ok within the expected time frame.

David Rosenthal

At least they suspended someone for hurting an Islander, had it been an Islander delivering an intent to injure double handed chop, it would have been at least 5 games though

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

wow someone suspended for a cheap hit on a islander im amazed... hopefully we see lee up for  a little while. then maybe strome shortly after that when vanek is traded

@doc942 I agree Doc,bring up Halmo too see what kind of talent he has ,doing pretty well down there.

The next outrage for Isles fans - I bet he will just get a fine.  IMO, any 2-handed slash that starts above your shoulders should be an automatic match penalty and suspension.

Even when where not playing we get bds news wtf

The season is officially broken.  Strome and Lee should be call-ups once the season re-starts along with and following one or two trades.

doc942

@erika  They were hall of famers.  The "clueless" coaching staff didn't start Tavares on the 4th line.  If you want to compare Strome, Nino and Nelson to Bossy, Trottier and Turgeon… go ahead… but you're way off base.

@rmreturns

Unless JT gets so disgusted with the direction of this team, he looks to 'break' contract, and bolts the Isles and who would blame him, if he perceives no improvement in the personnel, and talent level wouldn't you as a fan agree with that decision, should he decide to leave, I would.

@monalot73 My opinion is they'll ride Nabby but I think they should ride Nilsson.He is the better of the 2 @ the nhl level.Or should I say he has the build to be more successful at this level.

jepliberty

@David Rosenthal

And imagine if it was JT, would he still only get 2 games? Does the players talent level warrant more suspension time? I say no, especially if they are Islander players. There is precedent there, with this team.

Don22
Don22

@truth77 @doc942 I know he has been doing ok down there, but isn't he more of a Michael Haley type, but with better skills?  I don't know much about him but I remember reading when he was acquired that he was a gritty player who spends a lot of time in the box.

since72

@Don22  You're right Don.  It was a vicious slash.  Getting only 2 games in the end will not discourage such actions.  When a star player gets hurt in the playoffs, what do they do then?

Don22
Don22

@doc942  I agree.  But how do you get them in the lineup?  I guess once they trade Vanek you can move Donovan up to 1st line and put Strome centering 3rd line?  Although I might consider Strome for wing on 1st line to try and get him going.  Lee - 4th line?  Odd man out is McDonald which is fine with me.  I would prefer to keep Boulton on the roster if possible.  He serves his purpose at times and can be a multi-game scratch without issues.

erika
erika

@doc942 @erikaThey were hall of famers when their career was over....not before it even started in the NHL. Also, I am not comparing the players except that back then, they were our prized picks, and now Strome, Reinhart, and Pullock are. So please don't put your own spin on my words. My point was that when you have a prized rookie, and a lost season, let him play with a few of your most talented players. If he does well, his confidence will skyrocket...all the better for us.

Don22
Don22

@doc942 @erikaI get your points and I don't disagree.  But are we making too much about starting anywhere except the 1st line?  It's not like we really have a clear 2nd, 3rd line nor do most of the players on those lines really make a difference.  In terms of minutes, yes - they need the minutes.  But does playing with Grabner and Bailey make a difference over playing with Clutter and Nelson? To be honest, I think if we have a choice of the 2, he's better off with Clutter and Nelson.

With that said, once Vanek is gone I think Strome should be the 1st line unless they really want him to be a center.  Then let him center 2nd line with Nelson and maybe Grabs.  I don't think Lee is more than a 4th liner at this time.

Don22
Don22

@since72 @Don22Well if it's Cindy, then whoever did it would be arrested on the spot.

doc942
doc942

@Don22  Well, I'm assuming Frans is out… so Strome steps in and if Vanek is traded shortly after the break… that opens a spot for Lee maybe?  Move Nelson to 1st line.

Ryan Sweeney
Ryan Sweeney

@Don22  assume you meant nelson, not donovan?

isles have to find a way to get these kids playing time...could make a huge difference in their development come training camp next season.

erika

@Don22 @doc942@erikaI am not sure if it will make a difference, Don, but why not give it a shot? It just may.....

Don22

@jepliberty @rmreturnsI truly don't think that's part of his DNA.  I am confident that he will put forth his best effort throughout his contract.  If he is disgusted by how things are going then maybe he waves goodbye as a FA, but I really don't think he is the type of guy to jake it.

jepliberty

@rmreturns

By break, I mean anyway, or avenue open to JT, and why I put it in parentheses, [sp] he may choose not to put out full effort if no major change to the talent on this team, signaling a 'don't give a crap" attitude by Wang, and his water boy Snow, people say he is not built that way, and perhaps they are correct, but no one knows what goes through his mind, except maybe his family [Dad] and some of his terse answers after the bell rings seems like he ain't too happy with this club, and yes he is being a good soldier, but then again, time may be getting shorter with him, and we may see...

@rmreturns

Nothing more than idle chatter from the company man RM...

But of course a player can break a contract - players are contractually obligated and paid to um, uh, play. And should a player choose instead not to play, that player has indeed broken the terms of the contract...

Would Tavares choose to sit out and demand a trade? Nah, Tavares is no Alexi Yashin - then again, Chuck Wang certainly doesn't pay him like he paid his comrade Alexi...

And next time you feel the need to display your profound ignorance in a public forum, RM, at least do so accompanied by your signature harrumphing and preening, and CORSI stats...

Far more entertaining watching you jump through rhetorical hoop after hoop pleasing your master.

And if niño with zero leverage asks out and gets his wish it kind of sets the precedent ....

Don22
Don22

@orange2327 Not out of the realm of possibility of course.  But I think you really are waiting for the sky to fall on that.  You've written that before and I see what you are saying.  But I really think the fans see the problems with this team as ineptitude more than the players do.  Of course he wants to play with talent, but I don't think he is analyzing things as much as fans do.  And I truly don't think that's in his DNA to bail on the team before the end of his contract.  However, once his contract is up, if the team hasn't changed direction I can see him testing the FA market.

Don22
Don22

@Jeff Roland If he has skill and can play, then that's fine. As I said - I don't know much about him. But if he is a guy like Haley who's only mission is to go out and start fights, then I don't care to see him.  I'm not saying I'm against toughness or even fights. I just like guys that can fight to also contribute elsewhere.  Even Boulton is able to hold his own out there with limited minutes.

Don22
Don22

@doc942 @Don22 Right - just get these guys in.  And I hope we don't hear anyone complaining about who is on what line.  Other than the 1st line, there really isn't any difference - especially with Frans out.  Just get these guys some time up to learn more about the NHL game.

Don22

@Ryan Sweeney @Don22Yes I did mean Nelson.
My bad.
